Hello,
well I finished the Salmson/Otsu 1 and a Ferrari 250 GTO I was working on simultaniously and now it is time for a new project. For some time I want to build a pusher and specifically the Fe2b. This aircraft is so.....ugly..erm no,....so beautifull that I just have to work on one, no matter if I go slightly mad with rigging :)
I was wondering between scheme C and D and finally decided on C because of the fancy asymetriccal wing painting.
I started some time ago and here are the first pictures, there is still a lot of work to be done before actually closing teh nascelle, but I was testfitting today, when decided to make some photos. SO here are the first pictures, as usually any comments, constructive critism or questions are most welcome!
Best regards,
Sasho

It looks jolly good already, I agree the wood colour is a spot on! Keep up the good work!
-
Great detail Sasho, and your "woodwork" is superb! 8) I'm getting closer to pulling this one out of the stash, I have a feeling yours may speed up that process!
Cheers,
Lance

I concur with all the remarks made so far Sasho - lovely woodwork indeed. With one of these on the way from NZ I'm looking forwards to your further updates with interest ;)

Aaah, it is so delicious to see yet one more Fee being build. Great start, Sasho!

Sasho - I really love the colour effect you have on your wood - can you tell us what paint/varnish colours you used? It certainly has an extremely realistic look to it and I'd love to try to emulate it.
Great start BTW - looking forwards to more updates, I now have one on the way thanks to yours and Rhami's builds ;)

Guys, thank you very much for the so many and so nice comments, they are appreciated! I'm detailing the cockpit, adding lines, etc. I still haven't decided how deep should I dive into the detailing trap....while I want to recreate every detail, I also want to finish the build in few months and not few years :)

@Tug and zavod44: nothing fancy regarding my woodgraining technique, it is the standard Oils over acrylics, a bit tweaked to my personal preferences. Yesterday I just started to paint the inside of the nascelle, so I will take pictures that will be posted with my next update. I can strongly reccomend to check Bertl's builds where he explained the same technique with a way better result than I will ever achieve....and many others that I absolutely shamelessly have stolen, used and abused :)
-
Thanks for the response Sasho - it wasn't so much the technique you'd used as I had guessed you'd used oil over acrylics but what attracted my attention was that lovely honey yellow colour. What I'd really like to know if you wouldn't mind revealing all is what your specific colours were both in the acrylic undercoat and the oil overlay. The effect you have is very reminiscent of boxwood and looks extremely effective and I'm certainly going to try to achieve the same effect on my next model. I look forwards to your next pics - perhaps you wouldn't mind elaborating a little on your choice of colours as well.
In the meantime I shall do as you suggest as well
Regards - Tug
-
Ooooooh.... oil paints, great I'll get started then......Thanks....
-
as I said, nothing fancy about the technique itself, it is the usual oils over acrylics. The nest pictures shows the paints - the first one is for the acrylic underlayer, on the Fe.2b I used mainly Gunze Radome. The second one is the oils with the accelerator and the third one is for the mix that seals them. For this I use 1:1:2 clear Yellow:clear:orange:clear. This makes the mix a bit more transparant and provides better control of teh final color.
If you have more questionss let me know:)

A small updat efrom me, recently I have been travelling and there was not much time for working on the model, but I was able to do some things. First I painted the inside of the nascelle, finish the instrumental panel and run the cables inside, I started working on the engine (still on very early stage) and now I'm wondering how much time I want to spend on it. I was goingt o use HGW's seatbelts, but the are way smaller than the original ones and from pictures they seem smaller than they have to be - more like 1:48 scale, so I decided to go with the original WnW PE and paint them. The result and a comparison picture bellow. The next step is going to be to paint the wings and the tail, while working on the engine, so I can attach them immidiately after I close the nascelle. Aviattic's Phelon&Moore bike is also nearly ready and will be addition to the Fe.2b :)
Here are some pictures.
Any questions, comments or constructive criticism are most welcome!

Looking great!
How do you prevent the paint from cracking when you manipulate the seatbelts in to position? I had so much problems with that that I bent mine first then painted.

Sorry to interrupt, but I think the problem is probably with paint layer thickness. I have bent airbrushed PE seat belts many times and never had issues. Two more things - I use acrylic paints and I do not bend sharply.

Probably what Przemol says is righht. I can't remember of any case with the paint peeling from the PE, I use acrylics and I airbrush them. But before this I add Mr. Metal Primer, it is completely clear and once dry practically invisible.
Beautiful work, Sasho! I'd like to see more photos of the Aviattic bike. It looks like you've done a great job with it!

George, I started working on teh Aviattic's bike some time ago and the link is here (http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=5964.0). The initial idea was the other topic to have both the Fe.2b and P&M bike's build logs, but then I forgot and opened a new topic. Maybe Des, can merge them, but I don't really think that it si mandatory :)
Lately I started doing some test fitting of the interior and the nascelle and the engine, some detailing in the cockpit and the observer's place. Nothing major, just small details here and there. The crew's area is quite visible, so it is good to be a bit busier.

I also started working on the engine . Unfortunately for me, this a/c was fitted with the 120hp version of the Beardmnore engine, unlike the Vintage Aviator's replica, that have the 160hp version, which means that pictures and data are way more scarce for 120hp. Still if anyone decide to detail it, here is a usefull link (http://collections.museumvictoria.com.au/items/407597)
I have the aviattic's set of priming cups for beardmore engine, but I'm not sure if they should be used on the 120hp version or not? If someone can help I will be gratefull!and here are the pictures of my attempt at detailing so far. Ofcourse the work is still quite early and there are many more things to be added, but I'm working on it.

Hi Sasho - that's excellent progress and looking really great :)
I have today found two booklets long forgotten and squirrelled away - one is 'Air Board Technical Notes' on WW1 engines which, having just checked for you, contains info on the 120 hp Beardmore. Though there's is not a great deal of external pictorial info I will scan the pages for you if you don't already have them. You'll have to wait until next week though as I'm getting ready for the trek to Telford tomorrow morning. I'll try to keep it in mind to do it when I get back but should I forget (easy these days ::)) just give me a prod!
Mine (FE2b) arrived today :)

Sasho, please tell me what you are using to thin the Mr. Metal Primer? I was told to use white spirits and did so...and ended up with a cup full of what looked a lot like, well, snot.
This build is looking great! Really coming together!

Hi Michael,
It seems that I use the Tamiya version and not Mr Color version....excuse me for the confusion! I use the rattle can version, so there is no need to thin it, but the thing smells heavily like a enamel, so I suppose enamel based thinners would do the job. Have you tried Mr. Paint thinner or Mr. Leveling Thinner? The last one is my personal favorite, I dilute nearly everything with it - metalizers, enamels, acrylics etc. The only paint that doesn't work with it so far are Valejo's acrylics! On another hand I always use primers in Rattle cans as they(primers) are hard to clean from the airbrush and the cans are covering large areas better than the airbrush with its tiny nozzle:)

Thank you again guys for the encouragement, it really helps me stay focused on this project :)
I think I come to a conclusion regarding the priming cups - when you pay special attention on the 160HP version manifold and the picture of the 120hp engine from wikipedia, it is visible that the places for the priming cups are there, but the priming cups themselves are removed, so I will be using them :) Here are the pictures with some pointers:
Many thanks to James Fahey

I revoke my words from yesterday regarding those priming cups - from the archive photos on WnW website, it is clearly visible, that at least 6341 at the time of capture by the Germans, doesn't had them (erm..did I used the English tense right in the previous sentence? Probbaly not, but how shoul it be formulated?). On another hand, every picture of different engine I see, shows some minor differencies with the rest. Probably some 120hp engines had them, some doesn't. For me the important thing is that my particular Fe.2b was without them.
Yesterday I was working on staining the engine and maybe I got a little too far, but as can be seen by pictures, those engines were leaking heavilly so it is not that far from the original and it works for me! I changed the pushing rods with 0,5mm brass rods, that were chemically blackened. The original plastic was 0,7mm and too thick I think. I also added the spark wires and I'm moving to the manifold now.
Any comemnts, quations, reccomendations or constructive criticism are most welcome!
Best regards,
Sasho

Lovely beardmore, Sasho! I think your weathering is just right.
As for the priming cups, I scratch build them for my Late 160hp version inspired by a footage someone linked in this or another forum of TVAL FE2b being started. There was a service person filling the cups. But if I were you, I would stick to the photos of your example.
-
More lovely work Sasho, your engine looks very good indeed. I have just emailed you as promised but looking at what you have achieved so far don't think the info is going to be any real help from a visual aspect, still you may find something of use.
Keep up the good work, I'm watching with a very keen interest ;)

Guys, your words are flattering, thank you!
@ Tug: Thank you very much, the informatuion is VERY usefull and especially interesting!
I closed the nascelle and attached the undercarriage. With this the first external rigging lines were put at their place.....more to follow....many, many more! All the metal parts were sprayed with Alclad Stainless Steel, the chipping fluid, green colour by Mr. Color and then the actual chipping. Maybe a went a bit too far on the armored plate, but I like it :). I chipped the undercarriage according to the archiving pictures available at WnW website and found around the web. The green was toned with lightwer and darker shades and weathered with different brown washes. The white and black stripe was masked and sprayed as I wasn't able to make the decal look good, so in the end I just sprayed it. I will continue with the exterior detaild and the wings, stay tuned!
As usually any comments, advices, constructive criticism or questions are most welcome!
PS: I just saw that a piece of the engine got unglued ... I have to fix it!

Hello,
and thank you for the good words!
It is time for a new update, after the engine and the fuselage I painted the wings, those things are big and have a lot of struts and bits. I have the external details PE freat and intend to use it. SO I removed all the applicable details from the wings and painted them with Tamiya and Mr.Hobby Color acrylics. There were several layers with different shades of every color for variability. A gloss coat, the decals and a semi gloss coat followed.
The struts (not shown on a picture) and the tail frame followed, painted again like the cockpit with oils over acrylics. Speaking for the nascelle, I decided to scratch some minor details as an exercise. I think those turned good.
I also started the rigging preparation and in the following days the real rigging will commence.
As usual any comments, question, reccomendations or constructive criticism are most welcome!
Best regards,

Hello guys and gals,
Merry Christmass and happy new year, I wish all the best to everyone and their families!
There was no update for quite some time as I was working on the rigging and it is nearly done - I have to attach the elerons, the tail and the steering cables connecting them :) Then the armament and the tail skid nd it will be finished!

Sasho great job!
Love the application of the 3 way splitter far better than the flat PE version! The over all effect is stunning!

Hello and Happy New Year :),
Thank you very much for looking at my build and eventually commenting :) It is very encouraging and push me to continue with the build :)
well the new year came, I got a damn flu and my plan of finishing this build during the holiday went to dust. I was able to just today do some work on the plane and meanwhile my beloved one was able to drop it on the floor and do some damage. The worst is on the undercarriage, where the "fork" for the front wheel is missing and I can't find it. I will have to scratch something or order a new parts from WnW....well I will try scratching it first. There were some damage ont he struts, but I was able to repair it somewhat, not fully but good enough. Well this is a good excuse to get a new one, probably the late version. After repairing it I worked on the tail and the rigging. I have to say that I hate the flat rigging line by WnW. It is terrible and I probably never gona use it again - it is too soft, have to be coloured and actually rigging it without making "corks" or spirals with it is practically impossible! At the end there is not much difference with the regular round rigging line, just it does look worse :( Anyway I also prepared the tqwo guns, I tried the Gaspach guns and I am very glad with them, they have better detail than the original ones. There is only one thing that I don't like - the bag for the empty rounds is only for such position of the guns as if they are horizontal.... what I mean is that if the guns are in position not for firing, then the bags, being made from canvas, should be bent also (picture bellow), but the supplyed ones are not bent, which is possible only when the guns are horizontal... Well my rant is over, those guns are great.
What is left - the horizontal stabilizer and tail boom rigging, few more lines on the front, attaching the guns, scratching the front wheel holder and the propeller. I plan to carve it from wood and already glued the 7 laminations, but I didn't found time to actually carve it. Hopefully next week.
As usual any comments, constructive criticism, questions or recomendations are more than welcomed
Best regards,
Sasho

It's looking great, Sasho. Sorry to hear about the damage. :'( I'm sure you'll be able to repair and scratch build whatever you have to without too much of a problem.
I noticed the same thing about the bag on the Gaspatch MGs. I used the bag from the DH.2 kit on my Gaspatch Lewis MG because it looks a bit more natural in the way it hangs. The Gaspatch bag looks very stiff. That's my only complaint about the Gaspatch products, though. Otherwise, they are very nice.

The damage at this late stage is very disappointing, I'm sure Sasho. On the brighter side your patience and considerable skills will quickly get this project back "on the rails"! She's a beauty already, and I'm really looking forward to seeing her completed.
Cheers,
Lance

Sorry to hear of the Damage but I am sure you will get it fixed quickly!

Looking better and better. More Fee-ish ;)
-
Oh no!
Don't give up hope though Sasho I lost the pulley to my Fokker E.I and about 1 week later it turned up!
Also might be worth investing in a dust buster or other hand held vacuum, I got one and it has found pieces that I've dropped very quickly!

Hi guys,
thanks for the encouragement, I will definetely be fixing the undercarriage:) I got some more done during the last few days - got the guns attached, but not glued, I want them movable. Rigged the tail and it really starts to look fee-ish :) Started seriously thinking about a base right now. There is a lot of room for improvement in that department, I really don't like my bases. This time will put some more nergy into it and hopefully get a better result. I wonder if I should use some stuff from the garden as there is a lot of moss right now, or get some artificial grass....but it looks...well...artificial and the moss looks more like moss, then like scale grass :(. I also restarted work on the Aviattic's Phelon&Moore bike, that is going to accompanie the Fe.2b and have to get some figures, think there was a crue loading the Fe.2b by Fusilier or Copeprstate maybe, I just can't remember and I will be looking to buy them.
I would like to hear your opinion on the following - the black-and-white band on the nose is a bit uneven. SHould I repaint it or does it looks OK? Probably I have to repaint it
As usually any comments, questions, tips, recomendations or constructive criticism are most welcome!
Best regards,
Sasho

Sasho - it looks truly superb despite your gut wrenching episode. You have a done brilliant job - a real inspirational model.
Re the lost piece - this tip (not mine) has worked well may times to defeat the 'carpet monster' - ask your wife for a pair of her old tights - just explain very carefully why you need them of course ;) Cut the foot off one about 2-300 mm long and slide over the end of the vacuum cleaner hose. Fix in place with a rubber(elastic ::)) band and push the toe end into the end of the hose about 20-30mm. Proceed to vacuum very crook and cranny you can find taking a look occasionally inside the end of the tube - nine times out of ten you'll find your missing piece laying inside. Saved my bacon more times than I care to think about after some pretty exhaustive searches.
Congratulations on some really great work - just hope I can do mine the justice you have achieved
Regards - Tug

Sasho,
That band on the nose looks fine to my eye. The photo on page 32 of the Plans Booklet indicates to me that it was uneven, slightly widened at the front. You've done a really exceptional job on this model, I hope mine turns out even half as well!
Cheers,
Lance

Sasho, incredible finish regardless of the pang!
The band across the nose is perfect - I guess you have been staring at it too long! 8)

Thank you guys for the comments, I decided not to repaint the nascelle :)
The last days I have been working on the last missing parts - the repair and the propeller. The repair have been done, it is not that fine as the orifginal part, but looks good enough.
the propeller have been carved, glossed, a new hub have been created from the old one, some copper sheet and some bolt heads :) Unfortunately I can;t take a good enough picture of it. After taking those pictures I decide to darken it a bit, so I loaded some extra Gloss with few drops Hull Red and darkened it and it is curing at the momnt.
Next update will be of the finished aircraft! I identified the two bladed propeller as Boulton&Paul propeller as there is no iondication which is which, just the numbers of the decals....a mistake ofthen done by someone deep into the matter, that forgot that there aare people that are doesn't know the types of WWI propellers by heart :)
best regards,
Sasho

Brilliant work Sasho!!!! ;)
Some say that RFC and PC10 aircraft are boring but I certainly don't agree with that saying and your fe.2b is a gold example of it!!! ;)
