So, getting back to my plan to build all of Udet's machines in 1/48, having done the Eduard Albatrossen and become tired of replacing engines, reworking landing gear, thinning struts, and cursing misaligned parts, I've decided to try to knock a few off with more (I hope!) straightforward builds. I'm using two Eduard dual combos to build Udet's three known triplanes: 586/17, Kirschstein's ex mount with striped wing and rear fuselage; 593/17, factory with late style crosses, tail chevron, and a small LO! chalked rear of cockpit (seems the larger outline was also chalked in); and 149/17, factory with late crosses and fuselage and tail chevrons (perhaps some doubt about this serial number?). 586/17 is most well documented; the others have fuzzy photos and speculative profiles available online. I won't post photos since I don't know who owns what, but images are easily googleable. I did 586/17 in the 90s with the DML kit, but used Testor's Dullcote in a rattle can to seal and it's yellowed badly. Besides, I didn't end the striping in a vertical line at the cockpit. I may cannibalize some parts, but the Eduard kits are pretty comprehensive. I have the old Americal sheets for the markings although the black decals have weird bubbling and aren't useable.
It seems the only issues with the Eduard Dr.Is are the misplaced wing inspection panel and landing gear struts that are a tad too long. Also some misguided cockpit details placement, but nothing major. Has anyone had any other issues with the kit?

Finally started after a nice vacation. Uschi's woodgrain decals on the fuselage panels. Better photos once I get all the interior details done.

Thanks, everyone!
I'm enjoying the Eduard build, but there is a lot of seam cleanup to be done on the parts. The fit is terrific. I'm adding the internal wires and will have photos tomorrow.
Drew

Taking longer than expected, of course. I had trouble fitting in the cockpit floors and wound up ditching the photoetch compass support and trimming the sides of each floor. Here's one just about done.

Nice looking pit Drew! It has been a while but I think I also had to trim my floor and ditch the PE for the compass!
RAGIII

Thanks, Rick! All three ready to be buttoned up. I painted the longerons on one to simulate their being wrapped in fabric. Rick, I think I stole that idea from you. After the sides are joined I'll add small curved longeron pieces to the corners around the cockpit.

Very nice, Drew! I have enough trouble building one model. How do you guys build 2 or 3 at a time?! :o
George

With George...how do you do that..??!!

Thanks, everyone!
Since I'm building multiple machines it makes sense to me to build at the same time so I can minimize my airbrushing and scratchbuilding sessions. I do have to keep reminding myself why it seems to be going slowly, though. ::)

You are moving at light speed compared to my build rate :D They are all looking excellent Drew! As for the wrapped tubing, I have used that but didn't originate the technique.

very good job I follow you
-
Thanks, everyone! I really appreciate the kind words.
Fuselages are buttoned up now. I like the idea Eduard had with the lower stitching, but I couldn't get it to work. The trench is too deep for the stitching strip and I wound up with either a depression or one side sticking up. I decided to stick them in as far as they could go and smooth out with milliput. I don't have the photoetch stitching I've seen others use, so I may draw in lines with a sharpie. Still more touch up and sanding to go. I also started cleaning up the wings to prep for painting.

Thanks Bud and Martin.
I'm trying to get the brush strokes more consistent, so I make it across the chord of the wing a bit better.
Martin, I did DML's triplane in the early 90s, but I haven't tried this since then.

You have done a very good job with the streaking Drew, like Bud said, the was not a lot of consistency on the originals.

I agree with Bud! The funny thing about when I do streaks is that I usually have a point where I don't like them. Once assembled to the point you have yours, and Markings start to be applied I then begin to feel better. I have liked yours all of the way :D

Rick, I had the same feeling. I think when you look at the individual parts too long you don't get the sense of the overall effect. That's why I stuck the pieces together last night. Probably the worst thing you can do is go over the streaking too many times. It seems clear they just quickly brushed the pieces at the factory.

First shot of Misterkit Fokker Turquoise. I bit too intense, I think. Should be grayer or toned down? Opinions appreciated.

-
Hi Drew,i like your job as so far.
Misterkit color are the most accurate WW1 colors that you can find on market,I know personally Giorgio the howner of Misterkit ant the man that have make the reserch around the world tho keep the real shade of the colors and the toned down for match it in scale.
I personally mix the pale blue whit some white and grey usually 8 0,5 0,5 +extra 2 part of gloss(vallejo or wax) to make more shinny the surface to avoid the heavy coat if use the gloss after the painting step.
Remember Misterkit color are similar to vallejo color so to thin it I use some product like windex or similar(those for clean the windows) in this proportion 60 thinner 40 color,; the frist coat can be very trasparent, don't insist to spray, don't worry , let it dry and the second coat will cover very well.
This procedure preserve all the fine surface details.
I hope is usefull
Saluti
Marco
-
Thanks, Marco, for the vey useful advice. I usually thin with just plain water, but I tried thinning with Windex and am pleased with the results. I've been using Misterkit colors for a few years and they are excellent.
I may give another coat with a slightly lightened up shade of the turquoise.
Drew
-
Hello Drew,
I had thined with water and I sprayed it to my Pfalz Dr I. It goes very good.
Cheers
Martin
-
Excellent job of the streaking, Drew! As for the turquoise, I would
maybe lighten it slightly with a light grey, but not much. It looks
pretty darn good as is. Looking forward to the next steps, my friend.

Thanks again, everyone. Martin, I saw those decals after I had painted! I lightened up the turquoise slightly with a very thin overcoat of white.

Drew

First, I didn't know Udet had flown Fokker Dr-I's, so quite interesting.
And beautifully done as usually. What kind of paint did you use for the streaking on uppersurfaces? oils?
-
Drew,
I've doing a little catch up today. Outstanding progress my old friend.Very impressive Fokker streaking,to my eyes it appears as close to perfection as humanly possible. I'm also impressed with the paint on the engines.Well Done and keep the high standard of skill and craftsmanship.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Houette
-
Thanks, Vincent and Gregory! Much appreciated.
Vincent, Yes, Udet flew 3 triplanes, although there are good photos only of the striped one.
I used Misterkit acrylic Fokker Olive over Tamiya Deck Tan for the streaking. I wet the brush with water first and tried to work quickly.
Drew
-
Small progress, but the streaking is now done on all surfaces. I also shaded the lower ribs; masking all those wings with .5 mm tape was not fun! The upper wing, left middle, and tailplane, rightmost will get the black and white stripes, so I wasn't too careful with them. The props and wing skids also have the buff base in preparation for woodgraining. Next step is to block out the cross positions. I'm going to use slightly different shades of olive and turquoise, figuring field colors would not match factory painting too closely. I decided to use one set of asymmetrical ailerons for 149/17, since it seems to have been in the batch that had them fitted.

Got the cross fields painted on the ones that need it. I used slightly different shades of olive on the tops and sides, and lighter blues and grays on the bottoms. Also weathered them a little. You can sort of make out the contrast in the photos. I haven't tackled the striping on the one machine yet. One machine has the turquoise returned around the tail and sides.

Thanks, Rick and Des!
I am going to add some paint around the crosses to simulate field applied adjustments. Next is to do the black and white stripes on the one machine and move to the serial numbers. I have 593/17 and 586/17 on an old Americal sheet but it may not be usable so I may need to cut up the Eduard and other sheets I have for the numbers.
Drew
-
It's been a while since I checked on this Post, Drew, very impressive progress! Lovely work so far and the three of them together are going to be a very impressive line up. Great "streaking", details, and the engines are terrific, looks more like a larger scale.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thanks, Lance!
So for the serial numbers, I've been using the Eduard set and cutting the numbers apart. for 593/17, I turned the 6 upside down since the kit decals didn't have a 9. I attempted to simulate the chalked in LO! on the sides. The thumbnail comes from an Americal set. I drew the larger LOs with a white gel pen, let it set for a few minutes and then wiped most of it off with a wet paper towel. Still needs a bit of dirtying up and a satin overcoat.

Martin

Thanks, Gregory, Rick, and Martin!
I also painted the white on the one machine and am waiting for some 4mm masking tape to get started on the striping.
Drew
-
Very nice progress!
You have to wonder if the chalked LO! was then painted in with the white on the real aircraft? Or maybe they did not have a chance as Udet moved on to a different a/c?
-
Thanks, Petrov.
It's a good question. There's a 3/4 view of the machine and you can just make out the chalked outline, but it's clearly not fully painted at that point. I kind of like the chalked outline; it's a little different.
Drew
-
Here's the white painted on 586/17. This hand-me-down machine was pretty war-weary and the white didn't seem to cover all that well. I tried to make it a bit translucent.

These three are going to be an impressive collection of Udet Tripes when completed! I am looking forward to seeing the stripes appear on the third one!
RAGIII

Some progress: striping begun, chevrons added. I used decals for all of these: an old Americal and a Roden D.VII sheet for the tailplane chevrons, cut down a bit in both cases, white decal sheet for the fuselage chevrons, and black decal sheet for the stripes on 586/17. Still have to dirty them up a bit.

Thanks, guys! I appreciate it!
Doing multiple builds makes some jobs easier: fewer times cleaning the airbrush, for example. But other parts are more tedious: rib tape masking and small parts cleanup. The Eduard Dr. I is beautiful in so many ways but a lot of the small parts have misaligned molding seams, so lots of scraping and sanding. I'm enjoying making the three in different stages of weathering.
Drew
-
I added the gun blast deflector plates from thin styrene. I embossed the ribs but they're hard to see. Guns are being test fitted.

Small update - not much time of late for modeling. Top wing now glued on and engine, cowling, and prop test fited. I had to enlarge the opening for the prop shaft. You can see the Bob's Buckles rigging attachment for the front bracing at the top of the cabanes. Still have to add that and the aileron lines.

Thanks again, guys!
Headed into the final stretch. The landing gear was my least favorite part of these builds. The struts needed trimming and the four separate ones were a pain to get aligned. Also, I may have glued the forward fuselage bottom photoetch plate too far aft because the struts do not go in the holes. Not too noticeable on the underside anyway. Cowlings still not glued, then have to rig the landing gear and add the control wires. Not much left.
Sorry for the washed out photos.

And it's a wrap! Finally finished. These are beautiful little models but more work than I reckoned. I probably still needed to take another couple mm off the landing gear struts, but close enough. I'll get more shots in the next couple of days and post in the completed models section. Thanks for all the support and kind words!

Thanks, Lance, Kevin, Des, and Rick!
Just a few final notes: I like the look of the photoetch cowling hold-down wire, but it was tough to glue it on after painting without getting CA blobs on the cowling. First, I taped the piece around a pen overnight to get it in shape, and then applied CA with a piece of wire. If I had to do it again, I would add the photoetch piece to the cowl with it extending slightly past the rear edge, then paint it and install so it covers the seam with the fuselage. After painting, I used a sanding stick to expose the metal wire. Looks great.
The plastic foot step and lift grab handles have mismatched seams and look too thick. I scraped the footsteps and used them, but they are prone to breaking and still look too thick. I replaced the grab handles with wire, but that was difficult to keep in place and I wound up with CA blobs on the underside.
Rigging on the landing gear is EZ Line with Bob's Buckles. I used the thicker line and separated it by pulling it apart so the strands are round, not the flat profile. Control wires are invisible sewing thread darkened with a Sharpie. And after the photo I added the wing stacking pads with drops of fabric glue painted dark grey.
