Sopwith Snipe - WnW
« on: November 08, 2017, 03:01:24 PM »
Hello all,
Wow, a long time between completions for me!
I started this kit when it first came out in 2012 and then got distracted (sci fi models mostly, and a model railway, and some figures...anyway..)
This was a really satisfying build and naturally after completing it, I went and bought WnW's Sopwith Camel.
Then I accidently won another Camel as the local modelling show - good problem to have right?

Anyway - here it is - should be no more than five years before I finish my next aircraft model - plenty of sci fi and other things until then!
This particular model is of a 4SQN AFC snipe that I believe was involved in the very last combat action of the war for 4SQN. Here it is receiving some attention from a dutiful fitter who is, in turn, receiving some unwanted attention from the pilot...the fitter appears to be smiling patiently.

The figures are a pair from Model Cellar who are producing my favourite figures of the period. I just had to add a slouch hat.

Cheers,
Carpo

Saw it already in WNW site. Very fine Snipe, Carpo!
May I ask, how did you do that peeled off linen. And, if possible, I would like to see a close up of that zone to see how deep you got into the internal structure - or maybe you have some WIP shots?
All in all - great model, great scene. Congratulations. And nevermind 5 years :)

Hey PrzemoL,
How have you been?
Love some of the work you have been doing - watching your Camel build.

Here are a couple of pictures that show the insides.
There was quite a bit of work to do building up the internal stringers and other details.
As for the fabric, I cut a triangle out of the fuselage (a scary task that once started, there is no turning back!)
The stringers on this half of the fuselage were quite tricky,
Then I glued a triangle of lead foil which has a fine fold along the upper edge which was then draped and folded aroung the trailing edge of the wing.
The bleed through of the cockade is done with pastel chalk. Not sure if this was evident on real aircraft or not but it seemed like a good idea and adds visual interest. I added some lines to represent chafing of the stringers or at least what might be creases in the fabric that would remain after the material was folded back.

I hope that makes sense.
Cheers.

Yes, it has been long 5 years since we met in Melbourne... Great that we can still be in touch via this forum.

Thanks for your kind word on my models.

And many thanks for the thorough and clear explanation of your steps with Snipe. Very fine work with spectacular results.
I doubt the cockade would show through PC 10 on the linen inside, too. But I agree, this adds a lot to spectacularity, too :-) And those stringer marks, wow! Very well done.

This is a truly remarkable model, Paul!  As others have said, well worth the 5 year wait.  I've seen a lot of your models over the years and in my opinion this is your best yet and the best Snipe I've ever seen.  What a joy to behold!
Cheers,
Bud

That is a masterpiece. I would be willing to wait another 5 years before I see another one like that!

Hello all,
Thanks for the kind words. Here are the last few images that I think will help explain what I did with the interior. The frames (white styrene) and stringers (black stretched sprue) are easier to see before they were painted.

For the seat belt, I annealed the photo etch which really helps it take on the nice bends required to get it to drape naturally over the seat.

Thanks again,
Carpo

Beautifully done Paul, the Snipe looks superb and the peeled back linen is a great touch and well done, you have also done a brilliant job with your figure painting, you have created a really nice scene.
