Tamiya Varnish

In 'Stringbag' the authors refer to Tamiya varnish in gloss, semi-gloss and matt.  In the US, we only get the acrylic paints and the spray lacquers.  I know that Tamiya has enamel but does not import this.

Are the authors referring to the acrylic clear coats or another product?

Since they're using a lot of oil and enamel paints after the glosscoats, I'm 99% sure they're using the acrylic one to prevent those (sometimes heaviliy thinned) layers reacting with the paint coats below. At least I do and I don't have any issues putting oils en/or enamel over that once fully cured.
