"Found it!" Caudron GIV 1/72 scratch built
« on: November 28, 2016, 06:55:45 AM »
Evening All,

This is my contribution to the Diorama GB: more of a scratch build than a dio but this is my first attempt to present figures in any scale. The figures were from WD Models RFC set 10 and the engine is from Small Stuff - I cannot recommend it too highly but I did need an eye loupe and lots of patience to assemble it. It is a little gem - I just wish that my painting could do it more justice.

The Caudron GIV was derived from the earlier GIII version of 1913 which had a single engine on the front of the fuselage nacelle: the aircraft was a two seater so the observer could see very little. The wings were extended and two engines fitted to improve performance and to enable the observer to handle a machine gun for defence and allowed him to see through a clear panel under the nose: this design entered service in 1915 and was used by the French, Italian, RNAS and Russian air services. They were used for photographic reconnaissance and bombing: over 2500 machines were built and it saw front line service on the western and other fronts until 1918. The model represents a machine which was equipped as a bomber from No 5 Wing RNAS, Coudekerque, France in the spring of 1916. French built machines had 110hp Le Rhone engines whereas British built machines were powered by Anzani radials: this particular machine was constructed in France. Some images do not have the figures because they were not quite ready when I took the pictures.

Thanks for looking.

Stephen.

An exceptional result Stephen, hard to believe that this is only 1:72 scale, this would have to be your best effort yet, congratulations.

Dear Stephen, this is one of the best Caudrons I have ever seen in my life in any scale, and ... this is scratchbuilt -- simply amazing! WOW!!!

If someone will ask me about the spirit of modelling, I will show him your WIP and this thread. Wonderfull!
A model thrives on its overall impression and not on that every little disagreement over the original is hyped up as a disaster
