Title: Roden 1/32 SPAD XIII - detail added
Post by: kensar on July 20, 2021, 10:09:14 PM
I am also building a SPAD like Rick, but unlike Rick's, mine will be detailed - at least as detailed as I can do it.  I believe this kit can be built into a very nice model, but it will take some work.  Typical Roden, in other words.
I had started mine a couple of weeks ago, so I am well into it.  I have just ordered a PE set from PART of Poland, which is for the SPAD VII, but there are many small fittings that can be used on the XIII.  Hopefully it will arrive without delaying this build.
I wanted a chicken on my SPAD   ::) so I have chosen to model a plane from SPA 48.  Fortunately, FFSMC makes a decal sheet that accommodates this.  I will depict Roques' plane pictured below:

(https://i.postimg.cc/8kBS255X/5fef90aa6687fd19042b41a2244f2547-aviation-art-military-aircraft.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

I started with the engine.  I will be closing up the engine so it won't be showing, but I built it without detailing just to see what it would look like.
I found that the base of the engine cylinders were too big to fit into the base at the engine block, so I remade the base of the cylinders.  Hopefully, this does not make the cylinders too tall to fit under the cowling.  If they are, some grinding will be happening.

(https://i.postimg.cc/9FmhChwm/Roden-SPAD-XIII-02.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The engine doesn't look too bad.  I also remade some of the water / oil lines as some did not fit exactly where they should have.

(https://i.postimg.cc/P5cJZFsw/Roden-SPAD-XIII-04.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/P5NNCncH/Roden-SPAD-XIII-05.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/nc3CVh3T/Roden-SPAD-XIII-08.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/02kzqw0b/Roden-SPAD-XIII-09.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

I then started on the cockpit area.

(https://i.postimg.cc/y6cfZ9CL/Roden-SPAD-XIII-10.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

Wood grain was done with the usual oil paints.

(https://i.postimg.cc/mrkXz5T9/Roden-SPAD-XIII-13.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/kG3fHMKN/Roden-SPAD-XIII-14.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/5trPwStR/Roden-SPAD-XIII-16.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

I added latches on the ammunition boxes, scratched the rudder bar pivot and put wire loops on the rudder bar.  I didn't cut out the triangular openings above the rudder bar pivot.  Just getting this made seemed like a miracle so I didn't push it.

To get the engine to fit all the down against the mounts, I had to remove the bottom oil line.  This area will be covered by the bottom of the fuse.  I also notched the wing spar.

(https://i.postimg.cc/MpVn1Z3y/Roden-SPAD-XIII-17.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

More in the next update.

Great start Ken, I love the woodwork but your detail painting is extraordinary. I do like a biplane with a chicken on the side, following with interest!

PS I had another read through your Tommy scratch build yesterday. Wow!

That is a nice start, I like the added details.
Beside Eduards American Eagles kit I have also another SPAD kit with the chicken option in my stash and have to build that marking for sure 8)

I will watch and learn!

Good to have you along, Ritchie, Alexis, and Frank.

I have a few more pictures and another watchout.

I have the engine mounted and the cockpit detailed with some oil lines and stuff.

(https://i.postimg.cc/q7GRdqxT/Roden-SPAD-XIII-21.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

One watchout is around the aluminum side pieces, 4C and 7C and the bulk head 11A.  I don't know if I assembled the side pieces incorrectly, or if there is a design flaw, but the rear edge of the side piece should be inset from edge of the bulkhead.  I assembled them flush with the bulkhead edge.  I didn't realize this until I test fitted the fuse sides.  My fix was to grind off one of the ridges that form the slot for the bulkhead.  I think this will work fine.

(https://i.postimg.cc/7ZPQGXWF/Roden-SPAD-XIII-20.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

Next I worked on the instrument shelf, shown here in progress.  I remade the instruments and control details.  I'm waiting for the PE set (for a SPAD VII) I ordered as it has a number of additional details that can be used.

(https://i.postimg.cc/vmyBjf9h/Roden-SPAD-XIII-25.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/RFV0Cmgn/Roden-SPAD-XIII-26.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

This mostly catches up to where I am, but I have started working on the fuse sides.

Till next time...

Thanks for the comments, my friends.  I may have to slow down the building pace to wait for some PE parts to arrive.  In the meantime, oil paints are drying.

I have just ordered a PE set from PART of Poland, which is for the SPAD VII
Yesterday I found the SPAD PE set from Parts in 1/48 during looking for something different in my stash - that is a wonderful collection of nice little brass parts! I hope the 1/32 set is also that nice.
I think you will have fun with it.

Cheers,
Frank

Thank you for the generous comments, everyone.  I do appreciate them and hope my work inspires others to try new things.
I have received the PART PE a week earlier than expected.  Great service from Jadar Hobbies in Poland.  I have found it has a few things I can use in the cockpit.
In the meantime, I worked a few other areas.

I have drilled some holes for engine panel cover fasteners.  These are 1/4 turn fasteners to be represented by wire, flattened on one end (not pictured).
(https://i.postimg.cc/BQgQcbvR/Roden-SPAD-XIII-27.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

I also had this crazy idea that I could improve the engine cooling slats.  I'll see how it turns out before deciding to use it or not.  I turned a round jig on the lathe to make the back ring into a circular shape.  Kit part on left.

(https://i.postimg.cc/HWbLnB1Y/Roden-SPAD-XIII-28.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

Here, I've done the base painting on the fuse innards. The base CDL is Tamiya racing white, the wood grain is oil paints.  I have added the bracing with phosphor bronze wire and brass tubes for turnbuckles.  The turnbuckles are not fixed in place yet because I am working on some PE brackets from the PARTs kit, which will affect where the turnbuckles are located.  The wood panels are decals included in the FFSMC decal sheet.  They react well with setting solution and soften very quickly with Microsol, so I will have to be very careful with that with the other decal markings.  The stringer detail on the bottom of the fuse behind the cockpit area is just scratches through the paint.

(https://i.postimg.cc/m2RgHCTQ/Roden-SPAD-XIII-29.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

Now that I have the PE, there are a number of details to work on - safety harness, compass, throttle quadrant, etc.

Thanks for following along.

Great work on details!

I also had this crazy idea that I could improve the engine cooling slats.
Are there no slats in the parts set?
I just checked my 1/48 set, and the slats are thin plate with a axle in the middle, which just have to rotated.

Cheers,
Frank

Frank, no, the PART PE did not have the cooling slats, though I expected it would.

I was just looking again at your post Ken. What size drill bit are you using on those fasteners? It must be smaller than My usual #80  8)
RAGIII
Title: Re: Roden 1/32 SPAD XIII - detail added
Post by: kensar on August 02, 2021, 09:38:56 AM
Rick, no, I used a #80 bit.  I did indent the positions with a sharp pick to get the drill bit to stay on target.  The wire fasteners are just 0.008", so they fit somewhat loosely.  I'll put them on after painting, so they will be silver colored.  Speaking of the #80 bit, I broke my HSS bit, so I need a replacement.

I'm still working on the interior details, for the most part.  I've added the compass and throttle quadrant and fixed the turnbuckles.

(https://i.postimg.cc/Mp3r74F2/Roden-SPAD-XIII-32.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

Made a seat cushion from Milliput and detailed the seat.  Belts are next.

(https://i.postimg.cc/wxDPCw7L/Roden-SPAD-XIII-31.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The cooling slats I made look good, so I'll go with them.
(https://i.postimg.cc/BnnV1sNB/Roden-SPAD-XIII-34.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

Won't be too long before the fuse gets closed up.  I've mixed up some paint for the exterior, but still not sure about the color.  Pictures of Guynemer's SPAD VII indicate it's a very yellow color.  I think a biege looks better.  The color I have mixed doesn't look like either one.

Your details are awesome Ken! You are inspiring Me to do another one of these and take a bit more care on the build. By then I am hopeful Part or Eduard will have a set for the XIII. ;D As for the color I don't remember the exact quote from the Data File but it could vary from aircraft to aircraft. Beige, yellowish egg yolk, biscuit brown etc. I always try to just be in the "Ball Park".

Thanks, EBF and Dave.  The method of using Milliput for the cushion is somewhat messy, but the results are second to none.
A PE set comparable to those that PART makes would be a nice complimentary addition (if it included engine cooling slats).

The seat cushion tutorial is in the works, but in the meantime, here are some final pictures of the interior, a lot of which will not be very visible.

(https://i.postimg.cc/rs6GkDKG/Roden-SPAD-XIII-37.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The white tabs will support the instrument shelf.  Some test fitting indicated the sides will need to be spread wider to accommodate the top and get flush sides.  May just be an issue with my model.

A couple more things to prep before the fuselage goes together.

I have put the engine covers on the fuse top.

Thanks for stopping by, Rick, Alexis, Pup, and Frank.

I filled in a few details behind the pilot's seat as it appeared they may be visible from a certain angle.  A few cross braces and the canvas bag.  The curved cross braces are wire and the canvas bag is made from styrene and covered with a paper tissue, then painted with craft acrylic paint.

Till next time.

Just a very small update.  Not much progress to show, but I've been working on different things.

I got the fuselage top on.  I filled a gap under the edge of the engine covers with 0.010" styrene.  Otherwise, it fit fairly well.

(https://i.postimg.cc/nhz3vTMX/Roden-SPAD-XIII-47.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

I've also been prepping the upper wing for painting, cutting roundel masks, and drilled some holes for the rigging.  I'm planning to use the provisions that Roden has made for the rigging, in addition to some of the PART PE pieces.

Here are some holes drilled in the rigging supports on the wings.  I have drilled 0.011" holes.  The three holes together are 0.020" apart.  I don't think this would have been possible without a mill for precise positioning.  The drill bit wanders some if the plastic surface isn't flat.

(https://i.postimg.cc/25LTt6Qm/Roden-SPAD-XIII-45.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The 2 outside holes for the flying wires and the middle one is for the landing wires.

Thanks, all.  Another short  update.

The bottom of the fuse where the fuel tank is has some detail.  Here, I've used the PART PE straps from the SPAD VII set.  Unfortunately, the VII only has 2 straps where the XIII has three.  The tank has 4 long bolts holding in place as well.  There is a drain in the sump area, too.

(https://i.postimg.cc/x1sMj1pb/Roden-SPAD-XIII-48.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

Some masking, getting ready for paint.
(https://i.postimg.cc/qvB2d3wT/Roden-SPAD-XIII-49.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

I have installed a spreader to widen the front of the fuselage sides to match the width of the cowling.  It's a bit overkill, but I used what was handy.
(https://i.postimg.cc/bN91MTQg/Roden-SPAD-XIII-50.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The bottom pan is installed.  One can see wood framework around the edges of the tank, so this area was painted brown.
(https://i.postimg.cc/vmc94wC2/Roden-SPAD-XIII-51.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The cowling set in place to check the fit.
(https://i.postimg.cc/65XdYSGT/Roden-SPAD-XIII-52.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

I haven't come up with anything special for the louvers, so they may just get some black paint on the open ends.
Thanks for following along.

I too think that fiddling to much with the louvres could be risky.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments and thoughts about the louvres.  I received more paint earlier in the week (and machine guns) and now have some base colors on the fuse and wings, along with the painted roundels.  I also have some of the Tamiya lacquer paint in the bottles.  First time using it on the machine guns.  Looks good.  Update pictures will follow soon.

Fine modeling, Ken!
As for louvres I do hope Part will produce at least so much fine PE set as they did for Spad VII. But some carefule wash will also bring them to reality, I am sure.

Hi Ken;

With regard to the three holes you drilled for the landing and flying wires to pass through the struts; are you not concerned about the weakening of the struts and the possibility that uneven stress of the rigging will cause breaking or bending of the struts? I drilled out the other rigging attachment points last night with little problem but got to worrying about following your lead on the strut holes.

Hi Jamie.  I'm not concerned at all.  The rigging lines (flying wires and landing wires) will simply pass through the holes and not be attached, at least not until after the lines are tightened up.  I use monofilament to rig with and I have never pulled any assembly apart due to the tension on the rigging.  I only put enough tension on the lines to straighten them - no more.

Here is a delicate assembly - the aileron bellcrank mounting on the lower wing.   The landing wire will be attached to the turnbuckle side and the other end is mounted at the wing strut.  These parts came from the PARTS photoetch pieces.  I'll paint this after it is attached permanently onto the lower wing.  I reinforced the vertical piece with another PE strip due to how flexible the brass is.  The turnbuckle and the strut mount are attached to the brass strip with monofilament.  The ends are heated and shrink up into a knot, trapping the parts together like a bolt.  The white specks on the wing surface are just primer overspray.

(https://i.postimg.cc/yNhrLw1y/Roden-SPAD-XIII-53.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

I have the first base color on the wings and fuselage now, along with the roundels.  A second, slightly darker color will be put on the metal panels.  Very little touch up will be required around the roundels, thankfully.  I was worried about how well the edges of the masking was sealed.

(https://i.postimg.cc/fyy2Tyx8/Roden-SPAD-XIII-56.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The black background is not the best color, so...
(https://i.postimg.cc/prS09vCR/Roden-SPAD-XIII-57.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The machine guns and the landing gear spreader bar are painted black.  I'm thinking about how to handle the covering over the spreader bar, the real ones being doped linen and stitched on.

Thanks for stopping by, everyone.  The overall color is a mix of tan, yellow, and white - more white to create the lighter color.

I have the second, darker color on the metal panels at the front of the fuselage and on the top wing.

(https://i.postimg.cc/85KsXBmZ/Roden-SPAD-XIII-59.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/DzcSLKJk/Roden-SPAD-XIII-60.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The difference in the colors looks more subtle on the fuselage than the top wing, for some reason.
A couple more metal panels to paint on the fuselage.

Thanks for stopping by, folks.  A small update - I think I have the basic colors on the fuselage now.  Next will be some decals, then some clear coats before some washes and weathering.  The decal set I have had the #7 in black, but I believe it should be red, so I made a mask using the Silhouette cutter and painted red 7s.

(https://i.postimg.cc/B6SnGmqT/Roden-SPAD-XIII-62.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/50sN980Z/Roden-SPAD-XIII-63.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

While waiting for paint to dry, I covered the landing gear axle/ spreader bar.  Photos of the real ones showed them to be doped linen that I believe was stitched on.  I CA'ed some paper over the axle and detailed with 3 strips, then painted.  It looks as rough as the real ones.

(https://i.postimg.cc/c4XPgcGJ/Roden-SPAD-XIII-69.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

And now - the decal issue.  The decal film that FFSMC used is excellent - very thin and easily positioned on the model.  Even the die cutting around the images is fine.  The printing leaves something to be desired.  It looks like an inkjet print.  The issue is that the image density it is not consistent.  The decals have quite a bit of translucence, but that's not the issue.  They look good - like they belong on the model, but of the two chicken decals, one is less transparent than the other.  The result is that the blue band around the chicken is not the same color on each side.  One side is lighter and greener than the other.  There's nothing I can do about it now, so, I'm moving ahead.

Wheels before weathering.

Thanks for the comments, guys.  There was a lot of panel fasteners.

I've tackled the landing gear, but then thought I should deal with the worrisome louvers before attaching them, as they will block access to the lower louvers.  I added white thread for the bungies and tied the lower turnbuckles in using monofilament.

A test fit.  The PE brackets add to the realism.

(https://i.postimg.cc/sxv4BBM0/Roden-SPAD-XIII-75.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

I used oil paint and a fine brush and a steady hand to paint in the openings.  Also did the perforated valve coverings.

Thanks for all the comments - much appreciated.

Yes, I chose oil paints for the louvers to have enough time to clean up the errors before the paint dries.  I started with black and mixed in some white and yellow so the color contrast would not be quite so great.

I now have the landing gear and rudder mounted and I'm putting on small details from the PART PE set before overall weathering.  I was surprised by how much the rudder really brings out the colorful nature of this paint scheme.
Many bracket fixtures on these French planes were painted blue, which is very noticeable against this overall color.  These details don't go unnoticed.

Thanks for following along.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting Alexis, William, Przemol, and Bob.

The panel fasteners are pieces of soft steel beading wire, 0.008" (0.2mm) diameter.   They are flattened on one end with pliers and then cut off in short lengths with scissors.  CA glued into the holes.  No need to paint them.

I've gotten a few more details on and prepping the struts.

The struts have a lot of detail on them.  I only hope they can be attached to the wings solidly.  There's not much of a pin on the ends and they have to go a long way down through the PE fittings.

Here I have stuck pieces of monofilament through the rigging holes while painting the blue fittings, so the paint won't block the holes.

Yes, this project is still alive!

I've been rigging and it's quite a tedious job, so I've been taking my time.  Due to how the rigging attaches to the model, I used monofilament and brass tubes for most of the turnbuckles.

I had trouble with the struts separating from the wing surfaces.  I used epoxy to attach, but that alone is not very robust.  I would suggest using styrene glue if just joining the kit pieces.  If using PE fittings between the strut and wing, like I have, I would recommend pinning the struts with wire, even if you have to drill through the wing and patch it later.  Otherwise the wing attachment is very fragile.

Here's a few in-progress shots

Not much more to go now.

Already epic build!

The blue of the fittings on the struts looks a bit bright for this very special "french field blue", but this is may be due to the pictures.
Have not found this blue yet. I do not want to mix it, as this is needed during the builds (e.g. the CSM Caudron in future) again and again.

Cheers,
Frank

Hi Frank and Dave.
The blue is bright, but not quite as bright as it shows in the pictures.  It really shows up because it contrasts with the overall yellow based color.  I'll tone it down with some weathering after I finish the rigging.  The blue is a Tamiya spray lacquer color.  I don't remember the exact color at the moment.

Wow, that looks seriously impressive Ken, so utterly realistic. I'm looking forward to seeing the rigging completed. I'm sure you are too, there does seem to be a lot of it!

Thank you, everyone for following along.  Your comments are encouraging and motivating.
I have finished the wing rigging and must say it looks very good.  There's a lot of it for a single seat fighter.  So far, the struts have accepted the rigging without riot or protest.  We'll see if everything stays in place all the way to the end.  There will be a lot of handling while adding the remaining details.
In the meantime, I have a week long family trip, so I will be taking a short break from this project.
