You get a good result out of the plywood, but I think if you are going the extra mile to use veneer it will be even nicer. The problem with plywood is the direction of wood grain transverse to the longitudinal axis, but on a air screw all layers should be in same direction. This will look even nicer!

Good point, Frank. I was not aware of those wood grain directions. I was satisfied with the different colours.
But the question is, where to find the single veneers of less than 0.3mm thickness. I am afraid that if I sanded this 3-ply composite to a single layer thickness it would just fall apart. It was already tricky to remove one layer...
