Scratch builds / Re: 1/72 Short S39 Triple Twin

Evening All,

Thanks Nigel for the kind comments - I am never sure of my sanity, even less so when I am building real aeroplanes, ie pushers!

I have been rigging recently using my preferred method with rolled copper wire and CA. It all works fine when the CA works quickly, but it can be a trial when it does not. Fortunately it seems to be working well at the moment. I have added the struts under the upper wing overhang and then rigged them, followed by the fore-aft and rear interplane struts. These are the least accessible and I usually rig these first on my models, following the principle that if the least accessible is rigged first, the task becomes progressively easier. It also means that damage is less likely:

I have also started to put in the supports and drive shafts for the forward propellors. These were made from 30 thou rod and painted black because that seems to have been the colour looking at photos, but I could be wrong. Note that the drive shafts were directly attached to existing struts because this was a modification to an earlier design:

Thanks for looking.

Stephen.

Sorry to post an out-of-sequence update, but the stipple camo question had me getting ahead of things. If this thread is going to be of any help, I'm hoping to add a few points to even help myself later when I attempt the late version. Another note of mention would be the small flash guard provided in the kit that has to be glued to the inside edge of the cowling and bent around the top of the intake manifold. This was a bit tricky, since the instruction sheet has fooled at least one modeller I had noticed installing it upside down.

I also have to show a view of the fuselage before it got buttoned up, and what I think are the proper location points for the forward cabane struts (since I missed this and caused no end of grief which I'm still muddling through).
Cheers,
Gary

This was a tricky bend to make (around a drill bit) since it had to line up perfectly with the intake manifold.

I had to add styrene to fill a 0.8mm gap where the cowlings meet at the top.

The arrow marks what I think is the location for the base of the forward cabane struts (but didn't discover this until all was buttoned up and I'd glued mine to the inside of the cowls). The WnW instruction illustrates this poorly. But I should have figured that out.

Under Construction / Re: 1:32nd scale Caudron G.3 (Anzani engine)

Hi Edgar,
Once again, thank you for your response.
That all makes sense now  :)
I'm sure we'll all look forward to more CSM releases in the future.
Especially I think float plane versions.

But I'm positive we will all be very pleased to see the Hansa Brandenburg D.I released first  ;)

Hi Mike,

We decided to divide the aircraft into several distinct versions, and here?s the current plan:

The first kit we released was a "standard" Caudron G.III. At that stage, we didn?t go too deep into specific variants ? we chose the configuration most commonly seen in historical photos. We also had drawings for the main upper wing with the narrow cutout, which became the basis for our 32006 boxing.

Later, we came up with the idea to produce an early version. That one would have required new tailplane ? specifically, a one-piece horizontal stabiliser with integrated elevator, and new vertical fins with early-style rudders. We would also have needed to remove the side fuselage openings for rudder pedal cables, since on early airframes the cables exited from the underside rear of the fuselage, along with the other control lines, meaning a new fuselage was needed.

However, we had some doubts about whether most modelers would actually recognize the early version as different from the standard boxing. So we postponed it and shifted focus to the late variant, which only needed a different top  wing. That allowed us to offer both the American version and the later French version.

The Anzani version then felt like a logical next step ? the upper wing tooling was already available, and all we needed was a new fuselage to accommodate the Anzani engine (which we also hope to use later for the Caudron G.4). It?s worth mentioning that the fuselage in the Hendon Museum (UK) has incorrect  geometry ? it seems shortened or cut off starting from the front cabane struts and to the engine, clearly should be longer.

As for the rudders: we didn?t plan to tool new LATE ones (that you mentioned), since the differences are very subtle and could be easily achieved by the modeler with some careful sanding, if desired.

That said, we?re still seriously considering an early version (possibly as an Italian boxing), and also a postwar G.III on floats (used in Finland), as well as a civil version with ailerons ? the one famous for crossing the Mont Blanc.

Ryan ST-A

I have a book on Ryans here someplace. I'm sure I read that the radial cowling was done for some other movie to disguise it as a race plane or something.
