Sopwith 5F.1 Dolphin - JW Pearson (1/32, Wingnut Wings)
« on: January 24, 2018, 07:56:59 AM »
My second Christmas gift landed on the workbench two weeks ago, just after the Arma Hobby Fokker E.V. Here I plan to build the kit option C - the aircraft flown by JW Pearson in 23 Sqn. I wish to dedicate this build to my dear modeller friend - Bud Pearson, and to his grand-uncle - the pilot of this aircraft.

Tonight I have basically completed the preparation of cockpit interior bits for the assembly. I decided to remove the bottom rigging imitation and remade it in the form identical to the sides rigging. I also plan to run all the control lines to the tail all the way through the fuselage. I have also equipped those lines with 1/48 Gaspatch turnbuckles. The main fuel tank was enhanced with the holding bands. I also worked a bit on the engine, for a moment the electric wires are added but they still have to be arranged on the engine blocks in a more tidy way. Other than this it is all from the box. I have to tell after builiding almost all (with the exception of Pup) Sopwith kits from WNW that this one has surely the most packed and the most complex interior. Many interconnected elements, absolutely not the easiest one to get together. I hope it will all click on correctly.

Your usual magnificent start, my friend!  I am truly honored that you have chosen to build my great uncle's plane.  I'm looking forward to following along.
Cheers,
Bud

Yes, me too Amigo as Prze is beating me to the punch on this one ! As I believe I told you this was my choice ( 2002 when the Osprey book came out) long before us meeting.

As always I agree with my Amigo Ed! Beautiful start. The engine and interior rigging is awesome!

Nice one Prze,

I’m hoping to finish mine off in the next few days  ;D

I’m in serious need of a master class on ignition wiring... what’s your technique?

Thank you for the kind words.

Guy, I am no master, there are more subtle ways to do the ignition wiring than mine. But if you like my method - it uses a thin (0.25mm) soldering wire - easy to bend, cut and glue with CA. Cut the measured lengths with some excess, glue one end into a hole drilled in magneto, paint to the desired colour (I hear there were multitudes of possibilities), bend glue to the spark plug and when glue is set - cut the excess with sharp razor blade. One could add some additional elements like holding rings or other fittings. Des had shown it finely in his parallel Dolphin build. I decided to skip this part, as in the matter of fact even without the top cowling such subtleties will not be visible in this model.

Some photos of the interior before closing the fuselage and its bottom together with the lower wing

and just after it

The seams have to be cleaned, partly filled and sanded.

And here is the remainder of the model elements cut from frames and awaiting cleaning
