Sopwith 5F.1 Dolphin - 23 Sqn - JW Pearson (1/32, Wingnut Wings)
« on: February 27, 2018, 06:26:25 AM »
This model is dedicated to my good friend - Bud Pearson, built in honour of his grand-uncle who flew this aircraft almost 100 years ago!
To you, my dear friend!!!

I must confess, that I am quite happy to have this one completed. But there is also a bitter taste to it. I am still unable to believe, that down there in Australia there is a Dolphin kit which build was tragically stopped and Des will never finish his masterpiece... Blue skies, Des...

Another simply exceptional Build Przemol! You've done a spectacular job on this and it's a fitting tribute to Bud's Uncle and to Des.

Great locking Dolphin, invites me to start my 48 soon.

One question regarding the Vickers: Are you sure about painting the Vickers? I have some doubt, for several reasons:
- they get hot during usage, so this will destroy the painting
- a layer of paint will disturb the cooling by isolation, that's why weapon typically only gets a chemical burnishing
- all pictures e.g. in Hendon, show black Vickers; all the old b/w pictures this metallic shine

Of course this is your decision - just wondering :)

Cheers,
Frank

Thank you very much, everyone. Your welcome to this gallery is overwhelming...

Frank, as I have already commented in the build log, I had originally painted the cooling jackets in the usual GunMetal. But Buzby rightly pointed out that WNW calls for Battleship Grey. I totally agree with your arguments against the painted jackets but I have checked my documentation and indeed, in the Cross and Cockade monograph there are some period photos of Dolphins with top engine cowling removed where there is clearly a difference in colours of rear gun part and the cooling jackets, the latter being evidently brighter. So the grey seems to be well documented there.
