Where to start...?
« on: October 24, 2017, 01:36:58 AM »
Well I suppose near the beginning ...., but sticking to the highlights...

Late September, I went to the doctor’s surgery in some discomfort with my back (and an inability to move sideways or forwards on my modelling chair). The first course of treatment did nothing to reduce pain which intensified significantly. Further medication upped the ante to include pain killers containing opium, and stuff to help prevent the constipation which could develop as a side effect. An X ray was booked and physiotherapy also arranged, though not immediately.

Within about a week or so I was admitted to accident and emergency at a local hospital. Not only was my back ireally bad, but after numerous tests etc and various failed attempts, they removed a significant intestinal blockage which was causing much abdomnal pain. Nothing was done at that stage about my back.

Time for some physiotherapy. Well, actually I lasted two sessions. In the last ten minutes of the second, I was reduced to such agony that I had to be carried off the treatment table and helped to stand before Ena got me home.

And on then to another big day. First an X ray and then back to the doctor with the results; getting to these places was a trial. The X ray showed some degenerative osteo-arthritis.  Given  the continuing severe pain, the doctor moved on from the opium to painkillers containng morphine, as well as anti-inflammatory tablets and other bits and pieces. He also arranged an appointment with a consultant rheumatologist at another hospital asap.

Well we’ve just got back from the specialist. Yes there is a lot of osteo-arhtritis, but the search is on to explain better  the severe, continuing pain and so I will be admitted to the second, nicer hospital for about five days next Sunday, to have an MRI scan and other tests to try and focus any treatment.. One of the intersting questions I was asked was how and when I had broken a bone in the mid spinal column. Even having played rugby till I was 40, I’m dammed if I know

Oh yes, and my back remains very panful.

As to my lovely little Caudron, I hope you understand the lack of further progress reports for the time being

Best wishes
Nigel

Dear James, Lance, Juan and eindekker, You are such good forum friends and thank you for your kind and supportive words.

You are so right Lance about our advancing years. I just hadn’t expected it to become manifest in this way. The specialist consultant did reassure me that, once they can be certain about the precise additional causes, the pain will be managed and, reduced. Fingers crossed eh?

I don’t know, one day I’m worrying about how best to start some rigging ....

Best wishes
Nigel.

Wishing you all the best. I hope they can do something for you. Long term pain sucks. Unfortunately I understand what you're going through having degenerative disk disease  in my neck and lower back. Pills have made life easier kind of. Again wishing you a speedy recovery

Nigel... I sympathise and empathise with you and I'm sure many others here suffering the health issues that come with age are also sending you the very best wishes for a full recovery to good health. Like you I'm blighted with osteo arthritis, diabetes including diabetic nerve damage to my hands which severely impacts on modelling abilities and sundry other medical conditions from minor to serious.

I use glucosamine tablets for joint care which work pretty well. Those and a pharmacy load of pills and insulin etc keep the worst ravages at bay but having suffered chronic back pain and other back issues over the years I really feel for you.

Its a very sad reality for too many of us that our enthusiasm for our hobby is undermined by health issues which severely impact on our ability to enjoy it. Wishing you the very best for a speedy recovery.

Dear Dave, Manni, James, Sandy, Ian, boggie and Des,

When I first joined this forum, I did so with some trepidation, never having having engaged like this or shared images of aircraft models before. What I did not expect was to find such a community of people I’m proud to call forum friends. My current predicament has really brought this home to me.

So thank you all for your support, understanding and even in some cases direct empathy in terms of pain sufferance. I wish all those facing their own particular challenges well. My thoughts are with you too.

Best wishes
Nigel
