TVAL flying weekend 27-28 February 2016
« on: March 05, 2016, 10:01:49 AM »
These photos were taken last weekend at Hood Aerodrome, Masterton, New Zealand.

Two new aeroplanes were on display but not flying yet, the LVG C.VI built for TVAL by the Memorial Flight in France and a BE12 built by TVAL themselves.

The LVG has an original Benz IV engine restored to running condition by TVAL.

The BE12 has a new build RAF 4a 140hp engine (same as the RE8), which has had some bench running but no flying time yet.

Some detail work still remains to be done on both machines - the LVG could use additional ammo drums for the Parabellum and the BE12 has not had its armament fitted yet.

The BE12 is finished in markings of 6493, B Flight, 50 Home Defense Squadron which saw some action against Zeppelin and Gotha raiders. It is fitted with Holt landing flares and red/green navigation night lights

The weather was great, particularly on the second day, very hot and with little wind. Shade was sought

Long distance 'artistic' shot with heat haze:

BE2f takes off

Very sedate flyer

Fokker EV is reckoned by the pilots to be the best dogfighter in the collection, but it is a bit underpowered

Yes there was adequate separation

I always love the deep rumble of the (original) Mercedes 180hp engine in the Albatros

Guided tour around the flightline at lunchtime

Engine run for the Corsair

Next flying weekend is 23-24 April.

I expect we will see the LVG and the BE12 flying as well as the new Sopwith Camel and maybe even the new Liberty-engined DH4. So who is coming over?

Thanks for looking in

Thanks for the feedback everyone. That was a month ago and there is another flying weekend day after tomorrow. Weather permitting, I expect to see the LVG C.VI and BE12 flying, maybe even the new DH4. That would be cool! But I have to stop by the Model Expo first and check out the Wingnut Wings stand and 'discuss the upcoming releases' as Richard has invited people to do ;-)

Thanks Jamo, fantastic pics as usual. I'd love to get down there for one of the flying days, but it's not going to happen this year. As a 9,000 hr pilot I HAVE to see these beauties in the air at sometime....and hopefully tie it in with a visit to Wanaka too.

She's incredibly accommodating when it comes to airshows and kits, but not this time!  :'(
