Roden 1/35 Holt Tractor diorama finished
« on: March 26, 2021, 12:49:51 AM »
After seeing Chris Johnson's wonderful Holt tractor build from last year, I had to take the plunge and build one myself. Although an 8inch Howitzer Mk.VI came with the kit I purchased, I wanted to do something based in the Somme 1916, so I purchased a ResiCast Mk.II 8inch gun. This type was more appropriate for the time period, and has the wider wheels.

I was well warned about the Roden kit, and the cleanup of the parts is quite daunting. But I'm enjoying the process. I cobbled together some of the sub-assemblies so far for a show'n'tell.

Cheers,
Gary

A few of the sub-assemblies pieced together to show how all is slowly taking shape

The project will incorperate the Mk.II howitzer - more appropriate for the Somme 1916

Looks very interesting!

It’ll be fun painting that beast Gary.

Thanks everyone! You folks are very kind  :)

Following Chris Johnson's build - I purchased some thin pewter sheet and made a new roof for the model. The sink marks in the kit part were abominable, and difficult if not impossible to remove. I made a tool from an old paintbrush and embossed the pewter into the grooves of the roof, sliding the segment over to emboss the middle section (to avoid the gaping sink holes!).

I'm also making some boxes for the fenders...a feature seen in the period photos.
Cheers,
Gary

Edo, Rick and Steve - thanks for dropping in and making a comment!

I've made a few tarps for the roof using Aves FIXIT putty, and cobbled together most of my progress for a couple of photos before I start painting the sub-assemblies. Project on hold now whist I await some figures in the mail.

Cheers,
Gary

Gary:

So........is this the reason the Hannover is stalled???  That (Holt Tractor) is a neat model, even though it's a bit rough, it turns out nice and I know that you, like Chris, will turn out a "barn burner" of a model.  I have thought about getting one of these, but right now I have four vehicles in the queue and not ready to tackle this guy.  I like the idea of using material and making a new roof, yours looks the part as do the tarps.
Looking forward to updates and the figures and how you are going to display this.
Mark

Thanks for the comments gentlemen!

Thanks Mark - I've actually "stalled" this one now waiting on some figures from Model Cellar, nicely sculpted by Mike Good. The Hannover is well under way as I've changed tactics once again and abandoned the "frisket" idea for just plain old masking tape and lots of patience :-)

Cheers,
Gary
