Well, guys, I finally started this one - or I'd better say 'these ones', as it is my first double build. A fellow modeler asked me if I could do his B II when I would do mine. I agreed, and here I am.
I think the Kit is well known to everyone here, so I won't post pics of the sprues here. You find an abundance of information on the WNW homepage.
First step for me was a dryfitting of all the cockpit components (as expected they fit perfectly). There is a tube construction containing the rear cabane struts that seemed to be a bit weak in plastic. But then I discovered, that it will not only be glued to the cockpit floor, but on both side parts too, so there's enough stability. The fuselage is cut into four main parts, two sides and upper and lower part. That avoids seems in the middle of the top or underside respectively, as with usual two part fuselages. Cool stuff...
Then came the usual procedure for wooden surfaces: Buff, preshading on the panel lines, lighting up their middle and toning down the whole affair. Then Uschi's decals and after all a shot of clear yellow or orange respectively. Here are first pics of the main parts and the dashboard. Here I used the kit's decals and additional HGW bezels. I also used HGW's seat belts as I was curious how they would look like and they are really fine (although I like my teabag belts too...)
There were times, when I didn't like to have two projects going on for the same time ... Long gone :). I didn't want to let my friend wait until I finished my diorama...

Great start(s) Borsos! The wood looks excellent and that instrument panel is a beauty, lots to like already!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Wow, Andreas! You certainly don't let any moss grow under your feet! Absolutely magnificent wood work, my friend, and that instrument panel looks real. Looking forward to more.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Totally agree about the instrument panel, but the rest of the interior looks top notch too. I will be following with interest as this is on my to build list for some time in the future….
Stephen.
-
Wow, Andreas,
that looks terrific. Great start.
The benefit of this dual-build is that you can choose wich part went out better and put it on your Alby (I'm evil)
Manni

Wooden beauty in the making! Top class start, Borsos.
-
Amazing start. Thanks for sharing! Regards :)

Thank you guys for your kind words!
Some progress today. At first without the seats:
And with the seats glued in. This time I used Uschis leather decals for the seats and Aviattic linen decals for the backs of the seats - the last is completely superfluous, because the backs are invisible once the fuselage deckings are installed.
The fit still is incredible good. This is one of the best kits I've ever built. Critics? oh well, that's difficult... maybe one critical point: the clear plastic is very very brittle so I broke the fuelline of the fuelpump. But it's not visible neither so I didn't replace it. You have to be very very careful when removing the clear parts from the sprue (at least more careful than I was. BTW I broke it on BOTH kits...).

Very Nice, await more pics.

Excellent interior Andreas, stunning in fact.

Very good work indeed. I'm glad you are sharing your build experience with us. This is the next Wingnut Wings kit I would buy. You are setting a high bar for the rest of us.
-
Oh, My! That's Yummy! :o
Cheers,
Bud
-
Andres,
I looks so good. Everything looks perfect from the seats to the wood, the cockpit and and and. Makes me want to build mine, too.
Manni
-
Sorry I am late in commenting. Your cockpit work is brilliant! Beautiful wood tones, very convincing instrument panel, and absolutely clean construction!
RAGIII

I totaly agree whit the above: what else could one say??

Stunning modelling. The interior really odes look like the real thing.
Stephen.
-
Thank you very much for your kind comments!
The fuselages are closed now, primed, polished and ready for the wood procedure.
Everything went flawlessly, although it's a tight fit. I recommend not to spray too many layers of paint onto the interior.
Best wishes
Borsos

Both are looking beautiful Andreas!
RAGIII
-
Looking gooood so far! But i wonder, will there ever be a modeller making the not so challenging, but nonetheless beautiful version with all the wooden parts of the fuselage painted in heavenly light blue? I fear not, as this more likely is an offering for the lesser skilled modellers, who are not to be found here on this forum. Right?
Richard
-
Thank god, your cat is back!
They are both looking good, very good.
Manni
-
Got me, Manni, got me!
-
Hello folks,
thank you very much for your kind comments.
I am slowly making progress with both fuselages. Preshading and painting for the wood decals...
and starting adding "wood"

Richard
I personally love these wooden finishes, but you are right, Richard, the light blue finish is really pretty and would deserve more attention.
Best wishes
Borsos
-
Wow, great work on both!
Steve
-
Incredible job on the wood paneling, the pre shading has paid off. Looking forward to your next post.
-
That wood is wonderful. I think though that I would go for the light blue……..(something to do with my painting skills - or lack of them!)
Stephen.
-
Absolutely beautiful pre shading and wood work!
RAGIII
-
Great woodwork, Andreas! Looks ....wunderbar.
Manni
-
All looks rather splendid to my eyes - well done!! ;)
vB
-
Excellent...!!
-
Andreas! How is it possible that you are building these two exquisite models while at the same time sculpting and constructing such a remarkable diorama?! You are a modeling machine, my dear young friend!
Cheers,
Bud
-
This is on my to do list so I'm watching closely. Great work mate.
Cheers, Medic :D
-
Hello friends,
thank you very much for your kind comments, they are really appreciated! It's quite a while now since I had been on this but now I felt the need to go on with them. My next step was the Mercedes D II engines. The fit is a dream. on my engine I used the aftermarked resin parts from Taurus. Painting was done with the use of Uschi van der Rostens metallic polishable pigments shot with the airbrush (cool stuff!).
That's the progress so far, but sadly I had to realize that I run out of spark plugs.... So bearing the 30% discount in mind I ordered immediately some more parts for future projects at Taurus'. Of course, these engines would look fine without these aftermarket parts, but it's a joy to use them and as the kit didn't make any chalenges until now I have to look for another way to make my life difficult - some tiny tiny resin parts.... :)
Best wishes
Borsos
-
Looks great. But I have nothing else expacted from you ;D
Do you know if the Uschi pigments are resistant to enamel products? They look the same way like AK True Metal waxes, wich blend and wash off when treated with a wash or engine grime effects.
Manni
-
Awesome looking engines (and overall builds are great too)
-
All looks great. I will be looking here to see how should be doing this plane, because my Albatros in on the way to me. ;D
Adam.
-
Really great work on your engine Borsos! Excellent work all around!
RAGIII
-
I don't know how I have missed this thread Borsos but I won't from now on in ;) (I guess it's because there are just so many great posts and simply not enough time to peruse them all).
I've just read through from the start. Superb work indeed - inside and out - simply terrific result on the woodwork and two of 'em to boot. Just excellent :)
Looking forwards to your further progress from here on
Tug
-
That is one beautiful engine! And your progress has been great, with plenty of useful information! A very inspiring build... Regards, Marc
-
+1 -lovely!
-
Borsos,
Absolutely beautiful work my old friend. It's a joy to be following along here. Keep up the excellence.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
Thank you very much for your kind words, friends!
Manni, Ihad no problems when using AK enamel washes on these engines.
Meanwhile I added the engines to the fuselage. Some dust and some grease added... the front Part isn't glued on yet

Fantastic work. Your aging of the surfaces is very, very good. Yet another WNW plane I'd like to try. But I better finish one first.
Thanks for sharing,
Alistair

Gorgeous work Andreas! Your engine detailing and worn wood effect are perfect!
RAGIII
-
Hey Borsos!
The engine turned out great! but what astonishes me is the wood grain and the hue you obtained: to me it is simply perfect!
ciao
edo
-
The wood grain is really excellent, as well as the engine, very well done, Borsos.
Cheers
Ondra
-
Outstanding job on the engine, Borsos, and the rest as well. Your weathering and particularly the final "dust and grease" you applied is exceptional, great work!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Totally agree with all the above, especially Lance. The engine looks worn but still completely serviceable - a fantastic effect.
Stephen.
-
Brilliant work! Andres it is just outstanding.
Looking forward on the next steps.
Manni

Thank you all very much for your very kind comments!
After I had experienced some quite frustrating failed trials on my group building project (I hate motorcycles from now, but that's another story) I took the opportunity to get these here a little bit forward.
(https://picload.org/image/rplgdorw/img_3921.jpg)(https://picload.org/image/rplgdodr/img_3922.jpg)(https://picload.org/image/rplgdodl/img_3923.jpg)(https://picload.org/image/rplgdodi/img_3924.jpg)
and the other one - my one - with engine covers:
(https://picload.org/image/rplgdodw/img_3925.jpg)(https://picload.org/image/rplgdoar/img_3926.jpg)(https://picload.org/image/rplgdoaa/img_3927.jpg)(https://picload.org/image/rplgdoal/img_3928.jpg)(https://picload.org/image/rplgdoai/img_4514.jpg)
Nothing can be seen any more of my weathering on the engine... Well at least we've got the pictures... and the undying memory... Honestly: normally I don't care about details that can't be seen, but I didn't expect the engine covers to cover up the engine that perfectly without leaving any small gap to look inside. Besides of that ironically the engine covers are the only parts where fitting issues occured. This kit seems to be made for leaving them off. Everything else fits like a dream. This is actually the best kit I have ever build yet (until now). Although the engine compartment looks quite complex with all of its details it was just a joy to build and everything fell together. The outstanding quality of the WNW kits is obvious here too.
Another minor change on my B II is, that I had sanded down the diameter of the wheels a little bit to bring them closer to the datafile drawings. The wheels seem a little too fat compared to the scale plans in the datafile. I also used other PE spokes, because I counted the number of the spokes on original photos, compared their number with the kit-PE-sets and found out that two spokes are missing. so I couldn't go on building with a wrong number of spokes..... OK, OK, really, I crushed the kit PE spokes with my clumsy hands and was happy to have some spare PE spokes from an older PART set that fit the kit's wheels quite well.
At last I replaced the connections between cabane struts and upper wings with brass rod. The plastic parts looked too tiny in my eyes and I think I would have broken them within the shortest time.
I hope you like it!
Borsos
-
As usual Borsos, your work is outstanding. You counted the spokes, you are a better man than I.
-
As usual Borsos, your work is outstanding. You counted the spokes, you are a better man than I.
Thank you very much Juan!
But no, I didn't count the spokes. I was just kidding, I had destroyed the kit PE spokes by pure stupidity so I had to find a replacement... ::)
-
Beautiful!!
Steve
-
I like everything you have done on this model, including your exquisite photographs. Your description of how well the engine went together and then got covered up with the cowling made me smile. This happens so much to us modellers. Another pleasurable WnW build eh? Glad to hear your continuing story on this one. Such nice work.
Cheers,
Gary
-
Wow, Andreas! That is some seriously tasty paint and decal work! And the photography ain't too shabby either. Brilliant in every way.
Cheers,
Bud

hi Borsos!
i like your planes very much! in particular I picked up the leather ring arund the cockpit : just beautiful! you painted and weathered it very realistically. what colour did you use?

Hi,
this so incredible good, what i am seeing here.
The B II is on my wishlist and after I have seen this here, she has slid up the list.
Cant wait to see more :D

I agree with my Amigo Andreas. Very Tasty indeed!
RAGIII
-
wow, that looks good! *amazed*
-
Again thank you all very much for your positive comments!!!
They both look superb! Is that the kit wood grain decal?
No it's not. I neither like the grain of the kit wood decals (too overdone in my opinion, not to scale) nor the fact that they are printed onto white decal paper. At last they are quite thick. I used Uschi van Der Rosten Wood decals, I have a custom to them meanwhile ( it's the fourth plane that I covered with them) and it works fine for me. They are thin, quite strong and printed on clear decal paper that makes e. g. preshading possible. I also didn't use nail decals on this one, I gave the engraved nails a strong wash with almost dry oils (rubbed into the holes, then the excess gets wiped off with a cotton pad) under the wood decals.
-
I'm late commenting Borsos, but my oh my, this update is just spectacular. This work is truly exceptional, you are doing a magnificent job on this one!
Cheers,
Lance

Lance, Krow113, thank you very much!
I already told the Motorbike story: http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=7647.75
hi Borsos!

Sorry Edo, I missed your question. I used an AK painting set for leather and belt equippment. It contains a normal leather brown, a bright orange, a dark and a bright tone to lighten or darken respectively and a steel and brass color. I use it for all paint jobs where ever I replicate leather. It doesn't matter if it's a brown or almost black leather. I am a big fan of such color sets

Thank you very much, guys!!! :)
I am finally back on this one and prepared all the flying surfaces of both kits for the decalling.
First pic shows the preshaded upper side of the lower wing.
Second pic shows the stabilizer finished with AVIATTIC linen decals and postshading . The pic doesn't show the great effect of these decals properly. I really love them. But I run out of them and had to order more. Due to the size of the model one needs four sheets for an Albatros B II. And there are two pairs of wings to be covered...
Best regards

Amazing work, Andreas! I can't stop staring at these photos! Yes, those Aviattic linen decals are fantastic.

Do you find the struts are bending then?
If so I may take your timely warning & investigate stronger struts myself.

Wow Borsos, you certainly don't disappoint. Beautiful treatment all around,

Outstanding in every aspect, Andreas! I wish I could reach that level when building an Albi B II
Highest regards
Jörg

Thank you all very much for your positive comments!
Now she's almost done
(https://picload.org/image/rplgdocl/img_4686.jpg)(http://)
She just needs her rigging painted and some small details and touch ups here and there.
As a first resume I can really say that I enjoyed this great kit with its incredible level of detail and engineering quality. Everything from start to the end fit wonderfully and all the flaws that are visible are on my own.
But yes, Russel, I'd highly recommend to replace the thin plastic struts with brass rod. I am sure I'll never build an 1/32 biplane with anything else but brass rod when the original had those thin metal struts. Thick wooden ones are another story.
More (and hopefully better) pics soon in the "completed" section when I finished her base and aircrew....
Borsos
-
Stunning results Andreas! Your build has been great to follow as always!
RAGIII
-
I am astounded by your work, simply outstanding.... :D

I can only agree with what RAGIII and Juan have said above!
super example of modelling all around!

Words can't describe it, she's just OUTSTANDING!!! Another gem from your bench, I especially like the the CDL effect
Cheers
Jörg
-
Looks amazing. And evokes that special feeling - wood, linen and the oil-fuel smell from the bare engine. WW1 aircraft modelling at its highest!
-
Congratulations on a very fine model Andreas, magnificent job! The linen effect is the best I've seen here, simply outstanding modelling!
Cheers,
Lance
-
That is a real winner Andreas. A winner of a build log too - so informative and helpful.
Stephen.
-
Andreas, that is an inspired and beautiful piece of modelling! I spite of a really great build log, I don't think I could ever do anything as perfect! But it is an inspiration, and shows us all what can be done! Lovely! Regards, Marc
