Title: Roden 1/35 Holt Tractor diorama finished
Post by: gedmundson on March 26, 2021, 12:49:51 AM
After seeing Chris Johnson's wonderful Holt tractor build from last year, I had to take the plunge and build one myself. Although an 8inch Howitzer Mk.VI came with the kit I purchased, I wanted to do something based in the Somme 1916, so I purchased a ResiCast Mk.II 8inch gun. This type was more appropriate for the time period, and has the wider wheels.

I was well warned about the Roden kit, and the cleanup of the parts is quite daunting. But I'm enjoying the process. I cobbled together some of the sub-assemblies so far for a show'n'tell.

Cheers,
Gary

The project will incorperate the Mk.II howitzer - more appropriate for the Somme 1916

Thanks everyone! You folks are very kind  :)

Following Chris Johnson's build - I purchased some thin pewter sheet and made a new roof for the model. The sink marks in the kit part were abominable, and difficult if not impossible to remove. I made a tool from an old paintbrush and embossed the pewter into the grooves of the roof, sliding the segment over to emboss the middle section (to avoid the gaping sink holes!).

I'm also making some boxes for the fenders...a feature seen in the period photos.

Gary

Edo, Rick and Steve - thanks for dropping in and making a comment!

I've made a few tarps for the roof using Aves FIXIT putty, and cobbled together most of my progress for a couple of photos before I start painting the sub-assemblies. Project on hold now whist I await some figures in the mail.

Gary:

So........is this the reason the Hannover is stalled???  That (Holt Tractor) is a neat model, even though it's a bit rough, it turns out nice and I know that you, like Chris, will turn out a "barn burner" of a model.  I have thought about getting one of these, but right now I have four vehicles in the queue and not ready to tackle this guy.  I like the idea of using material and making a new roof, yours looks the part as do the tarps.
Looking forward to updates and the figures and how you are going to display this.

Thanks Mark - I've actually "stalled" this one now waiting on some figures from Model Cellar, nicely sculpted by Mike Good. The Hannover is well under way as I've changed tactics once again and abandoned the "frisket" idea for just plain old masking tape and lots of patience :-)

Thanks for the comments folks!

Paul from Model Cellar has just sent me some of their newest figures for my project. They are a Holt Tractor driver, and a couple of artillery crew that come with various headwear to depict servicemen from the British Commonwealth. The figures are beautifully sculpted by Mike Good, and I'm looking forward to adding them to my eventual vignette.

As I get working on these figures I'll be posting some in-progress work on the construction and painting steps.

Cheers (and thanks to Paul!!),

Great work!! Is the Avis Fixit any better than Milliput?

Steve

Thanks Steve. For making tarps, I find the FIXIT works better than Milliput because it's not as "sticky". I roll the putty out on a pane of glass using talcum powder until I can get a workable thickness. I do use Milliput for gap-filling and other tasks, so each product has it's own purpose to me. I'm still trying to source some Magic Sculpt in a reasonable amount (200gm) without having to order it during our cold weather (which in Edmonton lasts from September until June). I've heard very good things about that putty.
Cheers,
Gary

Frank, Andreas and Alexis - thanks so much for dropping by to comment! Unfortunately, Alexis, much of the scene has to be mapped out before I can start to paint the figures. I still have to configure the driver for the Holt tractor...and may have to perform surgery to have his head looking the best way to convey the feeling of how these components will all piece together. I'm also waiting for some missing parts from my Howitzer kit to be sent from Resicast in France (Gun Limber Wheels).

A couple of the components of this scene involve two troops passing by on bicycles. I've converted one of the MasterBox WW2 bikes to look more like a WW1 example used by the British army. In some cases, there were provisions for carrying a Lee Enfield rifle using leather straps.

These little models come with an etched metal set that replicates the spokes and smaller components quite nicely. I had to add some 0.3mm tubing here and there to make up for some of the etched brass bits that didn't fit very well, and repair a broken support (seen below in the parts layout in the top left corner). To glue the handlebars to the post, I had to drill a tiny hole and use a fine copper wire to help give strength to the miniscule joint. It can be seen still poking out of the top in the photo. Some thicker copper wire was used for the springs at the back of the seat.

Gary

If there's one thing I find takes forever in time and resources, it's converting figurenes to match what I need in a scene. Work is progressing slowly on the project as I try to put everything together, with the figures relating to each other in some natural appearance.

I used some ICM British Infantry parts to convert the WW2 French bicycle troop to the soldier I wanted chatting with the Holt driver, and then altered the position of the driver and his head to correspond. A second cyclist with a bike is in progress. And I'm still waiting for my missing parts from ResiCast.

Don't want to be repetitious but just had to comment again.  The figures works so well with the bike.  It looks like you really had to go to the spare parts bin to piece him together.  Also the gun cover and the roll-up on the rack!  Very cool.

Thanks Todd - I'm lucky to have collected a lot of bits over the years, and was able to use an UltraCast head, Dragon models German WW2 infantry arms, and an extra Model Cellar helmet on this guy. The bike kit broke in EXACTLY the same spot as the previous one when I tried to remove that part from the sprue - very delicate indeed  :o

With painting the gun and tractor well under way, I received my missing limber wheels from ResiCast in France. But I was sent the wrong ones. So I'm still waiting to hear about how that'll be resolved.

Meanwhile I thought I'd make a start painting the figures. This time with their heads attached. I like to airbrush the uniforms black, and then add colour gradually building from dark to light so that the highlights stand out. The basic shades of the uniforms were also airbrushed, and I fill in the rest with brushing very dilute layers of Vallejo colours. Everything is still a work in progress, so here are a few pics of the Holt driver and Artillery troops so far.

Hi Gary, I think your figures  look  wonderful!

Could you share with us how you do this?

For example: how do you make such sharp  seperations between the pants and the shirt, znd how you do the details of the face, and what paints and colours you use?

Willem - thanks for asking that question. Hopefully I can shed some light on ho I manage the painting steps.

As previously shown, I have airbrushed the figure's uniforms in XF-1 Tamiya Flat black. I then airbrushed on a colour for the trousers - Vallejo mix of "British Uniform 70.921" and "Khaki" 70.988 in a 3:2 ratio. The colour was sprayed to allow the black to show as a pre-shade.

Setting the airbrush as fine as I could, I then sprayed the grey colour (I used a neutral Tamiya Grey - doesn't matter which) for the undershirt, again letting the black show through as shadow, and also cutting as close to the trousers as I could.

These colours were then painted onto the figures using very diluted amounts of Vallejo Model Color acrylic. You have to thin it quite a bit, and use several coats. This takes some experience with the paint, and some practice to see how it lays down. The idea is to build up the colour to a lighter shade as you hit the highlights of the folds in the clothing.

For the faces, arms, and hands I paint the flesh colour by brush, and use Vallejo Beige Red 70.804 as a base. The shades are done mostly with a blend of 70.804 and Vallejo Panzer Aces 343 "Shadows Flesh", and highlights with the base colour and Off-White 70.820.

I have to say that I absolutely need the best paint brush to accomplish this level of detail, and I swear by the Winsor & Newton Series 7 sable brushes size 000. They are very hard to buy here in Edmonton, Canada. I also use a microscope to help with magnification.

Sorry for the long answer - but I hope this helps answer you question :)
Cheers,
Gary

Thanks Alexis and Edo - I'm happy to share the story, although I'm not a fan of showing partially completed work  ::). But that's what these threads are for I guess  ;)

Speaking of which - I've had to paint and weather the tractor in sub-assemblies. It's hard to properly weather the running gear with the tracks in place, and the engine of course had to be done separately. So here's where I'm at now with the finishing stages before the platform goes over the chassis, and some of the other smaller assemblies are added.

Cheers,
Gary

Another update, as I try and work my way through painting/weathering/assembling the tractor. There are a couple of levers mounted just in front of the steering wheel, and photos show a couple of lines (pneumatic? cables?) going from there and passing through the fender. I added these with thin lead wire. They look flimsy enough, so I didn't make them straight.

Each build I've studied of this model seems to show the radiator tilted forward at the top, which looks odd. I believe the reason is the upper hose is a bit too long, so I've test-fitted mine many times to get the pipes and hoses to line up correctly with the radiator sitting plumb. I don't think I've ever test-fitted a model as much as this one.

One often wonders what colour to paint engine exhaust parts. Studying real ones - they appear to be very abstract in appearance varying from spotty pinks to greys to rusty looking and everything in between. I painted the Holt's exhaust by airbrushing it flat black, and then rubbing on random colours of artist's chalk pastels here and there until I was pleased.

Thanks so much to all who have commented! I'm truly grateful.

I finally received some new Winsor & Newton paint brushes from Delta Art. I had to cancel a couple of brushes on order since last October and substituted whatever they had in stock. No amount of hounding seems to speed things up - and of course "Covid" is the big excuse. That and some ridiculous trade agreement because animal hair is used to make them. But I love those brushes, and my figures are progressing too.

I've been busy on the model and have spent most of my modelling time applying pastels and oil paint touches of weathering using mineral spirits as a solvent (doesn't attack the Tamiya acrylic base paint). More to add as I go. I find I can never weather things enough.

Gary

Thanks to all for following along this project - I put the finishing touches onto everything after receiving my missing limber wheels from ResiCast. Here are a few pictures. I wanted to pose everything in a scene indicative of deployment or preparation for transport.
Cheers,
Gary

I must say I'm not terribly interested in ground pounders and don't usually comment but this vignette is truly outstanding and I have to congratulate you on such a terrific creation. Hats off!

Thanks for that, Paul. I have to extend my gratitude to you for sending those figures. They are truly exquisite. And they led to having the diorama turn out the way it did.

Stellar work! Very inspiring as it makes me want to build something heavy and paint a few figures right away... and I usually don't do either.

Lovely work all round - I love the subdued tones you achieve - your work has a very distinctive style. Can’t wait to see what’s next… the type B? Cheers Matt

I'm glad you find it pleasing Dave. I tried to lay it out so that the components added a bit of interest ...instead of having just a Tractor towing the gun & limber in a straight line. My next project will be the MiniArt Military Type B Omnibus (already in the works!).

It will be a pleasure to get together and show you this one, Lance. Marianne and I would look forward to that  :) It's nice to know that the time I spent trying to compose the scene is appreciated by modellers as discerning as yourself.

Gary

That's very kind of you to say, Matt. I sometimes try to break out of my "norms" to create something that looks different...but can't shake the overall appearance of each of my projects. Next time, I'm going for more extreme weathering  8)

Thanks Frank - I especially like painting figures! I believe they add so much to a model display, whether it's an aircraft or vehicle.

Wow, Gary! This is awesome. There are so many points to mention in this diorama.... The paint job is brilliant, you have achieved so many different tones of green every detail is highlighted. There are lots of different angles in your layout.
The figures interact with each other and there are many different possibilities what is happening. I look on it and my imagination starts telling me a story. Not to mention the genius way of doing the figures or the bikes. I must say that I think this is the best diorama of this year.
Chapeau, Manni

Oh wow, you nailed it again Gary! This is a true work of art. The figures really come to life. It could just as easy be a still from the actual front! I agree with Manni, your paintwork is superb with al those nuances of green. It all comes together: the poses of the splendidly painted figures, the position  of the tractor and the gun. I can see this diorama also end up in Model Military just like your Mk. VI tank.

I absolutely love your dioramas, the Big Bertha being my favourite. You are the Diorama Master!

Thanks for your compliments Manni, it's nice to see that my hours of planning and work have produced something that you find appealing. I seem to be inspired by the feel of some of the photos from WW1, and the one I posted earlier transformed into the result.
Cheers,
Gary

Willem - you flatter me and I'm happy you enjoyed my projects so far. I'm currently writing this one up for a future article in Model Military International and it will be in two parts (first the Tractor, then the rest of it including the diorama).

Dear Ladies and Gents,
Of course I do like ground equipment and WW I tractors are an impressing object.
Sometimes I really like to built a fantasy project " in the style of ".
At the moment I'm merging the Caterpillar Sixty ( Thunder Models ) with Trumpeter's Soviet B-4 WW2 howitzer.
The Cat was issued in 1919 so it's looks still are perfect for the year 1918.
The howitzers carriage back part is added to the Cat , the big wheels used as passive steering device ( see to Mark I tank ).
The B-4 gun itself one day will become a WW IRussian coastal gun.
I'll try to make the wheel arrangement workable since Trumpeter's device was a) not quite correct and b) not movable.
The carriage part will have a lowerable plate to stabilize it in case of uncouplig the limber wheels.
The artillery tractor will be an AEF 1918 tractor for heavy artillery.

beste Grüße, Gunther
