Yes please! I may not comment all the time (still feeling a bit guilty about that in general) but I enjoy reading your build logs immensely.
I have to say that all those red-and-white squares look a lot better than my rather simple red/white bands on my 1/32 D.VII... After a few tries they're finally on a bit as I had them in mind (albeit ending up with a bit of a thickish coat of paint)
Look forward to more!
-
of course Frank, come along with it!
Andreas
-
I really like the build logs, I see them too for reference. So yes please...
Ray
-
Oh my...Frank...one of my favourite schemes....done by you. I know this will end up as a stunner! I would also choose the red squares. May be one day I will bulid mine, too. Found the dacals for a 1:32md kit.
Bye,

Wow Frank, great start to what I am sure will be a super build. :D

That is too cool!!

Great masking and paint work! You are off to another terrific Model!

Due to exhibitions and other things in the next weeks, the progress will be slower. Also spring is coming slowly, which increases my outdoor activities. So a little patience please ;)

Another interesting thread in 48, I'm in the first row!

Just found this Frank. I always enjoy the out-of-the-way aircraft or those with colourful schemes. This fits the bill nicely and you will give us another masterpiece i due course.

Frank,
I don't know how I missed this earlier, what a great scheme and already looking like a real winner. The prop is really a superb addition (as usual!) and you really got the wing masking done perfectly. I'll be following this project very closely, as Manni has said it promises to be a stunner!
Cheers,
Lance

Truly spectacular Frank, your workmanship never stops amazing me. Looking forward to your progress.

Thank you Lance, Juan, Rick, Giuseppe, Steve and Dundee :D for your comments!
And thank you for the information, that I used the wrong english word ::)
Radiator makes more sens, because the warm water heats up the air around.

Oh my Frank, what an update, I don't know what to comment on first!
The Ford Model T's are beautifully done and the details for the "Bif" just keep getting better. That seat is a real piece of art, great multi-media work and the pear wood struts are a really impressive addition. All these extra details with those you illustrated earlier are going to put this model in a class of her own!
Simply outstanding work!
Cheers,
Lance

Frank,
You are again exercising your pure magic on details, just incredible work and even more so in 1;48 Scale! I truly envy your soldering skills, I wouldn't be able to match this in 1:32 Scale. Great work and this promises to be a really outstanding model! 8) 8) 8)

Try to load this URL in your address line, this is the address of the last picture:

Some browsers seems not to load such pictures from Google into the page for some strange reason. If the picture loads then it is not a problem with access rights.
For me Firefox and Chrome are working, on the company machine also in MS Explorer.
Hope it helps,

Thanks Manni, if you love little details, you will love this update too!
RAF-Wires
Today I have some macros for my friends of micro mechanics!
This update handles the rigging with RAF wires. I will use the flat EZ-line, but I need some mounting. For the Brisfit I developed a new system, which combines ideas from my D.H.2 Stripdown and my Sopwith Pup.
At first I need 16 plates on the struts. A rest of a PE set drilled with 0,5mm, cutted, put on a drill shaft and soldered. For the risk of loosing some I added two more.
This pack was milled in form:
The size matches the parts of the CSM Dolphin, the wide finger is for the double wire.
The parts are separated. During the desolder I got some 4-parts pack, so I removed some fingers.
After that I added 0,5mm brass pipes. On the picture 52 drill holes are missing, done already. Unless I am very much mistaken the symmetric parts should match. Only the "flying wires" are double, the landing wires are singles.
To the strut the pipe is very short, just to keep a small distance.
The connectors made of 0,5mm brass pipe are in preparation, slotted and crimped. Some holes are missing. For the struts I need 52, 36 are done.
On the end I made a thickening of 0,7mm pipe, tinned and mounted with 0,2mm nickel silver. Only one prototype is done.
With a plugged strut it looks great. This mounts can be prepared and mounted with the struts. For the rigging I just need to plug in EZ-line and secure it with CA.
In 1:48 one can hardly find a more original solution?
With that preparation I hope to be able to finish the rigging task fast.
Now I just need to create some more pipes ...
Cheers,
Frank
Hi Frank
Can you please let me know what you used to put the slots in the tubing before crimping ?

Frank, you are no mere mortal.
I was born on this planet, but sometimes I wish to come from somewhere else to have more usable hands! Two are often really not enough ;)
Can you please let me know what you used to put the slots in the tubing before crimping ?
Andrew, I use a etched saw from http://www.radubstore.com
I don't know, which one I bought. The blad is 0,08mm thin:

Does someone noticed the strange mounting directions of the instruments?
I thought about and may be the reason is to have all needles up in normal operation, so the pilot can verify the actual values with a quick view. Clever solution 8)
Cheers,
Frank
-
Brilliant updates, and your micro additions are great as usual.
About the instruments I can conferm that is still a common practice to install with the dials oriented to have all the needles pointing the same direction with normal parameters, exactly as you suspected.

"And Lance: with your translation to german you surprises me"
Frank,
My Mother's side of our Family were all German Canadians (her maiden name was Seibel) and I grew up for long periods living with them on farms on the Canadian Prairies. I'm told I was pretty good at speaking and understanding the language (as it was spoken in the Alsace) as a youngster, now sadly I only recall a few words. However, regardless of the language that's really nice work! :)
Cheers, (and auf wiedersehen!)

Sorry my friends, after some trouble - I take a deeep breath and put the kit aside for a little pause.
One day I will continue, for sure after that huge amount of effort until now.
In meantime I reactivated a build, which I started 2,5 years ago ::) Will show it here too of cource :-*

Thank you Guy and Andreas!
I keep being tempted by this kit. Would you recommend it?
The Bristol Fighter in general or this variant?
The Fighter kit by Eduard was released 2005, see the time line here, so it is one of the more modern kits. Also including some options, e.g. different tails:
https://www.scalemates.com/kits/1150669-eduard-8126-bristol-f-2b-fighter
This special Crocodile release is a lot of work, you got only a huge amount of mask squares, which needed to be positioned on the model one by one. No help for alignment or so. So you need to decide yourself ;)
The decals printed by Eduard are a bit brittle. I think their actual print quality is better.
A moment ago this model was near to the trash bin ...
A nearly full bottle Extra Thin, Quick Setting falling over on my bench, 1/3 is missing now. The flood was nearly touching the wings! I was able to save them, but it ruined my cutting mat and the smell is terrible ... I was shortly before a heart attack in that moment ...
Such things are really not needed! >:(
Cheers,
Frank

Thanks Frank, that’s helpful.
Re your spillage... that’s just a standard mishap for me!
Guy

Wow Frank, those wings are gorgeous. Sorry about your mishap, glad your croc is still safe.

Thank you very much for this hint! This shows that I'm in many areas a bloody beginner and have to learn a lot.
Its already to late to change it, the oil paint is completely hardened, so the "Medium L" works as advertized.

I have just caught up with this Frank. I am totally blown away by this model - not least those buckles!! The new shark mouth on the nose looks right to me - just a little rough around the edges as I think the original would have been. I seriously doubt whether many of these personalised markings were ever as perfect as represented on transfer sheets - they were applied in the fileld with whatever paint was to hand after all.
Stephen.
-
Thank you Rick, Dave, Antonio, Giuseppe, Andreas Stephen for your supporting words!
Fantastic recovery, I cannot wait to see that one at FFB!
Only 3 weeksends left :o and still a lot of work. Hopefully just in time.
I have just caught up with this Frank. I am totally blown away by this model - not least those buckles!!
I try to improve my technology with every model, but this is the limit now in that scale.
Really pitty, that I cannot buy such parts.
I seriously doubt whether many of these personalised markings were ever as perfect as represented on transfer sheets
Sure, but to paint markings like this by hand would be a lot of effort, and I'm not that good with hand painting.

Clear sprue, very clever.
Ryan
Agreed! You can make something simple into a lesson that just seems incredible! The next time I need a sight I will certainly give this idea a try!
RAGIII
-
I love the clear sprue idea, I will note it on my pad.
It's difficult I think, to find clear plastic that thin, also the sprue is normally much thicker.
-
Absolutely wonderful Frank. BTW te simplest ideas are usually the best!
Stephen.
-
Andonio,
Frank can correct me, but could you not stretch clear sprue just like colored types?
Ryan
-
Thank you Guy, Andreas, Ryan, Rick, Andonio and Stephen!
It gave me perverse delight to surprise you with such an idea ;)
Ryan, I used streched clear sprue. It is typically stronger, not so easy to stretch, but it depends really on brands. I made a good experience with the newer kits by Eduard. I built a 1/4 scale instrument panel from a Eduard kit, and due to a lot of clear parts the sprue was bigger then usual.
Another solution is also possible: I put a piece of sprue into my lathe an turned it to a smaller diameter, but you will need very sharp cutting chisel for that.
Cheers,
Frank

I am sorry to say, I do not know the answer to your question. But I would like to join the praising chorus. One of the best builds I have ever seen...
-
Conjecture on my part, but could be instructions to pilot (turn left, dive or turn right). That way the gunner could have a better field of fire/evade attacker? Just a guess on my part. Love what you are doing by the way.
-
Thanks Frank (and Ryan as well)... I did not imagine transparent sprue would keep its "transparency" once heated and stretched. Will make a try.
What was the use of that weird tool with the icons you are asking about those left side fields?
:-0
-
One of the best builds I have ever seen...
Wow, what a great homage, and from a very experienced modeler, THANK you very much!
could be instructions to pilot (turn left, dive or turn right). That way the gunner could have a better field of fire/evade attacker?
Thank you Juan! You have not seen the model together, but this is not possible, because only the pilot can reach the board on the upper wing. The gunner is to much aft.
What was the use of that weird tool with the icons you are asking about those left side fields?
Andonio, the left side are symbols for own aircrafts (cockade), a unknown aircraft ("?") and germans (with the cross). So the pilot can tip to the cross and then the direction to tell the gunner: "See, there is a german"
A friend come up with the idea, that the colors are related to arming (red to cock the guns for example or white to secure) or may be related to bomb release.

Frank

Lovely work on more and more details. Top class modelling!
Still, I have a doubt. I remember when building my F.2B I could not find any photo from the era showing the shutter control mechanism depicted in the TVAL replica. Have you got any confirmation for this, seemingly pure-WNW concept?

I am curious to see that one in reality next weekend.

That would be a full time job, but I would not be able to do that rigging the whole day. And beside that sanding wooden props?
Sorry, I have not enough time to build all the nice kits in my stash ...
Still, I have a doubt. I remember when building my F.2B I could not find any photo from the era showing the shutter control mechanism depicted in the TVAL replica. Have you got any confirmation for this, seemingly pure-WNW concept?
May be you are right, good point!
One confirmation is the technical point of view. There is no way inside to control it, because of the radiator. So even the thin pipes of the sync gear of the Vickers-MG running around the radiator and run into the fuselage just behind it. So it seems plausible.
And on the Windsock Datafile vol 2 there is on page 15 a picture showing the wires and lever very similar, even if the shutter itself is a different type.
Many pictures showing earlier F.2 wihtout a shutter at all, but if with shutter, I think it needs to be controllable.
I am curious to see that one in reality next weekend.
And I am curious to see you (and your face with seeing my (newer) models the first time) ;)
The rudder is in place and control wires added too - again a special story! I need to prepare update and pictures ...
So I will not add further parts, but I need to apply some light weathering with oils and pastells.
Cheers,
Frank

Frank,
For what it's worth I came to the same conclusions on my WNW version 5 years ago; and although I can't recall where I finally found the reference photos I believe it was in one of the Albatros Publications. I did the lines crossed as did you and the same "bracket" assembly:

Great work on this beautiful model you've done here!!

Still, I have a doubt. I remember when building my F.2B I could not find any photo from the era showing the shutter control mechanism depicted in the TVAL replica. Have you got any confirmation for this, seemingly pure-WNW concept?
May be you are right, good point!

It is definitely a good point!
Once again - great modelling!

Simply lost for words. The amount of detail is breathtaking. If that does not win a prize I will eat my hat!

WOW my friends, what a great feedback!
So nice to see how you manage to dance along the fine line between genius and madness.
Manni, how true! And that line is very fine ::)
If that does not win a prize I will eat my hat!
Stephen, you don't need to eat your hat ;D
At first I got a Bronze medal - for the SE.5a "Night Fighter" and ...
finally this damn Crocodile reached GOLD! And I got some very nice words from the jury afterwards.
So this model takes a huge effort, but it finally I'm totally happy with the result - the model itself and the result of the contest.
I hope I can create a entry in the completed section with the final pictures next week.
Cheers,
Frank

Congratulations Frank on both awards. The Crocodile is certainly of Gold standard in every possible way.
