5 Color Handpainted Polygonal Night Camo Masks.
« on: February 05, 2018, 02:36:50 AM »
Here are some pics of a night camo mask set for my Gotha.
Fuse and wing masks are worked out , hoping for opinions.
Full wing drawn on paper to check:

Drawn on paper for fuse check:

Mask produced and checking:

Practise mask applied:

Mask material is low tack signwork vinyl. Numbers are printed and the mask is then cut. I'm looking for comments on procedural pitfalls that I may not be able to see.
Thank you.

Wow!

It looks better than hand painting those Revell decals in 1:72

Hmmm.
Not sure what you mean...
I have heard of this type of camo decals being painted over with more 'correct' colors , but at 900+ shapes in 1/72 would be a  colossal pita.
These are in 1/32 scale.

Some of the early 1:72 Revell kits, I'm remembering the D.VII come with a large decal that is white and carries the pattern for the lozenge in black. The modeller has to paint in the lozenge by hand. Let's say it's a bit challenging...

Your mask looks very promising, I like the numbers for the colours

Richard ; Thank you and yes it looks very challenging!
Manni; Thank you.

I guess I'll go with it the way it is.
The procedure isn't as daunting as I thought.
One color will be done with the first coat of paint. Full masks applied.
Masks removed for color #2 , paint shot , masks back on. If the removed masks are laid out carefully , they will be easy to replace.
Masks removed for color #3 , replaced.
Masks removed for color #4 , replaced
Masks removed for color #5 , no need to replace as the job is done.
Diligent mask replacement and careful paint work will be key to reducing the cleanup after alla the paint is applied.
Some colors to have differing flat or satin clears as I go through the work.
I think it will be a long 8 hour day with an hour between paint applications , as with all paint work , proper preparation is vital.
I'll need to seal the fuse up and prep for the gloss black front section and lower wing center section as these were varnished plywood on many of these bombers.

Could you make a paper print of the numbered mask, laminate it and use that to park the removed mask bits on when painting?

Richard ;
No the mask shapes when removed would still be adhesive on the back. They would attach to the paper or laminate. The masks come on a carrier sheet , that would be placed adjacent to the masked parts and the shapes laid out neatly , ready to re-apply.
They will be laid onto a piece of the vinyl's carrier sheet which is glossy and kinda waxy feeling . The shapes can then be replaced after each color application.
I hope you can see that , the same as your idea but with the carrier sheet. All of the shapes are different ,ALL OF THEM! So replacement will be a slog but they can only be re-applied one way.

That's why I suggested laminating the paper copy.

I suppose that would work as well, but after removing the masks there is a perfectly good carrier sheet for the shapes.
As I do this I'll show the steps, should be fun!
I'll keep your suggestion in mind, if others want the masks that would be a way to supply a 'map' of the layout, good thinking!
