Postwar DH.9a ‘Ninak’

Hello all,

Finally got round to starting another lovely Wingnut’s kit. One I’ve been hoping to build for ages - the ‘Ninak’

This is a very impressive kit in the box! Crammed full of plastic, stickers, instructions, PE and general loveliness  the post war version has quite a lot of added detail from the early DH.9. Radiator/ Slats/ under slung wheel etc. It looks so draggy and heavy with all the extra equipment and the cats cradle of rigging (Bob, help).





I have however, got another kit in the post (should have been here last week) that I’m going to have to prioritise as it’s for the magazine - The new 1/24 Hellcat. But I couldn’t resist starting this one - I thought if I could at least get the oils done for the wood work, it could thoroughly dry whilst I’m building something else.

Here are the principal internal parts just cleaned up:





Im toying with these 3 colour options from the beautiful Pheon Decals offerings, but I would like to get masks made (anyone have anyone they’d recommend to get custom masks done?).

Hope I’m ok posting these here Rowan? I’ll remove them if not.

Great choice, Guy!  Of all the models I've built in all scales, the Ninak is my favorite and the most enjoyable.  You're gonna love it!  I favor the aluminum doped scheme, personally.

Ryan, yep I think the silver scheme is probably the best, won’t be up to your high standards though!

Yeah, a Hellcat thread would be nice!
And here the read one with the extra spoked wheel is nice too!

Be careful and not try to mix Hellcat with Ninak parts, this will not work because of different scale

Morning Ryan, I haven’t started yet- give me a chance!  it only arrived yesterday. Don’t know, probably Large Scale Planes? I’ll let you know.

Initial thoughts - large and impressive - but not quite Wingnuts quality


Here’s an update, maybe the last before the break! The first one is a light under coat of MRP Doped Linen and pre shaded prior to the oils. Looks a bit of a mess but won’t later (hopefully):






And here’s post oils - still at the early stage before any washes and detail painting. I haven’t gone too big on ‘grain’ as I don’t think you’d really see it in this scale anyway... just trying to achieve a simple, clean look at this point:

Btw,

What are your thoughts on using Tamiya clear orange/ yellow over oil finishes? I have used them before but I’d be interested in your opinions?

I think they add depth and warmth to the wood tones. Ps what paint did you use for the leather?  Cheers  Matt

Thanks, I might mix some in with the gloss coat - I want minimal coats if poss.

I use artists oils - basically 4 colours

Raw Sienna
Burnt Umber
White
Red

I just mix according to eye for different areas - the leather has a blob of red added.

Hey Guy,

When I was doing grain I used a 50/50 mix (clear yellow/ orange). As you remark it’s another layer of paint.
One plus is that it is glossy, so it will accept a wash. This is fine for an overall wood part but if there are other features on the piece that complicates things as you are faced to detail paint over the mix and then if using a wash you will need to shoot another clear adding another layer of paint.

And if you flat it all out you’ve used another layer of paint and killed the effect the mix gives you.
