Just saw this on FB. They look nice and should work well on Roden kits in Particular.

So is this just a trompe l'oeil 3D effect in 2D or is the piece you apply to the model actually three-dimensional?

They have the appropriate 3D items printed on decal paper. ( Sort of like Archer) but perhaps a step up in new tech.

They use a color 3D printer, but do not print an a base plate, but on a decal sheet. So you get a real structure, raised buttons and switches ...
This printer made in Japan is in the 30000$ region.
You can see here some cockpit parts printed:

Those printer can handle many colors and even different clear coats.

The newest printer is more powerful, but price is much higher:

An impressive printed example, this is out of the printer!

One day the next "WingnutWing" company will sell colorful printed biplanes on day, but until then we will have fun building those models ourself.

Frank

Frank, no insult intended but you are ageing. You are ageing quite well, but nevertheless you are ageing obviously….

Does anyone know if the ribtapes have a clear outline? I'm asking because if not they can be airbrushed a different colour on the sheet before applying.
Cheers.

Hi Andrew,
I'm currently building the 'Roden' Albatros D.I.
The fuselage is already closed up so the internal detail is done.
However I decided to try the Quinta decal set for the external detail on the fuselage and wings.
To that end I've sanded off the pre-moulded detail in preparation.
I'll detail their use in my build thread in 'Under Construction'.

This is what I've found online:

The Quinta sets are printed on a type of thin vinyl, but printed on decal paper.
They are released using water as for normal decals.
They are then allowed to dry before being glued to the surface.
Quinta suggest using a vinyl adhesive, such as that from Microscale, although PVA adhesive has been used.
The vinyl's are positioned and pressed down to flatten them and remove excess adhesive and air bubbles.
They seem to be much stronger than actual decals so can easily be repositioned during application.

Hi Mike

I would be interested in the adhesive properties of vinyl tapes. Looks like your'e going to be our Guinea pig for these sets off details. The online photos look good.

Cheers

Hi all,
I've yet to receive the Quinta Studio set for my Albatros D.I build.
However I can see a possible area of concern regarding the model colour versus the colours of the 3D printed Quinta parts.

As an example:
You have a fuselage area that has pre-moulded access panels that you intend to replace with Quinta parts.
Your research shows that the panels should be painted the same colour as the surrounding fuselage surface.
However, the Quinta panels are of a different colour or shade to the required colour.
Do you:
1. Paint the fuselage and apply the Quinta parts regardless of the colour mis-match.
2. Adjust the fuselage colour to match the Quinta parts, even though this may not be the correct colour.
3. Attempt to airbrush the Quinta panels (if indeed that is possible) to match the correct fuselage colour.

I suspect, due to the fine printed colours on the Quinta parts, re-painting them (if possible at all) would not be desirable as this would cover the finer colour printed details.

Just a thought,

Mike

The parts are decals, but Quinta recommends to add additional PVA glue.

Hi Frank,
Quinta state they are a 'polymerized vinyl', but printed on decal paper.
Here's a good review, which includes their package note,

Those look really nice!

I'm not too sure if I get any I'd use the wood sides, since, as Mike already indicated, you'd need to match the rest to these.
A separate set of Albatros louvres and hatches would be neat too, for example to replace the not very defined ones on the lower fuselage on the WNW Albatros.

The rib tapes look nice, too. I look forward to your assesment, Mike!
