Well, in a sense. Another screed I've written that might prove interesting...

True, there can be a lot of angst generated around this. My intent isn't to berate or convert anyone, merely an exploration of what happened to me. I guess I'm in my recovery period.

Wise words well written. I reached that stage some time ago - and have enjoyed my hobby all the more for doing so.

Stephen.

I also reached the same conclusion years ago! I will never be a Des, Bo, Bud, Justin, etc. I represent the average Modeler and am quite happy in that position! That doesn't mean I don't strive to improve but I do Accept my limitations and move on...Happily.

That is why I never post pictures at all. I build these models for me and don't care if anyone else ever looks at them. It always surprises me when guests actually look at the 100 odd models in my living room. I do this for fun and like Rick says, I try to get better but am sure I will never rise to the level of many of the builders here. I really appreciate their skills and willingness to share. I am in awe of people like Bo, but feel no need to compete with them.

I like these forums for the discussion and the support as well as the information I can glean. I only object when people get too pedantic. You know, the guy who says, "That is wrong because I am an expert." Real expertise is demonstrated not announced. If you think something is wrong show me how it is wrong with a source or a picture, not by insulting the model, model builder or manufacturer.

That is a good article!

It can become madness and expensive at that.

I model for the meditation of focus about something that is just an object to made - x number of parts to be turned into one. I'm happy to get it somewhat right and if I buy a good model I'll let the makers of it get it mostly right. I don't give a cuss about the product at the end - though I quite like it hanging around to remind me that I finished it. On another forum, I was challenged about the angle of my canon barrels through the gun ports on a 18th C ship. What the hell - they're on wheels - the crew angled them, not me?! The argument continued in my thread for a week. Get over it, build a bridge, life's too short, who cares and those that seem to care too much don't have to live with my injustice to the "supposed" actual thing. And those who actually care that much should seriously consider what having a hobby like this is worth - it must be so tormenting for them! Torment ain't my plan. Frustration at times, sure, but fun almost all the time.

Model making is for myself - I want to make them more accomplished for myself, not for anyone else, and I do not care a toss if there are better out there than me at this - there always will be and I like looking at their work.

Cheers
Alistair

I'm your average modeler, but I do strive to improve and develop new and interesting ways of solving problems. I'm not interested in winning badges, medals or trinkets - I do this for me and for my love of all those brave souls who climbed into cockpits never to return. The history is as important as the plastic.

Yes. I'd venture that without that history there would be no plastic.
