Current Activities
« on: November 29, 2015, 01:34:15 PM »
Hi, All,

I thought that I'd better show up and let you know what's what before I get totally banned from the Forum.  ;)

First, and for many reasons, I took on the project of building a 1/700th scale resin Australian cruiser of World War Two. My modelling club is twinned with another from Canberra, Australia, and the build was to be entered in a Regional competition last September. It was so entered, and I am happy to report that it took First Place in its category. It was quite a long build (Feb - Jul) because I had virtually no experience with resin kits of this nature: I spent at least 1/3rd of the time learning the techniques required to get the project completed. Here is HMAS Sydney as she appeared in the Mediterranean Theatre in January, 1941:

Concurrent with other projects, I continued on a long-standing effort to complete a 1/72nd scale CC130E Hercules of the Royal Canadian Air Force. My son was the navigator on this aircraft during his last of seven deployments to Afghanistan. The project continues, and will probably be completed in early 2016. Here are two photos taken about one week ago (more decalling has taken place since then):

And, finally, in case you think that I have lost all interest in World War One, I also continue work on my other long-standing project - the F2B Bristol Fighter. I had three phases to complete: the observer's position; the extended exhausts on this particular subject; and the rigging. The attached photo shows the observer's position complete. Next, of course, will come the extended exhausts, and then the rigging. And I am already in the planning phase for my next build: the WNW Fokker E1. Concurrently, I may also work on the American version of the Renault FT-17 WW1 tank. We'll see how it all works out.

Best regards to all!  8)

Welcome back, Gary, and congrats on the well deserved win with that lovely Sydney!  Now, get to work on the Biff.
Cheers,
Bud

Well done ship, and congrats on the award. Nice water too! The Herc ought to be pretty fair size, nice way to honor your sons service as well. Biff is looking lovely.

Hi Guys:
"And now for something completely different."

I will chime in here too on Gary's thread:  I know this is off topic, but Gary Started it!   ;)  I have spent the last year working on the Trumpeter 1/200 Arizona as it appeared at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in January 1941.  I chose this time frame as the Kingfishers still wore the prewar hi-vis scheme and the ship was in a paint scheme in which there was no dispute.  The kit has it's usual detractors but; it goes together well and when finished, looks like the Arizona.  I used the ARTWOX wood deck and of course Bob's Buckles eyelets and tubes for the rigging.  Thanks Bob!  I used some Kit Provided PE, Eduard PE and White Ensign Models PE.  The skills I learend rigging WWI bi-planes carried over well in rigging this ship.  I have well over 2,000 hours into it, countless pieces of PE and a few scratch built items as well.  I have always been fascinated by the Pearl Harbor "Story" but more importantly the human drama from both perspectives, of events prior, during and after the attack with focus on the Arizona in particular.  I am hoping Trumpeter will release more of the Pearl Harbor ships in that time frame in this scale.
Whilst at CAPCON with Chris, Gary, Lance and Lindsay, Chris, with much cajoling and Chris like logic, with more cajoling from Gary, Lance and Linsay; almost had me convinced of my 'need' for the 1/200 Nelson.  I demured, when proudly I told my wife of how I foiled their scheme, she said"  Well why didn't you buy it?"  :o  I plan on getting back into the WWI side of the hobby and post pictures here.  Until that time:
The model is sitting on a book shelf that is a full 36" in length  (Almost a meter) to give the viewer a sense of size.

A starboard bow on shot

The Boat Deck:  I started by building the boats first.  I drilled out the portholes on the Captains Gig's and added Eduard PE for the interiors and the railings.

Port Amidships looking forward

Amidships looking aft.  Note the antenna Insulators on the main fighting top.  Bob's Buckles eyelets and tubes.

Number three turret with Kingfishers mounted.  This is the barbette that sticks out of the water and is visible from the memorial.  Survivors that have passed away can have their ashes interred here, divers carefully place the remains on the roller mounts inside the barbette.

Looking aft showing the Kingfishers to good affect.  I had to scrounge to get the markings for the kingfishers, but I think they really add to the model.  I did open one up as Eduard and WEM provided PE interiors for the aircraft.  I had to do a lot of carving and cutting to get them to fit, it turned out alright.

Aft Catapult with Kingfisher stowed.  The flag decals came with the kit.  I cut them out, fixed them to tin foil, aluminium to you folks down under and the U.K., sealed with Pledge future and attached to the rigging line.  I have the fags in a pierside configuration with the union jack on the jack staff on the bow and the national ensign on the flagstaff aft.

Finally port aft looking forward.  The letters on the stern are from the White Ensign Models PE Fret, I had to place each one individually, it turned out alright.

Thanks for looking

Mark

Superb Mark!

Having seen the 1/200 Nelson at Telford, I could happily join the team ready to convince you of you need to get it.

Best wishes
Nigel

Hello to Red, Des, Nigel, Bud, Mike and Mark,

Many thanks to you all for your very kind " welcomes back." Regarding the Fokker E1, I have found Bertl's build thread on the Forum and will be shamelessly plagiarizing his methods for my own nefarious build. Or, at least, those that I can actually use. Sometimes he gets so "creative" to the extent that I'm "left in the dust," as it were! But I am happy (and relieved) to see that he is using the Taurus Oberursel U.0 engine, as I am reliably informed that Santa Claus is planning to deliver one to me at Christmas. TIA to Umlaufmotor for his unintentional but very welcome assistance!  :)

Mark, happy to share my thread with you, especially as you're showing USS Arizona to our Forum friends. Excellent work all 'round, as we have discussed directly. Nigel, if we make another attempt to lure Mark into another 1/200th build, we'll certainly enlist your aid. But don't tell Mark!  ;)

Best Regards to all. Now, back to the Herc and Biff. Hope I don't mix them up...!  ;D
Cheers!
Gary

Hi, Mike,

The Hercules is the 1/72nd scale Esci kit, but still too large for my display case! There is a fair number of small amendments required: chaff/flare dispensers, anti-aircraft radar sensors, relocated external details such as nav lights, pitot tubes, antennas, aerials and the like. The decals are from a purpose-built sheet for these aircraft, with only one requirement that I'll have to print myself or have printed (depending on my skill level!). And thanks very much for your kind remark on the Biff!  8)
Cheers!
Gary
