Telford 2015 Photo Report
« on: November 15, 2015, 06:24:23 AM »
Hello All,

Please forgive the delay in publishing this report and put it down to a nasty bug that laid me low for almost a week and problems with the memory card in my camera.  As you know too this is a desperate time for France. Like us, our friends are traumatised by the events in Paris, but resolute in solidarity and belief in liberty, equality and fraternity.

The report will be published in three or four sections: the first two will relate to competition entries (two because there are so many photos) ; the third to products; and the fourth to odds and ends.  So, here we go.

Competition entries

My first impression was that there were fewer entries relevant to our period than last year’s bumper crop which may well have been boosted by centennial commemoration of the outbreak of the Great War. That said there were some absolute beauties on display, even though entries in some categories seemed  thin on the ground.  I’ve tried to capture as many views as was possible.

Class 10 was for scratchbuilt aircraft from 1/143 up to 1/72. Gold and the Jim Howard Trophy went to this Zeppelin Werke (Lindau) CS1

In Class 11, which was for propeller driven aircraft 1/71 up to 1/48 aircraft build from standard kits we had this lovely Eduard DH2.

IMG_1214 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

Class 19, for 1/71 and larger vacformed and scratchbuilt aircraft saw a bronze award go to a Lohner Type AA.

IMG_1216 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

Class 28 for Aircraft up to 1918, 1/72 scale and smaller standard kits, any source detailed, any source converted, vacformed, scratch built and super detailed, had this Roden 1/72 Bristol F2b. It took a gold.

IMG_1219 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

A bronze went to this attractive Airfix Roland C.II, though how long it would have survived with an SE5 in such close proximity is open to question!

IMG_1248 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

A vacformed Voisin LA-3 dropped by too.

IMG_1249 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

On now to the bigger models in Class 29 for Aircraft up to 1918, 1/71 scale up to 1/48 scale standard kits, any source detailed, any source converted, vacformed, scratch built and super detailed.  There were a couple of beauties here and I offer no apologies for the multiple shots.

First up, a lovely gold award winning, Special Hobby Lloyd CV.

Now one of my personal show favourites. If any of you naysayers don’t much fancy the idea of a WNW BE2c, just take a look at what fantastic work can be done with the Roden 1/48 model. It won a silver and Im not sure that my photos do it justice.

IMG_1269 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

IMG_1275 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

It wasn’t the only BE2 around. Here’s another and very nice too.

IMG_1228 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

Also nestling into Class 29 were a bronze award-winning Pfalz E.I and and commended Siemens Schuckert D.III based on the recent Eduard release.

IMG_1247 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

Finally, my notes don’t record which class this well presented little vacform Vickers FB19 received a silver award in. I suspect it was Class 9 for vacformed aircraft models 1/143 up to 1/72 scale. I hope the builder will accept my apologies for this omission.

IMG_1259 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

The next batch of photos will take you through the Class 30 -  Aircraft up to 1918 – 1/47 scale and larger standard kits any source detailed, any source converted, vacformed, scratch built and super detailed.  Hopefully, I’ll have those up within the hour.

Best wishes
Nigel

Thank you Nigel for this first batch of photos, there are some incredible models displayed here but my all time favorite has to be the Be.2, what an amazing looking model.

Thanks for posting, Nigel!  I agree with Des completely.  That BE2c is definitely my favorite.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks Des and Bud. Roll on that WNW BE2! (We hope)

Here's the next batch of photos.

Now let’s move up a scale to Class 30 with its aircraft up to 1918 – 1/47 scale and larger. Where else should be start but with Gisbod’s mighty fine Felixstowe which deservedly took a silver award? I hope you’ll forgive my clumsy camera work, Guy, which seems not always to have captured the subtle nuances of your paintwork

IMG_1251 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

This scratchbuilt Morane Saulnier Type L was commended.

IMG_1230 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

Staying on the Allied side there was a very nice Bristol F2b, based, of course on the magnificent WNW kit.

IMG_1233 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

IMG_1243 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

And an imposing Caproni Ca-3

IMG_1238 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

IMG_1252 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

If we cross the front line, a fine Eindekker took a bronze award.

IMG_1246 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

It was more than ably supported by a Hansa-Brandenburg W12

IMG_1263 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

IMG_1264 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

IMG_1237 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

And this DFW C.V which won the Gas Patch Trophy. I’m sorry that the second of the photos is a bit fuzzy

IMG_1239 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

IMG_1240 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

There also a very nice Hannover C.III on hand.

IMG_1231 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

But now feast your eyes on this Gold award-winning stripped down Fokker D.VII which also took the Cross and Cockade trophy. The caption card describes its derivation.

IMG_1245 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

IMG_1254 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

IMG_1261 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

And finally, I’m hoping someone can help me out with this Airco, which for reasons I can’t explain,  I could only capture from a bizarre, upside  angle. Whatever, it won gold in Class 33, which was for hypothetical aircraft (paper projects and imaginary), any scale standard kitany source detailed, any source converted, vacformed, scratch built, super detailed

IMG_1262 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

Well, that’s it for the moment. Tomorrow, I’ll put up just a few shots from some trade stands.

Best wishes
Nigel

Thanks Nigel for the additional photos, more beautiful models.

The Airco appears to be the first prototype of the DH.10, it was fitted with two 230hp Siddeley Puma engines mounted as pushers.

Thanks Nigel - that's certainly helped fill in the gaps that I missed from getting to the comp hall too late. All stunning examples of the model makers art of course but for me I still think that little Lohner was an absolute gem of a model

Thanks for the pics Nigel. isn't that Ron k's Caproni? beautiful build and finish. Also that Be-2c and Voisin are just the kits we need from WNW.
Edit- I also initially thought the DVII stripdown was possibly an Aviattic prototype. Can anyone shed any light of that build?

I'm really looking forward to buying the D.VII stripdown! I already have a WnW kit earmarked for the project. Chema did a fantastic job with the parts your team has developed and you have another great member on the team!

Thank you for the reply Richard! An exquisite build, and I can easily see this stripdown style in a Camel, tripe(Fokker, and Sopwith) a DVIII, and quite a few others.

Hello All

Having already devoted two postings to competition entries of particular interest, I’d like to focus on some of the traders at this great show. There is just so much to look at, bargains to search out and friends to meet in the three main exhibition halls.

With so many competitive kit sellers in attendance, there were bargains to be had for those willing to put in the leg work. For example, I found the Revell 1/48 Fokker Dr.I and Bristol F2b Fighter (both ex-Eduard) offered for £6.99 and £8.99 respectively, and the 1/28 Camel for just £8.99. Buried in one stand the Merit 1/24 Dr.I could be had for £40. There were just a handful of WNW kits on sale, but nothing exceptional, although Pheon had some on offer.

I did pick up the magnificent HpH resin Macchi M-5 for just £70. The guys at HpH even knocked it down from £75 without my asking, had placed an exquisite piece of chocolate inside the box and added a can of beer which my son-in-law subsequently appreciated!

One of the continuing trends seems to be towards ever larger models. This was most evident with what I guess to be a Trumpeter 1/200 HMS Hood complementing their recent HMS Nelson in the same scale. These are enormous models and the built Nelson with its etched brass looked amazing.  I noticed that one company was offering a beautiful dedicated etched brass set for the latter and, if I remember correctly the price approached £150.

Back on planet Earth from my financial perspective, I visited the Airfix and Eduard stands. Gisbod has already posted some photos of the former’s two 2016 Great War additions. Here are a few more. Unfortunately, my photos of the Eindekker were not successful. Sorry. I did wonder about the size of the aircrew included and would also want some reassurance that they are equipped in typical period clothing etc.

IMG_1181 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

IMG_1182 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

I tried to push them on whether others were maybe in the pipeline and if they had plans to upscale these (as they have done with the 1/72 BP Defiant). There was nothing to say on this.

Over at Eduard, I wanted to know more about the much anticipated SE5a. In truth I had hoped that there might be a sneak preview. However, I was told not to expect it until June 2016. It will be a completely new model and not a re-working/revision of the Roden models.

I was most anxious to get around to some great forum friends. With Sabine and Rowan not able to attend having recently moved house, the Pheon stand was in the more than capable hands of Caroline and Jonathan.

IMG_1210 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

No doubt you’ll notice the beautiful new Jasta 17and Jasta 30 1/32 sets, as well as the decals for the 1/48 Siemens-Schuckert D.III. Part of the display advertised the limited edition 1/32 Felixstowe decals. At the moment a production defect with these is being resolved – what else would you expect given Pheon’s commitment to quality? Having already received an early copy, they look beautiful. All I need now is a Felixstowe on which to put them! Ahem! Looking again at the photo I’m sure you’ll see a small stash of WNW models that were being sold off. Why is it that Albatros D.Va’s always seem to go first?

Right next door to the Pheon stand were Amanda and Richard with the Aviattic stand. Sadly, Harry is in ill-health and could not attend; I’m sure we all wish him well. Naturally enough there was interest in progress on the Ansaldo.

IMG_1198 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

IMG_1207 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

Whilst at the Aviattic stand I had the privilege of meeting Ron K who, with others, has worked closely with Richard on this one. Anyway, Richard and Ron explained one important feature of the Ansaldo kit and that is that struts will have an inner core of metal, so there should be no fear of those for the wings bowing out or the undercarriage sagging at the knees.

Things of such quality cannot be rushed and we’ll have to be a bit patient yet. However, the Ansaldo is available to pre-order and it looks as if we’ll have a choice of versions: one in Italian service; the other in Polish or Russian service.

IMG_1208 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

Exciting though the Ansaldo is, the real surprise of the show, for me at least, came in the form of a multi-media  1/32 Pfalz  Dr.I which we can expect in 2016.  I know that Gisbod has already published a photo of it, but here are two more. Hands up all those who wondered why Aviattic  produced a 1/32 Siemens Halske SH III motor!

IMG_1202 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

IMG_1204 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

The following shots will give a sense of some of the other goodies on show at Aviattic.

IMG_1209 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

IMG_1203 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

IMG_1206 by nigeljjackson, on Flickr

The first of this batch shows the now familiar Fokker D.VII strip-down parts (but note that the pre-order sticker relates to another product). Following that we have a display featuring examples of the Aviattic lozenge work. Finally, a shot I’ve included for two reasons. First as a reminder to myself that the lorry will, I understand, have a metal shaft to bear the weight of the resin. Second, the large-scale empennage, is a means of showing some of the surface finish decals and rib tapes available; and very effective they looked too - better than my hopeless photo can show.

Well, that’s a lot for now. I’ll try and add some more things tomorrow.

Best wishes
Nigel

Great stuff, Nigel! Great photos and wonderful commentary! Thanks for taking the time to take and post them. Makes those of us who hope to go next year salivate all the more.

I love that BE2c...nice and dirty, and well used.... just the way Lance and I like 'em, eh' Lance!!!

One thing 99% of these photos show that drives me pretty crazy is the idea of having wings over hang the bases by considerable amounts. It always puts me in mind of an airplane sitting on a catapult. There are some very basic rules of design that make it clear just way this sort of presentation only serves to detract from the model being displayed but so many model builders seem to feel the basic rules of design don't apply to them.

Sorry...not my intention to derail the thread. Just one of my pet peeves. I'll be quiet now.

Great pics, thanks for taking the time and effort to keep those of us unable to attend up to date.
Michael, I have to agree - if you're going to display anything on a base then the base has to be at least the size of the model!
