New painting - Barker's Revelation
« on: February 14, 2016, 12:24:09 AM »
BARKER'S REVELATION

Oil on linen
20" x 40"
available

Barker's Revelation depicts William Barker's victory over an Austrian scout near the Piave River in Italy on Sept. 18, 1918. The victim was Sergeant Ludwig Thaler of Flik 14D. As Thaler's Albatros began to burn he bailed out and deployed his parachute, a device which had only recently been introduced into the Austrian squadrons. The sight of the Austrian pilot floating safely to Earth helped to convince Barker that parachutes should be necessary equipment for all pilots.

I just love this piece, Russell. It presents such an unusual view and, for me, really captures the essence of the Camel. Bravo!

Best wishes
Nigel

Thanks so much everyone. The challenge to this one was getting the correct balance of values in background so that they didn't compete with the Camel.

I think you've achieved that balance perfectly, Russ!  One can even sense Barker's amazement by his posture.  Truly stunning work.
Cheers,
Bud

It is B6313, his Camel from 28 Sqn. to 66 Sqn. to 139 Sqn. He scored 46 of his 50 victories in it making it the "King Camel" of the war. His kill marks are thin white stripes on the leading port strut.  I believe it to be the only British a/c to have victory markings.

Thank you. Now, I think I may have to get a Wingnut Camel whenever it comes out as Barker's Camel in this painting will be one to do.
