Internal rigging...got any tips?
« on: May 04, 2018, 09:38:09 AM »
HI everyone,
Another first for me:  Interior control rigging.  I need to attach six lines to my stalky-ish Albatros control column as well as rudder pedal controls that seem to go to two fuselage mounted pulleys on the interior.

I will probably use EZ line for these interior though I also have some fine fishing line.

Anybody got any tips before I destroy something?

Thanks,

Gaz

 Gaz,
I'd go with the thinnest material I could find. As a general rule I use invisible sewing thread for most of my rigging. The thread is  available here in both clear and smoke colors. I do once in a while use EZ Line or Aeroclub's rigging thread ,but only for the exterior . I won't use it internally because I tend to pull it too tight, sending rudder bar and stick off into space in a snap.
Highest Regards,

Thank you for that, Gregory!  That is something definitely to consider.

Gaz,
I've settled on a combination of Modelkasten and EZ Line for internal lines, I find fishing line exerts too much pressure on the tiny components when tensioned. Both take paint well, I use Mr. Metal Color "Stainless".

RB,

I thought foul language was a normal part of model building.  At least it is for nearly every modelling step I perform - some steps it gets more foul than others. ;D

I used EZ Line Fine size on my WNW Taube and though it's rectangular in cross section, looks good when installed.  BTW, contrary to what someone else stated, the Uschi rigging thread is not round.  It too is flat.  At least the stuff I used on a 1/48 Eduard SE.5a was.

Guys,
Thank you for your helpful replies and inspirational pictures.  IN the end I went with Stren 2lb. test and found it worked well enough for the first time around.   I have EZline, but it is white and I find that it looks good to my naked eye, but when photographed, the twists show up very well.

And it sticks with CA?

For the interior rigging, I usually use stretched sprue. Color it with a silver sharpie.

Me too. It's easy to attach and for rudder control wires you can just cut it once it disappears behind a bulkhead. You can also stretch it to differing thicknesses. Probably won't help you win competitions but looks pretty good to me....

I pull it through a paintbrush filled with a mix of black and aluminium acrylic to colour it, but a Sharpie would wok as well.

I am another one that uses the "Old School" method of Stretched Sprue. I tried using fishing line on one of my DVIIs and the tension warped the frame. Cut it away and went back to sprue.  :-[

Thanks for the replies, guys!  I may try sprue inside for a future build.  ON this D.V I'm doing, I'm tempted to snip the aileron cables I've glued and just use four short pieces that will just dangle inside the fuselage...  But all things being new here...  I'll try to do it right, first.

All tips greatly appreciated.

Here is EZ line connected to to rudder pedals. It si a bit ribbon like, but pulled tight it looks ok to me.
