Thanks Guy's...

A little beside the issue at hand, I stubled across this guy on Danish television making his own wooden boat and waterproofing
it with wooden tar 'cooked' from pine trees. Producing tar from wood seams to have been used here in Scandinavia since the Iron Age.





So I think a little brownish tint to the floats would be appropriate...

Although I disagree on the looks of the C.IV (though I like that "late" with the rounded nose more) this is some serious modelling going on!

I have been very reluctant to spend expensive Aviattic Naval hex on the floats.



I was afraid that it wouldn't be possible to get the decals to fit down into the groves of the top of the floats.
And if I  on top of that would end up darkening the floats with tamiya smoke...

So a far out idea emerged in my mind...

Would it be possible to mask the German Naval Hex pattern and paint it on the float surface.
I didn't really think it all through and in the beginning I thought I would need several masks...



It turned out to be much more simpel than that, I only needed to cut one mask to paint the pattern!

1. paint layer, a grey'ish light rosa base color.



2. paint layer, a brownish color for the dark hexagons.



3. paint layer, a blue grey color.



After a little retouching the result is quite convincing.



And the masks cut from vinyl is even reusable for another project!

Thanks Rick, I haven't decided if I want to do the 'blackened' floats yet, lets see when we get to it...



The converted parts for the fuselage and cockpit, incl. the Mercedes D.III engine are coming along.

Your work is always a great show and inspiration. This build is not an exception!
Especially that I have the Early Rumpler in my stash to be built, preferably into something unusual! And I also have a soft spot for hydroplanes. 😉 Needless to say, I will be watching your progress with great intetest!

Oohh, that would be nice with another Rumpler, perhaps a 6B2 with the late nose?

Interesting but I will rather build an early one, the late in Polish markings already sits in my cabinet.

Too late I realized something was off...

I don't know how I missed it, I knew the LMG was on the opposite side of the Rumpler 6B, but I didn't put two and two together...
The fact that the engine was replaced by a Mercedes D.III would of course mean the oil tank was replaced too, to the right side!



Thats why the machine gun was on the other side! And thats why the opening in the instrument panel had to be mirrored to the left side.
Well if I had had any cockpit photo's of the 6B maybe I would have found out before and didn't have to redo the instrument panel a second time...



Well I managed to get it right, without too much trouble. Maybe some of the instrument were in another place too, but this will have to do for now.
