There be Dragons... Hanriot HD.1

The Eduard 1/48th scale Hanriot HD.1 is my entry for the Group build - and a big Thank You to Dave for organizing this in memory of Des... It's just a wonderful way to commemorate his contribution to the hobby! I have scarcely opened the box and I see it is a relatively complete project as it stands.. If you look in the bottom left corner of the photo you can see the colour scheme I intend to do... I have a terrible record when it comes to completing group builds, but I'll really give this one my best efforts...



I'm glad that the Hanriot company gets a real mention in this Group Build!

I love the HD1, it's my favourite WW1 plane...
Which pilot owned the great schema you have chosen?

Looking forward to seeing your Hanriot growing I wish you luck with this GB!

Thank You for the replies, Antonio I think the pilot is unknown, but there may be some info I'm unaware of... Welcome Juan, Giuseppe, Andreas and Rick... I hope I can make some progress on this kit, I'm just so busy with the B&B and work that just gets more demanding every day! But herewith a start at least, and some PE to test my eyes and shaky hands... Plastic detail needs to be removed and The PE folded and glued in place neatly... Eek! The instrument panel I haven't glued - still need to paint and decal! The cowling already has an hour of cleaning up put into it, the two parts glued, but will need putty, surface primer and yet more fine sanding so it looks OK... The rudder I started on now, as I will spray the white, mask and then do the colours...




That PE seat is a fair challenge...

Hi Rick, Frank and Gregory, thanks for checking in! Frank, I think I'll battle along with the kit engine, it has some PE and is largely hidden... looks OK to me...

Well, off with the Dragons tail! The last station of the fuselage wasn't fabric covered, so the frame and the tail-skid is quite visible, see the box top. So out with the trusty razor saw and ... why do I do this to myself? But there is good info on the frames etc and I hope it comes together OK... I started on the basic colour for the wood tones... it feels good to splash some paint on...

Hi Monty, I made some research on my books and discovered that HD1 - 7501 belonged to 85a Squadriglia, situated in Tahyraqua, Albania since december 1916, then in January 1918 it was commanded by Capt. Mario Sarrocchi (to whom is said the Dragon mark belongs). The squadriglia was moved to Peshkep that month and received some 24 HD1 (formerly it was armed with Ni17).
Unfortunately I haven't found any image of the Dragon's marking so far.

Hi Antonio, Thank You for checking in and that wonderful info about Capt Sarrocchi - I find it really inspiring to know something about the history of these wonderful aircraft and their pilots! I know photographs of this aircraft are hard to find - I have tried! But I will go with Eduard's suggested colour scheme. The silver finish suggests it is an early French built machine - I'm happy with that, it's bright and cheerful! Rick, I'm still looking at photos of the exposed tail area, but it is becoming clearer to me how it really should look... This evening's brief modelling session saw a start to the engine and prop, but to my horror I discovered there was another slot in the engine cowling that needed drilling out... so with a trusty No. 11 scalpel blade I made these holes you can see in the photo... not pretty! I hope I can clean it up and make it look sort of OK...
