Hi!
I've started to build my FE2B.
I've chosen the 6341 because it's well documented, so I can add some details without too much guessing ;)
The kit is wonderful, but needs some minor tweeks to represent the 6341 (it's impossible to make a kit perfect for different subjects of the same aricraft):
- On the rear of the nacelle there are some missing rigging holes
- The rigging holes on the front should be moved a little back
- The hole on the left side of the cockpit for the mg mount should be higher than the the one on the right
- The shape of the two holes on the cover should be more rounded (should be refined on my model, I've to thin the plastic more)
- I have also cut in half the plate on the back of the pilot like Przemol did, so I can achieve a better finish on the side and work easier on the central part

I also started to work on the engine. For now I have onlyreplaced the carburetor rod with a copper wire, more later... :D
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/03-Copia_zps92b7ea4a.jpg)
This will be a slow w.i.p..... I'm building other models and I have not much free time (now two weeks in China for work)
C&C welcome
Bye!
Andrea
-
It is beginning as tutorial, how to do good airplanes model.
I will be watching carefully. ;D
Adam.
-
thanks!
But I think that wil be a tutorial also for me, I want to try some new technics! ::)
For example on the engine I have used for the first time the Alclad.
I was a bit scared because I have read some comments about how was difficult to use, but I was surprised how well it went, both the primer and the aluminium. Maybe beginner's luck?? :P
-
I never used Alcad, so I don't help you. :(
Adam.
-
Alclad is fairly easy to apply as long as you take your time by building up many thin layers and making sure your airbrush compressor is set to around 10psi.
You don't always need to prime the part for Alclad to work - bare plastic works, also.
Von Buckle ;)
-
I'll be following along with great interest as your build progresses. I'm looking forward to your next update.
Cheers,
Chris
-
This is looking like an interesting and informative build Andrea, will be watching with interest.

It is never too many Fees to see being built! Great start. And never mind being slow.

I agree, Andrea. I'll be watching this with interest.

Thanks for all your comments!
Tomorrow I'll leave forh Cina so I will not submit nothing new for 2 weeks...
But there's a nice model shop in Beijing, so maybe I can buy some tools and other bits at a good price ::)
See you soon!
Andrea

Have fun in China, Andrea! Be sure to see that big wall they have there. I hear it's great.
Cheers,
Bud

Hello!
Back from China (I have seen the big wall....it's big! ;D )
back to work: I've started to make the wooden parts (usual acrilic base, oil paint and sponge) and I went on with engine (lots to do but the base color is on)

But in this picture there's something that I don't understand, maybe someone can help me.
Image taken from Wingnut Wings website
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/Mount.jpg)
Basically seems that inside the fuselage there is a reinforcement for the mounting block for the MG mount and also a couple of metal reinforcement (at least looks metal... it looks like the metal cockpit surrounding). I haven't seen other pictures that can confirm this, any idea?
(the image is small, but I used the image found on Wingnutwings website, I don't know if I can post a scanned image from the instructions....)
Thanks!
Andrea

Hello! I'm back, very busy in the last months... ::)
anyway... I've done some work
I've built the cockpit and went on with the engine. Still some wires to add, but I'm almost there. The safety belts are only placed in the cockpit to adapt them to the seat, but they aren't glued or painted yet.

I've also started painting the wings.
here's how I tried to replicate the canvas effect on the wings: I've painted the base with Misterkit CDL, masked all the ribs and the structural parts, then I'v sprayed Tamiya buff. the work it's not finished but I like the effect, what do you think?

Nice CDL, Andrew and the rest of the Fee is shaping up nicely ;)
Keep going!

The more fe2b I see the more I'm convinced I need to do one.
Good job.
-
Lovely work on the engine Andrew, and your choice of CDL is excellent, this is coming together beautifully.

I got this kit at Christmas, and out of all the WnW kits I have, this one impressed me the most. A big box with hundreds of parts crammed inside, full of detail everywhere.
That CDL looks perfect, very nice work on the engine too!
-
Andrew,
She looks great in CDL my friend. Excellent work on her engine as well. Looking forward to the next great update.

Thanks for the comments :D
A small update, I've started the interior painting.
looks a bit contrasted, but when the fuselage it's closed it's ok

Very nice, Andrew. Just let me point out, that the rounded front of the nacelle was not in linen colour, it was made of thin plywood stripes.

Thanks,
About the nacelle I have to check, because, If I recall right, on the windsock datafile it says that on the 6341 the front nacelle had linen over the plywood... ??? This evening when I'll be back at home I'll check my reference.
Thanks for your comments anyway, always appreciated ;)
edit:
http://wingnutwings.com/ww/productdetail?productid=3044&cat=4 if you look at page 5 it says that was covered in linen... and on page 9 there's a picture... Do you think that are right? maybe I can change a lttle the tone to make it look different from the side of the nacelle
-
Hello Andrew:
Looking good so far. I like the engine work. The contrast of colors is really striking. This will be an attention getter when the model is completed. Your wood work is the business. Nice and warm. Can't help you on the front of the cockpit area. Check your references and go with it.
Best

I must have seen somewhere a photo showing the interior nose section with veneer. It might have been without these linen reinforcement. And this is how I depicted it in my Fee - not CDL but wood. I will try to look through my references this evening.

I think that usually they were without linen, but on this particoular plane the veneer whas covered.

I think this is the aircraft I'll choose too, I love the patchwork finish on it. I hadn't noticed the light colour of the interior nose section before though, but the references do show it quite well indeed.

Andrew, I have checked my references. You are absolutely right - the nacelleveneer was additionally covered with linen. And what I claimed earlier, was inspired by a photo from WD "RAF FE 2b at War" of the TVAL replica Fee, where the said linen is varnished in a dark hue, almost in the wood colour - absolutely darker then the nacelle sides.

Hello!
A small update.
I've made the green parts on the wings, not great pictures, in real life the green parts are more "alive" and contrasted. . Now they are ready to receive the gloss for decals and weathering

Brilliant work on the CDL, Andrew. It looks like real fabric over frame.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Andrew,
The CDL portion of the wing is absolutely brilliant, you've done an incredible job on the shading and I can't imagine it being done any better. This build will be very interesting to follow; looking forward to lots more.
Cheers,
Lance
-
My brain is too small to think of the way that you did that effect.
-
Excellent work, Andrew. I'm also looking forward to your next update.
Cheers.
Dal.

I am joining the chorus, that CDL is truly outstanding.

Um, yes me too. Wow.

Thanks for all the nice comments :)
Some more work
I' went on painting the seatbelts, I've added few pieces and the clips for the mg mount. They're made by cutting some strips from a photoetched set frame.

Um, wow. On the white aeleron and center upper wing, that is the most realistic look of struts/spars showing through linen covering that I have seen. Outstanding.
I just saw that others have said the same thing. Sorry to be repetitive (I often look at pictures before reading to my detriment). I would love to see your steps to do this though.
-
Hello Todd:
Outstanding craftsmanship on the cockpit. At first I thought I was looking at a museum recreation of the cockpit. The machine gun clips are absolutely fantastic, and I imagine were a fairly simple task to accomplish.
The wings are equally outstanding.
Looking forward to more.

That cockpit floor is amazing. I sure wish I could end up with results like this.

Without doubt the best rendition of CDL on the wing centre section EVER! :o
Superb!

I think he scratchbuilt the center section framework and covered it with linen. IMHO. ;)

;D maybe next time !
Seriously, I'm very pleased with results, this was my first try with CDL (beginner's luck ? ??? ).
A great help come from the build article in Windsock worldwide Vol.27 by Ray Rimell :D
This evening or tomorrow I'll post some new pictures, Iv'e made some new things for the cockpit and painted the wing struts.
-
Hi!
Some good things and some bad things... let's start with the good ones
The work is going on:
I've added more details to the observer's cockpit
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/th_clip_02_zpsdd8e66bb.jpg) (http://s1240.beta.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/FE2B%206341/clip_02_zpsdd8e66bb.jpg.html)
Painted the wood grain on the wing struts
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/th_Struts_05_zps0436d1ac.jpg) (http://s1240.beta.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/FE2B%206341/Struts_05_zps0436d1ac.jpg.html) (http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/th_Struts_01_zps694d8de1.jpg) (http://s1240.beta.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/FE2B%206341/Struts_01_zps694d8de1.jpg.html)
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/th_Struts_02_zpsb3da65a5.jpg) (http://s1240.beta.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/FE2B%206341/Struts_02_zpsb3da65a5.jpg.html) (http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/th_Struts_03_zpsc9234f74.jpg) (http://s1240.beta.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/FE2B%206341/Struts_03_zpsc9234f74.jpg.html)
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/th_Struts_04_zpsd2b78b1e.jpg) (http://s1240.beta.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/FE2B%206341/Struts_04_zpsd2b78b1e.jpg.html)
And finished the ailerons
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/th_Aileron_01_zps7672a872.jpg) (http://s1240.beta.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/FE2B%206341/Aileron_01_zps7672a872.jpg.html)
And now the bad news... I lost a part!!! The water pipe that goes
from radiator to engine. This part:
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/th_pipe_01_zps38399e78.jpg) (http://s1240.beta.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/FE2B%206341/pipe_01_zps38399e78.jpg.html)
I guess is the usual sacrifice the carpet monster ::)
Luckily it's not a difficult piece to scratch build.
I made a quick attempt with a plastic rod and seems to work.
Now I've to define the right dimensions and so on, but it's just a matter of time.
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/th_Water_02_zpsb9119597.jpg) (http://s1240.beta.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/FE2B%206341/Water_02_zpsb9119597.jpg.html) (http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/th_Water_01_zps94746658.jpg) (http://s1240.beta.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/FE2B%206341/Water_01_zps94746658.jpg.html)
Now the first think that I'll do is to finish this part, then I'll go on with the build.
Andrew
-
superb wood finish. The clear doped sections are very realistic as well!
Regards
Flip
-
Andrew, you've set a new standard for CDL finish. It really looks the part! ;D I may have missed it earlier, but what paints did you use to achieve the CDL effect over ribs and spars? Thanks.
This overall build is excellent. Thanks for sharing. Your final result is sure to be a winner!
Regards,
Bob
-
Hello Andrew:
This is really looking good. Your CDl is top notch and certainly looks the part. After you have the model finished and begin cleaning off the work bench, the errant cooling pipe will show up! I guaratee it.
Your cockpit detailing is really neat as well.
Looking forward to seeing this unfold.

The new water pipe is done , I've to add only some minor details
I've also add more spark plugs wires (no painted yet).

Beautiful and well done work my friend. Looking forward to seeing more.

Yours painting fabric surfaces is very very good, I' waiting for the rest.
Adam.

Okay, seriously. Do you get your linen effect by starting with a PC10 (or darker?) undercoat, next coat is overall CDL, then a final shot of CDL over the ribs? The masking must have been an effort, to say the least. Can't wait to try it out.
Lindsay

Luscious.

Actually I've done it in reverse: light colour, masked the ribs (I used a 0.75 mm tape, so it was a bit long, but not too difficult) and oversprayed with dark colour ;)
-
Well, there you have it. Thanks for sharing.
-
hi!
It's time to think about the rigging...
I've decided to try the rb production photoetched "raf wires".
I've tried on the tail and I think it can work (the size of the rigging I've used is to big for this part, but I've allready ordered a smaller size rigging, this is only glued with a little white glue to test).
A question for the experts: the wires where painted or where in natural metal finish? The fixing brackets where black , right?

In the case that it will not work I'll revert to the classic buckles and wires rigging ;)
-
That looks nice Andrew. I tried the RB RAF rigging and gave up, it was too fiddly for me. Someone with a lot of patience can do wonders with it as I have seen. Yours looks real good situated like that, and it is visible.
Looking forward to seeing how you progress on this.
Best
Mark

I'm so glad you're doing this, Andrew. I've got 3 British WNW subjects waiting in the stash and I've been tempted to try the RAF wires, but have been put off by the many nightmare stories surrounding them. The one you have in place really looks the business and if you can pull this off, I will definitely give them a try.
Cheers,
Bud

It does look great, I agree, and I am rooting for you to pull this off.
Looks like Gaspatch has another option now (http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=1172.15) with RAF style turnbuckles...

Andrew,
I do appreciate the work you've done rigging with RB RAF Wires. I'm afraid they'd be far too fiddy for me to pull off correctly. As others have mentioned they do certainly look great. Keep up your outstanding progress my friend.

Some pictures of the closed fuselage (the colurs of the pictures are a little bit off... I should work with manual settings of the white balance the next time ....)

Hi!
I've painted the fuselage.
I've decided to paint the black and white stripe on the nose,
the wingnut decal is very good but I it's too perfect .
The masking was easy and I think that the final look is better.
I've started the weathering but there's some little work to do.
(the engine and the wings are not glued yet, I put them in place only for the pictures).

Hi Andi;
We all feel like this when we see some of the builds on the forum, but we look and learn and hopefully we incorporate some of the good points in our own builds and that way we improve ourselves, but if you are not sure just ask, all the guys on here will help with their methods and that way help us all improve.
Cheers

Hi!
Allright, the madness is going on ::)
I've attached the engine to the fuselage and added some wires. Now I've only to weather a little bit the carburetors and I'll be ready to attach the wings.

Hi
I've joined the wings and I've started the rigging.
The plan was to use the rb production photetched wires, but after some trials I've decided to use the elastic wire.
The RB wires looks great, but I think that can be used only on a plane
with very rigid structure. The FE2B as big wings and there's always a little bit of flex, so when you move the model the wings move a little and the wires start to bend.... I think that can be used on smaller models that have a more rigid structure, maybe the Sopwith Snipe.
Anyway it's all experience and now thee rigging with the elastic wire is is going well, I'll keep you apdated

IMO you have chosen correctly the rigging material. I think there is no hope for any inelastic material, no way to rig a model without bending. I would say, even not the Snipe.
Well, rigging the Fee was one of greatest experiences in my modelling life. Enjoy every moment of it, too, as much as I had!
-
Loveely work,It's the rigging that scared me away from the Fee but I agree with everyone, elastic rigging is essential to keep it tight.
-
Andrew,
This is turning out to be an absolute thing of beauty; I don't have the courage or skills to tackle a Fee or a DH2 at this point so I certainly admire the beautiful results you are getting on this. Since I have two spools of EZ Line on hand maybe I'll have to give the Fee a try...............but first I'll follow your Build and learn from it!
Nice detail, I'll be following your progress closely.
Cheers,
Lance

Yes , elastic is the way to go :D
I've used a 0.1 mm thread, I've tried also the flat elastic wire to replicate the raf flat wire, but it's too thick and doesn't look right: simple round rigging is the right choice :)
-
I used the elastic offered by WNW for my Fee - the flatness is reduced when put under tension.
Andrew the rigging so far looks very sharp - you always get taut straight rigging with elastic. Just wait until the rigging is complete and you take pics from different angles, it is a real spiders web...
-

I' haven't used the WnW elastic, the one I tried is from another brand maybe that's the problem, but I'm pleased with the result with normal elastic until now... is my first rigging after all.... ;)

Andrew,
Excellent rigging to date my friend. Overall she's an outstanding project.

Looking Good Andrew: It looks as if it would be fairly straightforward as you seem to have access to the rear portion as well as the front portion. Is that white line or some other color. I like it.

The color is white, a little transparent... Doesn't look bad, but I'll try some silver paint on it and see what it will look like

Hi!
I'm back
I worked mostly on the rigging, so there was not much too show.
Now the big part of rigging is finished, and I'm working on another parts.
some rigging detail:
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/th_wire_01_zps38db9658.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/FE2B%206341/wire_01_zps38db9658.jpg.html)
I discovered in some pictures that there are two guides (?) on the left radiator scoop, so I scratchbuilt them with copper wire.
In the close ups they look a bit harsh , but in real life they are ok.
They are not yet painted.

Two views of the model on the landing gear (it needs rigging and the wheels are there only for the pictures, they need some work and the paint).
In the first picture you cans see the scratch built guides on the scoop.

Absolute stunner!

Best regards,
Sasho
here we go!
I painted the CDL this way:
1. A base coat of misterkit clear doped linen
2. I masked the spars, the ribs and other structural parts and airbrushed tamiya buff ( the important thing is that the second paint that you use is darker than the first).
3. When you remove the masking check the contrast and if is too much oversparay a light coat of the base paint to blend all.
4. in this case I masked again and sprayed a light coat of brown paint over the main spars, on some plane this is quite visible, just check this picture http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/files/images/fe-2b/screensize/fe2b-8175-crew-night.screensize.jpg
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/wing_03_zps789f5824.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/FE2B%206341/wing_03_zps789f5824.jpg.html)
A couple of images of the masked ribs
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/FE2B%206341/Linen_01_zps8225da73.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/FE2B%206341/Linen_01_zps8225da73.jpg.html)

This is the first time that I tried this tecnique, but it's not difficult, it takes only a bit of time for the masking
Anyway I think that another possibility is to paint first the spars and then overlay the CDL paint... a bit like preshading. I used this method because it was used in an article in Windsock magazine and looked good!
If something is not clear just ask! ;)
-
Great to see this beauty so close to the end. Fantastic modelling all around, Andrew!

Thanks Andrew. This is a great help. :)
