Title: WNW Roland DVIa
Post by: Pete Nottingham on January 25, 2013, 02:46:05 AM
I've decided to start the topic already although I'm waiting for the kit to arrive.

The scheme I'm planning on doing is this one;

(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y5/brodiedog/Roland%20DVIa/scheme_zpsef04caa9.jpg)

I've decided to add some extras that I've ordered;

Faded lozenge decals

(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y5/brodiedog/Roland%20DVIa/upperlozenge_zps64c067da.jpg)

(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y5/brodiedog/Roland%20DVIa/lowerlozenge_zps98677890.jpg)

Spandaus

(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y5/brodiedog/Roland%20DVIa/spandaus_zpse46bfb1c.jpg)

Engine parts

(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y5/brodiedog/Roland%20DVIa/manifoldnuts_zpsd484b968.jpg)

(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y5/brodiedog/Roland%20DVIa/timinggear_zpsfe1e6b71.jpg)

(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y5/brodiedog/Roland%20DVIa/sparkplugs_zpsbd28a8df.jpg)

I'm also adding one of Doug Craners Axial props, which arrived today, it is a beautiful looking laminated prop and I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone.

Cheers for now.

Pete.

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I really appreciate it with the current state of affairs at home at the moment.

Graham, the guns are a great improvement on the kit parts, the barrels are beautifully turned and the cooling jacket is a solid piece, however you do have to use the rear part of the kit gun, but I haven't found it a problem in the past.

Hello Pete,

thank you very much for purchasing. Very nice choose, Roland in very good kit from WNW, but please waiting, we prepare some PE parts on stock during two weeks, I send in PM PE sheet photos. And barrel from Aber are better than Master, more detailed: http://www.nordlandmodels.com/product/a32-040-barrels-for-mg-08-15:15217/ (http://www.nordlandmodels.com/product/a32-040-barrels-for-mg-08-15:15217/)

Thanks Vladimir, I've had a look at the Aber PDF for the guns but they look very complex, a bit too much for me, as I don't seem to have any luck working with complicated PE.

G'day, Pete.  I'm glad to see you making planes again.  I take it this one won't be out-of-the-box? :D

I think you made the right choice re the guns, mate.  The Aber gun set is fiddly (especially the fore-sights for the guns) and really needs to be soldered, rather than glued (I use solder on Master gun sets as well).  But once assembled, they don't look all that better than the Master guns, just a little finer in some details.  Having played with both I prefer the Master sets- the extra effort needed with the Aber sets doesn't give a much better result.

Cheers.

Dal.

First update of the build.

I didn't realise that the cat had struck until after it was dry, hopefully the seat cushion will cover most of it.

And finally one of Doug Craners superb wooden props.

Real disaster reared its ugly head yesterday, whilst building the engine I had all the Taurus mods painted and ready to go, I modded the kit parts, started to assemble the Taurus parts and as I added the rocker arms I looked and thought that aint right the bits don't line up, tried to reassemble the valve springs and they are hopelessly out of line as are the rocker arms, by now it was too late to move the rocker boxes, it looks terrible.
However the not so bad side is I've an old Merc. DIIIau engine from an uncompleted Roland which I've managed to salvage, so this will have to do, it doesn't look too bad.

I have no luck what so ever with Rolands, methinks I will go back to building Albies which I don't have any problems with.

Dont feel too bad. There is an issue with the Taurus D.IIIa camshaft (which Keith pointed out)-- it is about 1mm too long and doesn't line up with the cylinder centers/valve springs without some modification. I'm just getting to this part myself. Keith's solution is to cut it into pieces in order to shorten it; I'm afraid I will have to go this route myself although I'm not thrilled about it because you want that shaft arrow straight and doing this will make that a challenge, to say the least. I plan on pre-boring the camshaft to fit a locating pin before cutting it apart.

Hello Pete:

Yes, each model is indeed a learning experience.  Luckily, you had an extra engine to put in the model.  Sometimes the aftermarket stuff just doesn't cut the mustard.

Looking forward to see how you are progressing.

Title: Re: WNW Roland DVIa
Post by: Pete Nottingham on March 16, 2013, 03:55:05 AM
Well it looks like I can go ahead with the new engine, I managed to get the Taurus camshaft off without any damage to the cylinders, so I will carry on building it with the kit camshaft, which I know fits ok, I will see how things go, I can always fall back on the spare engine if disaster strikes again.

Cheers

Hi Mike, yes I used oils for the woodwork, I use Winsor & Newton Griffin Alkyd fast drying oil colours, they are just like ordinary oils but they dry over night so you don't have to wait for a week for them to dry.

Next update;

The wash on the inside of the cockpit hasn't come out that well, but most of it will be hidden anyway.

(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y5/brodiedog/Roland%20DVIa/rol12_zpsef57fccb.jpg)

This is the engine after the Taurus mishap, having to use the Taurus valve springs, the rest is kit parts.

Maybe you might want to apply a wash to the engine bay, too? I think this will diminish your feeling about a bad wash for the cockpit, as there will be less discrepancy?

The enine still looks ok. I would not change that, again.

Just go ahead!

Your clear varnish over unstained wood looks spot on, Pete.  The contrast between the fuselage and the lightly golden-stained vertical tail surfaces adds a very nice touch. Lovely build you've got going here!

I just keep seeing something new everyday - I'm loving the varnish over timber effect - subtle, and beautiful.

I'll add kudos as well Pete. If you have no luck with Rolands it's certainly not apparent here, the wood planking finish is exceptional! It's looking like a a very nice finished product to add to your display.

Lance

   Pete,
Wow that's some of the best light colored wood work I'm seen by anyone. I absolutely love what you've done. OUTSTANDING!

Hi Michael;

For the wood effect, I used Vallejo Model Air Sand (71075) for the base coat, then for the fusilage I used Winsor & Newton Griffon Alkyd fast drying oil colours, these are the ones that dry overnight, very useful, I mixed White and Burnt Umber to get the light effect and thin coated the fusilage, I added some more Burnt Umber to darken the mix a bit and put a few streaks on and brushed them in, I then let this dry overnight, then put some random dots of the mix on and using a very large dirt encrusted finger rubbed them in.
For the vertical tail, same base colour, then for the paint mix I used White and Raw Sienna using the same technique as the fusilage except for the large finger part.

Cheers

Pete.

Sorry guys, but I missed out a step in my method for doing the wood on the fusilage, after putting the streaks on and brushing them in, I left the fusilage to dry overnight before putting the dots on and rubbing them in.

Oh boy, just finished a marathon decalling session with the Wood and Wire decals, are they fragile, you bet they are and it doesn't seem to matter what you do to them either, however I have managed to get the bottom wing finished at long last, so I hope I can progress ok from here.

Sorry about the lack of updates guys, but at the moment I'm having a little time away from modelling, things at home, which I have mentioned earlier are no better, in fact if anything, they are getting worse, but no doubt I will return in the not too distant future to bore you all with my models.

Cheers

I think you are doing a super job on the Roland, Pete, despite
engine and other problems.  Your wood effects are nothing short
of spectacular.  Wishing you the best.

Ernie
