Detailed index of content of Windsock Internationals?
« on: August 30, 2019, 01:31:57 AM »
Today I got a 8.6kg parcel with a lot of information: some (or a lot of) earlier "Windsock International" magazines for a fair price :D

Now I'm a bit lost in a "information overload" ;)

Does anybody know a detailed index of content?
A text file / table ordered after manufacturer and type with links to the volume including page would be nice.
To start this from scratch would be a lot of work :(
Could we do it together?

Cheers,
Frank

I‘d pay a Mass Beer at a Fürstenfeld Bruck Pub, if you do the job and share your index with us  ;D

Thank you Ken, but that was not the question ;)
The Datafiles are well known, I have a own table to keep track of my around 100 Datafiles (to avoid bying doubles) and also listed for example on scalemates.com "Books" section.

My question was for the "Windsock International", which is a magazin every two month since the late 80s (2016 was volume 32, one vol per year).
With different articles about aircrafts, models, details, sometimes with plans, many pictures (b/w and color of museum machines) ....
One example:
https://www.windsockdatafilespecials.co.uk/windsock-international-vol9no1-575-p.asp
So I guess there are around 15 to 20 aircraft types mentioned in each issue?

So if I want to build a specific type, e.g. a "Halberstadt Cl.II" I like to have a index to the single issues including pages, instead searching to all 150 issues. This have to be repeated for every project again :(

And I know my bad luck - if I build without checking before I found the info about a detail one day after I created it in the wrong way >:(

There is a table of content, but not very specific, more like: "More Morane-Saulnier's", but you don't know if this is about AI or P or ...
And not all that stuff is in the type specific Datafile, and I have kits of types with no Datafile, but drawings in the International.

So going to all issues and create a detailed table of content is a lot of work ...

Cheers,
Frank

Perhaps a bunch of us could do a cooperative effort and, for example, assign a year or so of issues to each and then share the work to produce a master index? I only have from Volume 25 #1 (Jan-Feb. 2009) to the last one Volume 32 #4 (Winter 2016) and a half dozen or so back issues that caught my eye over the past 10 years. I was really disappointed when they ceased publication, an excellent series!
I'll be the first to volunteer, suggest Frank compile a perspective list of "Researchers" for this and determine if it garners enough interest. Like Frank has mentioned, I always seem to find what I need in the files AFTER it's too late!
Frank, if your windfall produced doubles let me know, I'd be keen on expanding my collection.
Cheers,
Lance

That is a great idea, Lance!

As start I will pick a volume and will do a first attempt, to get a feeling of amount of info, format and so on.

I‘d pay a Mass Beer at a Fürstenfeld Bruck Pub, if you do the job and share your index with us  ;D
Andreas
Let's see, if Andreas will pay a beer also for all volunteers ;D

I have nearly 90 issues up to Volume 21 (2005). But sorry Lance, no doubles, but missing issues in some years.

Cheers,
Frank

Sorry, Frank, I did not understand what you were asking.  I would be glad to help if I had any of these magazines.
A cooperative effort would be the way to go about this.  I hope you can find enough volunteers for the job.

I'd be "all in" for that, Andreas, if you'd include the plane tickets! ;)

I'd be happy to do a volume or two. I seem to have most of vol 13 (1997) and all from vol 14 onwards.
How best to do this?

Suppose someone working on a volume gives you (Bughunter) a list of the types which feature in each issue, along with what kind of information it is?
Quick example, Vol 13 No 1, Jan/Feb 1997

Front cover: N&W Type Aa (Danish fighter) col pic
Inside front cover: Argus As.II & Benz engines, col pics
8-9: Sopwith Baby in Norway, pics
10-17: BAT FK22 Bantam, pics, history
22-25: FF49s in the Black Sea, pics
34-36 & inside back cover: Ansaldo A.1 in Polish service, pics, marking notes, b&w + col profiles

That's just the main features. There are also some one off pictures, and of course model kit reviews.
I'm guessing you'd like the reviews listed as well? And maybe a judgment call on whether a single pic shows enough detail to be worth listing?
And you'll figure out a format and end up with an alphabetical list according to type?

So, if you need input on any of the volumes I have, let us know how you'd like it to be done, and which volumes...

Cheers
Mark

Sorry, Frank, I did not understand what you were asking.
No problem Ken!
I must admit that all that different booklets under the label Windsock is a bit confusing. That's why I tried to explain it better in my answer.

Mark, a big thank you for your offer! It is also nice to know about your (and Lance) volumes.

How best to do this?
Yes, that is what I'm thinking about.

That's just the main features. There are also some one off pictures, and of course model kit reviews.

You mentioned good points!

A table calculation program (like Excel) would allow sorting? Since I'm a Linux user, I want to have it working on all platforms, but OpenOffice is compatible.

I expect the list will be long. I have the book "German Aircraft of the First World War" by Gray/Thetford and it lists over 500 aircraft types, and this are only german ones.

Again, thank you! But I will not have the answers tomorrow ;)

Cheers,
Frank

Just a quick thought re the index idea but has anyone asked Ray Rimell if he has such an index?

Ray edited and produced all of the Windsock Internationals so if anyone has a detailed index of contents, he would be the most likely person.

Ray is a member of our forum so perhaps a PM or email to him?

cheers

I mostly lurk here, but I have an index of all the Windsocks, as well as the complete Cross and Cockade, Over the Front, World War One Aero,  and Cross and Cockade Internationals.  It is in the form of an Excel spreadsheet, by subject, and generally simple enough to find what you're looking for.  I completed it myself, over the years, so there are no copyright issues.

If this is something any of you can use, send an email to me at [email protected], and I'll attach a copy in a reply email.

Parenthetically, let me congratulate all of you on the fine work and intelligent discussion I see here whenever I drop by for a peek.

Lance,
By coincidence I have just re-read your 3 part Modelling Master Class Chapter Two: Engines. I really enjoyed the entire series and picked up a lot of great tips. I'd be very pleased to get a copy of your Windsock Index, Email to follow shortly!

With the generous help of Lance Krieg the issue is solved!
The index created by him over the years was the infomation I was looking for.
Lance allowed to share it, so if someone need it he can contact me too.
