Although it may seem as though I'm jumping on Przemo's Polish band wagon, I've been planning this build for a very long time. It just took his remarkable project to get me truly motivated. Now that the W.12 is done and off the bench, I'm itchin' to get started on this one.

This is the scheme I'll be doing. Hopefully, Przemo will share some of his photos of this plane with me.

Major components:

Now for the tedious task of cleaning the parts. After all the sanding and scraping and cutting, I'll need to wash them with soap and water. Fun.
Cheers,
Bud

Bud nice choise.
I will follow your thread.

Excellent choice of subject Bud, I will be following along closely with your build, I like the scheme you have chosen.

Terrific project, Bud. The cleanup will be tedious but the Karaya castings are really nice.

Hi Bud,
looks like a lot of fun!!! Looking forward for more on your build...

Bud,
Fantastic choice of a new project my old friend. The Karaya DFW is one sharp kit. Looking forward to the first progress.

the karaya dfw kits really arent bad except the first production batch one where they cut some corners. you will have to scratch the ammo box and a few other bits but no problem for a fantastic modeller like you bud. did i imagine you started a wnw hansa w.12. i thought you did but cant find the build nymore.

Man, Bud, not a lot of "down" time between Builds.......... Great subject, looking forward to seeing this one come together.

Great to see you start this project, Bud.

winners, my friend!

Thanks for all the encouragement, fellas! And thank you Przemo for all the terrific photos. They'll be a great help
Yes, Drew, Gregory and Scott, the Karaya D.V is a superb kit. Probably their best. They're all quite good, though. Too bad they're not doing WWI aircraft anymore. I'm really disappointed that the Elephant and the Nie.12 series never went into production.
Scott, I did start a WNW W.12, but set it aside to work on this one.

Not much of an update here, but it always feels good to get the first bit of paint on a model. Got all the interior wood bits done.

Lots of room for scratch building here.

Amen to what Lance & Rick have said! I think your running a production factory. ;)
Great looking progress on your current build! The wood finish looks the part. Maybe a mini tutorial on your technique?
Chuck
-
Dittos to the above !!
Ed
-
Thanks, guys! First off, let me address the questions regarding my wood grain technique. It's nothing special, really. Pretty much what everybody else does.
I start off with Model Master Modern Desert Sand in a rattle can. Yeah, I know, it's sorta cheating and it's bad for me and the environment. Whatever. ::) Once that's good 'n dry, I spray a coat of clear gloss to enable me to work the oils more easily.
After the clear gloss has dried, I mix burnt sienna, raw sienna and burnt umber together, varying the proportions according to the finish I'm trying to achieve (for this application, about 50-50 burnt and raw sienna with just a touch of umber; for an Albatros, about 30% more raw sienna: for darker aircraft, like my Phoenix or Macchi, I used more burnt sienna and just a tad more burnt umber), and apply it with a very soft, medium sized brush, mixing in just a tiny bit of Fast Drying Medium. Oh, I forgot to mention, I pre-shaded the framework with brown pastels before spraying the clear gloss.
Once I've got the oils on, I work the various panels with larger or smaller brushes according to panel size and shape. While it's still a little damp, I smooth it out with increasingly larger soft brushes.
With the use of fast drying medium, it only takes about a day to dry and when it is, I spray clear flat and weather high wear areas with black and brown pastels. I finish it off with clear semi-gloss. That's about it. Of course, I vary it all depending on the subject, but basics are about the same.
Hope that was somewhat clear. I lost track.
Cheers,
Bud

I've completed most of the components for the front office. I felt the control column was kinda clunky, so I made a new one.
For the Pilot's seat, this is pretty much all ya get. No padding, or auxiliary tank.

The kit instrument panel is okay, but there are no ammo cans, so I made some.

Des.
Thanks, Des! It ain't WNW, but not a bad kit for 1/48 scale resin. Beats the hell out of Omega, right? By the way, the guys that did the Karaya 1/48 resin kits are now Silver Wings, making some very cool but very expensive "between the wars" stuff in 1/32 scale. There's a teaser on their website hinting at a WWI subject in the future. Fingers crossed.

Thanks, Przemo! Just trying to keep up with you, buddy! By the way, this build has piqued my interest in post war Polish air service and the Polish-Soviet war. Can you recommend any books on the subject?

Thanks, Amigo! One of the advantages of having the WNW site to refer to is that there are excellent drawings and photos of the cockpit details. One of the drawbacks is that one feels compelled to add the details.

Now that the pilot's cockpit is completed and in place, work progresses on the observer's office. Karaya provide this as the bomb rack:
So I replaced it with this:

I've also begun work on the engine. Since the top of the engine is all that will be seen, the bottom will reamain rather basic.

Superb work on the new bomb rack Bud, what was Karaya thinking with their representation of a bomb rack ???
Des.

Great modelling, Bud. The bomb rack looks fantastic, but I would be careful with filling it with ordnance. The aircraft in 1 EW were used exclusively for recconaissance work, no bombing was reported.

Outstanding work on that bomb rack Bud! Looking terrific as always!

Thanks for your kind words, gentlemen! At least no one stooped to, "nice rack". Micheal would've.
Got the cockpit in place and the control lines run. Everything is a very tight fit.

Too late, Przemo. :-[ Already have it glued in place. Oh, well. So much for historical accuracy.

The kit provided observer's seat is way too large. Looks like it was special ordered for Kim Kardashian. I made a new one that is more in keeping with the average WWI aviators butt. Also, it will fit with the bomb rack in place, whereas the other one wouldn't.

Hi Bud! This is stellar work so far! It looks very real and shows lovely tones and colours, and yeah, I do love the "Rack"! I'm pleased it's full of bombs so we don't get confused! I'm looking forward to more, it really is taking shape...

PS: Those SilverWings kits are fantastic aren't they. Cheryl ordered their two Italian Beauties ( CR.32 and CR.42 ) for my birthday and Christmas. Been driving me nuts since the arrived last Friday too. She's put them up until the proper time arrives. Until then I'm not allowed to ever drool over the box art. Sheez that's just not Cricket.

Carol did the same thing to me with the RE8 she bought for me for Christmas. It is a bit frustrating, but I've only got 24 days to wait. In the meantime, that glorious Albatros B.II should be here in less than a week.

Well, T, being sorta retired helps, plus my time isn't gobbled up on Messerschmidts and Mustangs. ;)
Getting a little closer to closing up the fuselage. I have the engine ready to install and all that's left is a little detail on the port side of the fuselage interior.
The Karaya engine is beautifully cast, but the instructions are woefully vague.

The fit of the engine is so tight, I won't have to glue it in place. Just the pressure of the fuselage halves will hold it when I epoxy them together tomorrow.

shouldnt this be under "resin kits"

Hello Bud,
Wow, this is just marvellous my friend! Woodpainting, control stick, bomb rack, egine. Again you are modeling using your extremely high standards. Magnificent Bud, and I am sorry to be so late to follow this exceptional build, but I will from now on!
Kind regards
Patrick

Thank you, Ed, Drew, Scott and Patrick!
shouldnt this be under "resin kits"
Przemo and I are having a little unofficial group build, so I want to keep our posts somewhat together. 'Sides, I do so many resin kits, I sorta think of them same as plastic. Aside from some minor precautions, I treat 'em pretty much the same.
One major difference, though, is that there are no locating pins, holes, tabs or slots, so I had to make my own. I'm pinning all tail surfaces and wings. Really, pretty standard stuff.

In the last photo, the tail surfaces are just pinned, not glued.
Cheers,
Bud

Very nicely done Bud, the pins are a must with resin kits, I also use them on my plastic kits for added rigidity.
Des.

nice!

Ver nice Bud. Those tail feathers of DFW C.V have a special charm, haven't they?

Thanks again, fellas, for your support!
Ver nice Bud. Those tail feathers of DFW C.V have a special charm, haven't they?
They certainly do, Przemo! Exquisite shape, but then, I am a tail feathers man.
Got the decals on the fuselage and rudder. They were pretty fragile and the "2" and lightning bolt each fragmented into 3 pieces each. Had to add a lot of water to float them back together again, then some Micro Sol to get them to blend, but I think I was successful.
Look familiar? ;) Now, for a bit of touch-up and weathering, then it's on to the wings.

Just found this build. Never heard of the manufacturer before now. Outstanding work on the cockpit and especially the engine. The wood is very realistic and is it too late to say nice rack? ;)
-
This Build has eluded me until now as well, Bud. So glad I found it, what a beauty! I actually scrolled back a bit thinking I'd somehow dropped into Prze's Blog, neat "Mini" with the only difference being scale. I like this one a lot, great wood, excellent job on the interior finish and detail, super job on the engine and I could go on forever. Really nicely done!
Cheers,
Lance

Just beautiful work, Bud. Yours and Prezmo's DFW MGB is a real treat.
I look forward to your next update, my friend.

Nice job Bud on the decals.
It a strange thing about decals as you never are really sure how then will react until you actually go to use them. I always seem to get a little anchoius when decal time comes along. Great save! If you would not have told us the problems you encountered, I would have thought they went on without a hitch. :)
-
Hi Bud,
All your work done in the cockpit and the engine is absolutely perfect! I am very impressed. This is of great finesse!
Decals are superb!
I look forward to see more!

Exquisit work Bud! Unbelievable what you accomplish in this scale. Such a nice looking bird and a wonderful scheme it is! Well done!!

Thank you all so much for the heartwarming comments, my friends! Always greatly appreciated.
Continued having problems with the fragile kit decals.

This, of course, was all a result of not listening to the little voice in my head telling me that, after all the problems I had with the decals, I should paint the national markings on the wings. My wife, being a mental health professional, always tells me that I should ignore the voices in my head, so I did and went ahead with the decals. Now I know better. I think.
Anyway, with a lot of touch up and additional precautions, I continued with the post shading and got the whole mess to a point where I can live with it. Won't bring home any trophies with her, but this is really just for me.

Also, got the tail rigged, the Spandau installed and the observer's gun ring in place. Progress. At last.

Now, to see about getting those wings installed. By the way, I used the Aviattic light German linen decals over a Modern Desert Sand base, preshaded. Gave 'em a little different flavor.

Merci bien, Arnaud! Listen to the voice in your head telling you to buy this kit. You'll be happy you did. These Karaya kits are still the best 1/48 scale resin kits available. This will change soon, though, with some new goodies coming from Aviattic and Copper State.

Thanks, Ernie! I wish I had painted them. Those are the kit decals, extensively repaired and touched up. I actually used diluted white glue to secure some of the pieces that had pulled off.

Yes, we could do this ;)
-
Thanks, Ondra, Martin and Przemo! Slowly making progress. This is the the third straight kit that I've built, now, where the struts are dodgy or nonexistent. My next build will be something easy, something from Eduard or Roden, where the struts are all there and they just snap into place.
Bottom wing is on and Gaspatch turnbuckles are in place.
For reasons unknown to me or anyone else I've spoken to, the DFW C.V had turnbuckles at both ends of each wire, so I have to repeat this process on the top wing.
Not sure if I mentioned this before, but I used Aviattic CDL (German/AH) for all fabric surfaces. I really love this stuff and will be using it for every build from here on out.
I hope this photo shows the fabric look adequately.
Gloss white is recommended for the base coat, but tonal variations can be achieved with different shades of white or tan.

very nice bud, and the aviattic decals are great, i got the sampler set and did some experiments,it looks great and i will be using it for cdl at the least.

Thanks, Rick, Lukas and Patrick! I think Aviattic will revolutionize the way we finish models. It certainly has for me. Sure, it's a bit more work than laying down a coat of paint, but the realistic results achieved are well worth the effort.

Dear Bud,
amazing construction,
but the DFW C.V did not have turnbuckles at both ends of each wire.
A close look at the photos on site of WNW, shows that there not turnbuckles at the bottom of the wing near the fuselage (foto 1).
Turnbuckles of these wires are placed adjacent to the outer struts in upper wing.

Many thanks, everyone! She finally has her top wing on and she's fully rigged.

Thanks, Rick! I really had fun rigging this one. I used A, B and C type Gaspatch turnbuckles with a combination of Technium monofilament and Modelkasten.

Looking good, looks like you have the turnbuckles aligned perfectly with the "wires"
Ed
Thanks, Ed! With the C type buckles, it was easy. I simply wired an eyelet into one end, giving it flexibility. With the A and B types, I had to do a lot of measuring and pre-alignment. I had planned on using all C's. Thought I had 60 on hand, plenty for this job. Turned out one of the packs of 30 were 1/32 scale, so I just used what I had. Ordered more, but by the time they got here, I was nearly finished rigging. I recommend C types for all rigging because pulling the line tight pulls them into alignment.
Cheers,
Bud

" With the C type buckles, it was easy. I simply wired an eyelet into one end, giving it flexibility. "
Bud,
Your rigging is superb, as is the model! 8)
Do you mean you made your own eyelets attached to one end of a "C" Type Buckle or actually attached one of Bob's eyelets to the Buckle? Whatever you've done you have certainly solved the alignment problem. Nicely done!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thanks, Sasho and Lance!
Lance, on the C type turnbuckles, I run a piece of fine wire through one end of the turnbuckle, fold it at the center, pinch the ends together in a hemostat, hold the buckle with my left finger tips and spin the hemostat with my right hand until I have an eyelet. I clip off the end leaving about a 16th of an inch, then glue it into the hole. The turnbuckle will just flop around until you apply tension. I hope that makes sense. If not, I'll try to take pictures.
She's almost finished now. All that remain are the exhaust and the Parabellum. The exhaust will be a challenge since I have to build it from scratch. The Parabellum will be a breeze since I'm using the new Gaspatch offering.

Thanks, Richard! For me, those linen decals are the way to go from now on. It's hard to see in the photos, but in reality they give the surface much greater depth than I can achieve with just paint. An added bonus is that any decals applied over them really look painted on. You got me hooked, mate!
