work in progress: back deck

I decided to rejuvenate the back deck during the Queen's B'day long w/e. Unfortunately it has taken a lot longer than I expected. Was just going to sand down and revarnish, though noticed a number of planks were rotten on the edge of the deck, which I have had to remove (seven in total, the photo just showing the start).

They were a real chore to get out without damaging the surrounding planks as they are tongue and groove, which required a bit of chisel work. Also bought myself a new router after foolishly thinking a dremel would do the job...just hope I haven't burnt out the motor!

Not sure what the original species of wood the deck was made from, but replacing with either turpentine (if I can get another few planks from the local timber yard) or spotted gum.

Will post some more photos when the deck is finished, which hopefully will be next w/e (unlike my modelling projects, I don't think SWMBO will let this one go half finished too long!

I know the feeling Jim, one of those 5 minute jobs that turns into a week long epic, you're doing a great job though.

Jim, every home project takes longer than we think it will.

So after a fair amount of rain in the morning I was able to finish putting the new planks in (seven went to eight after noticing more rot had set in the groove of a neighbouring plank. Hoping the replaced planks don't stick out after sanding, but if they do I'll use a dark stain and hope for the best.

More heavy rain forecast tomorrow, but hoping it will ease off enough for me to start sanding.

My next project after this will be to find an old drop down writing desk I can repurpose for modelling so the kids can't get into anything!

     I have a work bench set up with a modified "roll-top" desk (the Canuck term for a "drop-down I believe) and it works well, makes the Grand Kid's visits a bit less frightening! I can share some thoughts/photos with you if you wish.........let me know with a PM if I can share some useful hints.

Progress update on deck...man, I'm kicking myself that I didn't hire a floor sander instead of doing it all with a belt sander - it sure is hard on the knees and takes a lot longer than I expected! However, just one more edge to go now before all the stain is gone, then I'll do a light sand with a higher grit before staining...still deciding on the colour.



Unfortunately, I found two more planks that I'll need to replace due to rot setting in, but things are looking hopeful to a finish date tomorrow arvo. Then, on to my hobby desk project!

But a belt sander on a job that big?  I've done that too so I feel your pain. Though only once!
Guess we learn by our experiences 
However, I see all your effort has resulted in great success and was therefore worth it.
And knees will recover in time, usually.   

So what about the protective covering? I assume SWMBO would not be a fan of PC number 10 with a nice big
roundel in the centre.

How bout I post a couple of painting preferences (including PC10) and run a poll on it? Unlike the Brexit vote, I think I know what the result will be and its not gonna be a good outcome (at least for me when my wife sees it!).

Not that I'm saying the Brexit result was a good (or bad) outcome, mind! I'm not a UK or European citizen, so it's not right for me to express an opinion on the matter, either way (though my wife's sister, who is a UK citizen, is devastated!)...
