Breguet R.U1 'Tin Whistle'
« on: October 26, 2019, 09:04:20 AM »
I'm trying to pick this one apart, and looking for some information at the same time. Mostly for curiosity, it may lead to a model - who knows

There are a whole bunch of apparently similar aeroplanes laid out nicely on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Br%C3%A9guet_Type_IV

One of these types, and I'm not sure how many, was in service with the RFC before the Great War. This/these gained the nickname 'Tin Whistle', probably based on the similarity between the silver aeroplane and cheap musical toys.

I'm trying to understand if the RFC version had the Salmson Canton-Unné engine, and if it was an open three seater like the example in the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris:

(from Wikipedia)

Or if it was a two seater

Has anyone got further information, and possibly a drawing?

I've browsed 'Britain's First Warplanes' (J.M Bruce, 1987) and found the following aeroplanes

202 Breguet B3/L1 60hp Renault, then 85hp Salmson. Open cockpit

210 Breguet G3 100hp Gnome. Open cockpit

211 Breguet G3 100hp Gnome. Open cockpit

212 Breguet L2 70hp Renault then 85hp Salmson. Faired cockpit. This aeroplane also has a spinner and enclosed Salmson engine

213 Breguer L2 70ho Renault. Open cockpit

The closest to the aeroplane in Paris is probably number 202 when rebuilt
