Show us your Avro 504
« on: March 25, 2018, 10:15:39 AM »
Hi all, I did not see a thread for the Avro in here so here is my 1:48 Smer Avro 504K to start it off. It's a representation of the Avro 504K flown at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome from the 1970's through 2005 I believe, when it suffered an engine failure. It was built by Vivian Bellamy for a film that was never made, and was then sold to the Aerodrome. It was powered by a 110hp Le Rhone 9J, and sadly it was always a poor running example, never being able to quite reach 1200 RPM. After its first unscheduled landing, it was rebuilt and returned to the air in 2009, retaining its same eye-catching scheme. Unfortunately, one month later it suffered yet another failure when an ignition wire came loose and shorted out the remaining 8. It is being rebuilt yet again.

I always found this Avro to be very visually appealing, so I undertook my first foray into making my own decals for the wheel covers, tail, and side panels. the sizing went well, but my printer was not as clear as I would have liked. Micro Scale aftermarket checkerboard took care of the sides despite being extremely fragile, and the stripes on the fuselage were hand painted. The engine is from Small Stuff Models.

Lovely model Ian. An interesting story behind the model for sure.

Thank you gentlemen! As I get braver with rigging, I may return to this one and finish it off. For now, happy with the way it stands.

Scratchbuilt 1/32 Avro 504

Reached back to bring this thread up to the front.

My scratchbuilt Avro 504 in 1/32 scale.  This represents the aircraft that is credited with the first RFC air to air victory in August 1914.
I am adding a few different pics from those in the completed thread.

I hope Roden follows through and releases more Avro 504s.  Thanks for looking.
