Two WnW Pfalz models progress
« on: May 24, 2016, 12:00:46 AM »
Hi Folks, I've had a couple of WnW Pfalz models under construction for a while and thought I'd post a couple progress pics for interest. The DIIIa is one that I'd ordered the extra decal sheet for years ago, and would be the wartime scheme of the model Bertl Skorpil crafted so beautifully and described on this site. The DXII will be scheme "A" from the instructions sheet with the old style tail and blue nose, tail, and wheel covers.

I've used Aviattic's cookie-cutter 5 colour lozenge decal sheet for the DIIIa, and the DXII had to be hand made using the faded lozenge, The comparison photo of the top wings shows a nice colour variation between them. There's also a comparison photo of the lozenge decal provided by WnW. I much prefer the look of the Aviattic product in this case.

Hope to have these kits completed soon, but am in no rush and enjoying every moment of the builds. Except for perhaps the rib tapes  ;)

Cheers,
Gary

Both are gorgeous! Your black fuselage is extremely well done! Perfect application of the lozenge. I am Impressed to say the least!

Nice work!  The lozenge and the paintwork is first rate!
I shall never forget my admiration for that German pilot, who single handed, fought seven of us for ten minutes. I saw him go into a fairly steep dive and so I continued to watch, and then saw the triplane hit the ground and disappear into a thousand fragments...James McCudden

What a great double build, Gary!  The DIIIa has a gorgeous colour scheme and
the D.XII's engine is just superb...the extra piping and magneto wiring is a real
bonus to an already beautiful machine.  I don't know how you are managing a
"2fer", but you are doing a terrific job and I am looking forward to more updates,
my friend. :D

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Rick, Kreston and Ernie - thanks for your encouraging words. Glad you like the builds so far. The 2-fer that you referred to Ernie was actually a 3-fer when I started the Eindecker, but it helps to have a few things on the go so that progress can be made while one sub-assembly waits for paint/decals/glue to dry. With these two progressing well it's time to break open another from the stash...just not decided which one yet  8)
Cheers,
Gary

Gary,
Both are looking mighty fine! Your all black weathered scheme is really well done, just enough chipping and wear to look well used but not overdone. By coincidence I'm starting to cut lozenge for my D.XII today as well, and looking forward to using the faded Aviattic too, but the tapes.............not so much!
The engine on your D.XII looks terrific, are you leaving it uncovered? Mine will be completely "buttoned up" so I've kept the detailing to the upper portion only. Both lovely Kits however I think the D.IIIa was more appealing.
Cheers,
Lance

Hi Lance, and thanks for your kind words. The engine will be buttoned up but I wasn't sure when I was at the detailing stage how it would end up. Here's a couple more pics. I agree about the appeal of the D.IIIA - beautiful lines!
Cheers,
Gary

Stunning work, Gary!  This is going to such a fun build to follow.  I've got both of these kits and itchin' to build 'em.

Superb work on both models Gary, the engine detailing is excellent as is the application of the black paint and decals.

Bud, Cajun, Des, Ed & Chris - I appreciate your kind feedback. I haven't posted much in-progress work before, but since I've really enjoyed and learned a lot from others on this site I thought I'd make an effort.

...............  and a superb effort at that, Gary! That Merc. is incredible, just stunning and a shame to cover up. This pair should be a spectacular sight when finished.
