Greetings from Lancaster PA
« on: October 29, 2012, 11:34:47 PM »
Hello to everyone!  While I still have power as Hurricane Sandy nears, I thought it a good chance to introduce myself finally after monitoring this wondersful site for several months.  I grew up in the 1960s bulding Guillows balso kits of WWI aircraft, along with Aurora 1/48 kits.  I also built lots of  WWII aircraft.  Loved "The Blue Max" when it came out, and "Dawn Patrol" with Errol Flynn and David Niven on UHF TV stations once in a while.  My parents took me to Rhinebeck Aerodrome in 1969, and I thoroughly enjoyed DC Comcs "Enemy Ace" title.

College, law school, marrage and kids took me away from modeling for a couple of decades, then I got the O scale train bug for about 10 years. I was having coffee at the local Barnes & Noble about a year ago and picked up a modeling magazine with an article on the WNW Sopwith Pup.  I was hooked!  In the last 16 moths my stash has grown to about 40 kits, and I've built two Roden Fokker DR1s, a Special Hobbies Morane-Saulinier (modified to a IRAS Type N), a WNW Pfalz Diiia and a Roden Albatros Diii.

My photography skills are evolving, but I am not yet set up to do much photograpy beyond natural light.  The only photos I have so far are included.  This is Ltn. Hermann Becker's Fokker DR1, Touls, France, March 1918, using Rowan Broadbent's wonderful decals.  My apologies for the mediocre quality of the pix.

I really enjoy seeing other peoples' work, and learning so much.  Des, your scatchbuilds have inspired me.  I'm thinking about a scatchbuild of a Lloyd C.V in 1/32!  Carry on folks, while I weather the storm.  :)

Welcome to the forum, Bob!  You're from my neck of the woods.  I grew up in Downingtown, but lived and worked in Lititz for many years.  Good to see a fellow Pennsylvanian join us.
Gorgeous Dr.I.  Fantastic job on the streaking.  I look forward to seeing your Lloyd.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks Bud!  I've living in Lancaster for 30 years, but grew up in Newtown, Bucks County, so...always a Pennsylvanian.

Thanks for your kind words on the DR1.  I borrowed the streaking method from a modeler known as "Viking" on the Britmodeller website, although I'm sure its similar to methods used by many folks here.  It involves oil paints over a sealed acrylic base.  It merely takes a little practice, but it's really pretty easy.  The beauty is that if you don't like the way it looks when you've done a patch, you can add more color or wipe it off and start again.  The slow-drying oils are very forgiving (just keep them away from dust for a few days while drying).  I like the way it looks, but continue to experiment with it, since the photos show that each aircraft was different.

In deference to Hurricane Sandy, most of Lancaster County is closed today, including my office, so with the day off I have put the free time to good use and managed to figure out how to photograph some of my other models and upload them to the computer.  My wife jokingly questions my priorities during an impending hurricane, but what the heck!  I will post some more pix of the other aircraft soon (if we don't lose power!).

I am really enjoying modeling these great airplanes again, and find this site to be a real education and inspiration.  Take care.

Welcome aboard Bob!
All the best for the hurricane - I'm on Cape Cod so my only worry is really the tidal surge - winds are not too bad so far...gusts to only about 60mph

Bob,
Welcome to our very special place and back to the Hobby. Hope that Sandy is reasonably easy on you and all is well once she`s done her thing. Nice streaking on the DR1 and I look forward to seeing more of your work.
Cheers,

Grand work on your DRI Bob! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work. I envy you living so close to many of your country's Civil War battlefields as I have a keen interest in the Army of Northern Virginia.

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome.  I look forward to the enjoyment, inspiration and education this group offers.

We survived the hurricane much better than the Jersey coast and NYC.  Only lost power for an hour and had no water in the basement.  I used my day off well, figuring out how to get photos taken and posted here.  :)

Chris, being near the Civl War battlefields has been a lifelong influence for me.  My mother was from Gettysburg, so I grew up visiting there frequently, and ultimately went to college there.  Saw the new visitor's center last year--fantastic!  Also, Antietam is only a 2-hour drive from Lancaster.

Take care all!

Bob H

As it happens, I'm planning a trip to Gettysburg, Antietam and Harper's Ferry next fall. It'll be my first visit to any of these sites so I've laid in lots of reading material for the winter months, including battle studies, maps, and site guides so I'll be up to speed when I get there.

Cheers,

Chris

"Civl War battlefields has been a lifelong influence for me"
 Bob,
It appears we have something other than WW I modeling my friend. Being an ex history teacher the era of the Northern War of Aggression has alway been high on my favorite historical subjects. Back to the subject of modeling, that's one beautiful Fokker Dr.I . Impressive steaking.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

PS: Glad you came through Sandy well. After coming through Katrina here in 2005 I have much empathy for those suffering in the aftermath of Sandy.
