Hobby Craft 1/32 Nie 17 Russian Markings

Greetings all:

I finally finished this.  It was for a GB on Aeroscale, but I didn't get it done in time.  I posted pics there as well.  It didn't turn out to my likeing, I didn't take care of problems when they arose figuring the rigging would take care of it, it didn't.  Anyway, it is done, finally got the motivation to finish it.  I also tried a little weathering.  I usually don't weather my models, but this one was a good candidate for it.







The model represents one piloted by Boris of the 19 KAO located in Galicia.  The markings are of the order of St. George.  Apparently Boris' nickname was "Bob" which is written on the fuselage sides.  It is an intersting addition to the growing collection of the usual cross and cockades.  If I ever build another one of these, I will pay closer attention to the wing, fuselage, alignment and get the aftermarket interior pieces for it.

    I like it! Your weathering on the silver/aluminum finish is really well done, subtle but effective. Can you tell us more about how you did it? I have a silbergrau Pfalz DIIIa in the line up and would appreciate some thoughts on weathering the metallic monotone finish.

Thanks Gregory:  The arrival of an early spring and promise of an early riding season, caused me to let fit problems go.  The lower wings should have been aligned better.  I figured rigging would take care of it, but alas it didn't.  I am still fairly pleased with it; in retrospect.

@ Lance:  I used a real thin wash of those Winton Oils and terpanoid: I used a mixture of black and raw umber and just played with it.  I used a about a 3/8 wide brush and wiped off most of the material and then brushed it one in one way strokes.  If it got a little heavy I used a cotton swab, or cotton bud, wiped it off and did it again.  With this model I wasn't real concerned about over weathering, but I saw someone do one of these and weathered it and it broke up the silver nicely so I thought I would give it a try.  What the heck?
Anway, glad you like it, and thanks for the kind words.  Now on to a resurection of my melted WNW SE5a.

All I can say Mark is that I'd be proud of it if it was my model. The weathering is both subtle and realistic looking, the prop and strut woodwork looks good and the marking scheme is unusual and attractive. It's a winner in my book!

Hi Mark.  I really like the job you've done on this subject!  I have this kit on the shelf, and you've whetted my appetite to get to it sooner rather than later.    I find the Russian Air Service aircraft to be very interesting, and plan to model a variety of Russian Nieuports in 1/32.  So many projects, so little time!
