Just introducing myself
« on: September 02, 2012, 03:48:46 AM »
Hello everybody,
My name is Alex, I’m in my fifties and I live in Northamptonshire, England, not far from an airfield called Sywell Aerodrome.  I’ve loved aeroplanes ever since I can remember, and still do.  After being introduced to Airfix models at a very early age, I stumbled by chance across Revell’s 1:72 series of WW1 aircraft tucked away at the back of a dark and gloomy shop: it was love at first sight!  I didn’t know which to buy first: they all looked so fabulous and exotic, I wanted them all!  I eventually did buy the whole set, and added models to it from other manufacturers to make what at the time was an impressive collection for a kid (I was 14 by then!).
Unfortunately soon afterwards I had to get rid of the whole lot because we emigrated.  I then finished school, went to University, got married, commuted to London, had kids etc etc and here we are!  In all that time, I never lost interest in aircraft, and my passion for the WW1 ones never diminished.  Business was going well, and because I live not far from an airfield, I felt I had to find out what it was like to actually fly! The closest thing available to a WW1 machine was a Tiger Moth so I arranged a trial flight in one.  It was not only one of the best experiences of my life, but one that I didn’t want to end, so I went and got a pilot’s licence.  During the lessons I found that it was the actual flying that I enjoyed, so I progressed to aerobatics and eventually bought a Russian Yak52.  This was the closest thing I could affordably get to a warbird, and I flew it whenever I could (and weather allowed).
Unfortunately, the plane was eventually scrapped due to a crash landing (not by me, thankfully!), so I’m not actively involved with planes any more.  However, despite having loads of books on the subject, I was wandering about the internet looking for something or other and came across your website.  All I can say is “Wow!”  The quality and standard of work displayed by you guys is breathtaking.  I never was, and am not, in the same league.  However, my appreciation and understanding of your abilities, your dedication, crafstmanship and sheer artistry is immense. I suppose it’s a bit like enjoying playing snooker and being happy to pot a red and a colour, and then suddenly finding yourself among the pros!  I’m not in that league, never was and never will be, but I’m happy just to watch how the experts do it, and feel privileged to be amongst you.  So I’m afraid I won’t really be able to contribute anything regarding model building, but would love to just be part of the community and be involved in what you do, if only as an admiring fan - I hope that’s OK.

Welcome to the forum, Alex.  So glad you found us.  Three years ago, I was a rank amature, having been away from modeling for over 20 years.  At best, I was always a medeocre assembler of kits.  Then I found the Aerodrome, where I met Des, Jamo and many of the other members of this site.  I've learned so much from these guys and I'm truly grateful to them all.  Don't be afraid to post your work.  You'll get lots of fantastic advice from a great bunch of kind and generous folks and you'll see your skills develope by leaps and bounds.
Cheers,
Bud

Hello Alex and welcome to the forum, it is such a pleasure to have you here. Like Bud has said, don't be afraid to show us your work, we are a very friendly group of people and we are all willing to share our experience, any questions you have just simply ask, you will get very quick answers. I'm in a similar position as Bud, I only returned to modeleing about three years ago after a very long break, I had never built WW1 model aircraft but decided that this is what I was going to dedicate my time to, I have learnt so much in the very short three years. It was only April of this year when I decided to establish this forum and it has gone ahead in leaps and bounds since then, it is a great place for like minded modelers to share their interests.

I also am an ex flyer, I took flying lessons when I was only sixteen and had my pilots licence at seventeen, I was flying aeroplanes before I had my drivers licence, my dad used to drive me to the airport so I could do my flying lessons.

Looking forward to seeing your work posted here, or just browse around and read the many very interesting topics, please enjoy.

Hi Des and Bud
Thanks very much for your kind words.  I must admit that now that there are so many models, accessories, tools and materials so easily available on the internet (in comparison to when I used to make models) that I'm very tempted to get back into it, especially when I see what the modellers on this site are achieving - it's all very inspiring.  Not having built models for some time now, do you think it would be easier to start with something small scale or something larger?  My own (remote) memory is that I found 1:48 and 1:32 kind of easier, as it wasn't so fiddly.  What do you think?

Deciding which scale to build would be entirely up to your own abilities, age, eyesight and what you are comfortable working with. I prefer 1:32 scale due mainly to the amount of detail which is included with the kit plus the amount of detail which can be added with after market accessories. I have seen some brilliant 1:72 and 1:48 scale builds and a lot of credit goes to those modelers who have the ability to work in the smaller scales, but for me 1:32 scale is perfect. Another factor to take into consideration would be the size of the completed models and the amount of display area you have, naturally a 1:32 scale two seat bi-plane will take up a lot more space compared to a 1:72 scale same style aeroplane, then there is the cost factor. The smaller kits cost a lot less, say $10 compared to anything from $40 to $100 for a good 1:32 scale kit, even more for limited run models. The variety of kits and availability would be another thing to look at, the 1:72 and 1:48 kits have been around for a long time and are catered for by many manufacturers with hundreds of kits available, the 1:32 scale kits are a little light on but with the advent of Wingnut Wings this scale is increasing in range and popularity very quickly, Roden has a great selection of 1:32 WW1 aircraft kits.

I probably have not answered your question very clearly but I think it all boils down to your own personal preference, if you feel comfortable building 1:72 scale then go for it, if 1:32 scale is more to your liking well that will be your choice, what ever you decide to build there is only one thing to remember, have fun doing it and enjoy the experience.

Hello and welcome aboard my friend. Glad to have you with us,you'll find this a very friendly and informative forum. So never be afraid to ask questions. I would suggest a project in 1/32 scale for your return. There are several great kits available in this scale that the construction is pretty straight forward like the Academy Nieuport 17 or Sopwith Camel and Hobbycrafts SPAD XIII. They are nothing too difficult to build into excellent models straight out of the box. Later on you can move up to Wingnut Wings or Roden kits when you feel your skill and craftsmanship are up to the task. Not that WNW or Roden kits are difficult but rather more involved than the Academy or Hoobycraft kits. Please do share your progress with us my friend.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Thanks for the information Des, it's much appreciated.  Likewise Gregory for advice on manufacturers.  I can see some enjoyable hours ahead of me browsing what they and the others have got.  Meanwhile, I've posted something in the Painting/Drawing section which I hope you'll like. The resolution doesn't do justice to the detail in the originals because of limitations on size, but I'll see if I can get some better quality images uploaded or linked somehow.  With that, I think I'd better sign off now: I didn't realise it was so late - it's 2 in the morning here! Time flies etc...............
All the best to you all

You sound much like myself Alex. I'm a plain cook when it comes to model building but the group of modellers here are the most helpful I've ever happened upon. There's a place here for modellers of all skill levels and that's what makes it so comfortable, so don't hesitate to jump right in.

Cheers,

Chris

Alex,

First, WELCOME!  Second, do build and submit something. I only returned to serious modelling a bit over two years ago, and the amount and quality of help I've got here and on another similar site is truly remarkable. Like you I was an ardent modeller at an early age, went on to the real thing as a professional pilot, and now am more or less retired and really enjoying the freedom I have to indulge in WWI Aviation History and Modelling.
Folks here are most helpful and accomodating, no question goes unanswered, and above all we have fun. Looking forward to your participation.
Cheers,
Lance

Welcome aboard Alex.
It seems so many of us have common roots: Models built as kids sparking an interest in aviation and then back to modelling! Myself included: after a bedroom full of kits hanging from every available space on my bedroom ceiling, to professional pilot in the US, and back to modelling - I'm still flying and got back into models about 18 months ago. So much has changed, so much to learn, but...now there's the internet and sites like this! My skills have improved dramatically and with the tips and advice available here I hope they will continue to do so. I look forward to seeing some of your work - don't worry what you think of it, the tips and advice for improvements will flow....
