Sopwith 5F.1 Dolphin C3799 Capt. Irving

Today I finished my third model this year: a Sopwith 5F.1 Dolphin created from the fantastic Copper State Models 1/48 kit. This was a looong running project, started in 2018, but paused also due to our great Memorial Group Build. My Fokker was awarded with two sets of Pheon decals, so I changed my plan to the blue Dolphin C3799 of Capt. Irving.

This was the Premium edition of the kit, so it has a resin engine and metal exhausts. Beside the Pheon decals I used RAF wire terminals, turnbuckles, Vickers and Lewis MGs from Gaspatch. The seat belts are docne by HGW. Some wooden parts are scratched like airscrew, boxwood struts and tailskid. Also metal parts are added made from brass and nickel silver like fuel caps, a metal landing gear and more.

Paints are used from Alclad, Mr. Paint, Gunze and oils.

For more information about the build please visit the detailed build log:

And now I'm curious about your opinions - maybe Edgar will stop by?

Enough of the introductory words - now the pictures!

A negative stagger wing. If not ugly, at least strange.

Please not the thin outlets of the exhaust.

This project was a lot of fun!

Cheers,
Frank

Frank, We at Copper State Models would like to thank you for what you did with our Sopwith 5F.1 Dolphin, a superb work of a master modeller. This is by far the best Dolphin in 1/48scale, some even may say that it is for sure 1/32 scale as you went to another level with the detailing the model
Simply love it!)
THank you!!

Thank you Gary, Marc, Stephen, Bud, Fredrik, Guy, Edgar, B, Ed and Bob!
I am especially pleased that the manufacturer likes this model! But I also have to say thank you for this great kit! I have more from CSM in my stash :D

(You are quick! Third model already this year...)
That is deceptive! At first the Schneider takes a lot of time, the second one was Benz Motorwagen as fast out-of-the-box build and on this Dolphin a lot of work was already done 2018. Good to have it finished!

Cheers,
Frank

Looooove the Dolphin! This is spectacular and so nice that Edgar chimed in, kudos for an exemplary build. I’m about to start my WnW Pup and have it in mind to continue right through their Sopwith catalog to the Dolphin, it’s been calling to me. Thanks for sharing such an inspiring build;

Thank you Jimbo!

This morning I had the chance to do some outdoor pictures with light from my back on the balcony. I'm very limited on angles and picture section to not have modern structures on it but I like the colors.

Frank

Thank you Gaz and Lance!

Because of the orientation of the balcony you can only take such pictures in the morning, and either I was working or the weather was not suitable - that's why it took so long.
Lance, you wanted to start the WNW Dolphin this year, if I remember right. What about your plans? Which machine do you want to build?

Cheers,
Frank

Frank,
I plan to do one of the Canadian ones with the Maple Leaf Logo using Pheon's Volume 2 Sheet.  Number 1 Squadron RCAF was equipped with Dolphins and formed at Hounslow UK in 1918 however it's deployment to the Front was cancelled by the Armistice. It is on my "Bench List" for 2020! If it's half as nice as yours I'll be very pleased!
Cheers,
Lance
