Captain Yonge DFC (RNAS)
« on: October 23, 2015, 03:02:24 AM »
Hello chaps,

Apologies again for posting very little - real life taken over and I just haven't had time to model.. I do always look in and follow all the incredible work of everyone even though I don't post much!  ;) However, I thought some of you here would be interested to see this:

I've gone completely mad - but feel incredibly lucky to have received this WW1 DFC group  :) it's quite simply the most lovely thing I've ever owned by miles..

Capt John Arthur Yonge RAF (formerly Sub-Lieutenant  RNAS). Seaplane pilot on numerous ships then posted to the Aegean Front on Sopwith Camels as a fighter pilot.

Gained his ticket in 1915 prior to joining the RNAS..

It comes with the most incredible research file - over 120 sheets of A4, detailing confidential reports/ patrol reports/ service records/ photos & a copy of a peers published book (The War Diary of a Naval Airman 1915-18) with numerous references to Capt Yonge and day to day life on the squadron. An incredible read, and it's so comprehensive that I'm half tempted to turn the whole lot into a book myself (if I had the talent!).

I suddenly can't wait for Wingnut's Camel to come out! Where can I pre-order..  ;D I like his colourful Camel..

Hello Bob, yep, it's a book waiting to be written.. I will ask Ray's advice..

Guy,
What an absolute treasure, where on earth did you get them?

Hi Lance, unfortunately I didn't find them in the loft! Got them off a medal dealer in the UK..  Not cheap, but I still think a bargain in medal terms..

Yes, it does seem rather a privilege and responsibility Des,

It says he flew Sopwith Camels and Sopwith Fighters? I hadn't heard of a Sopwith Fighter?

That is just great!  How fortunate you are to be the caretaker of those items for the next generation. (As a former collector, we never "own" them, we just hold them and take care of them for the next generation IMHO.)

Incredible piece of history, Guy, especially the DFC, which is beautiful.
The printed information is amazing in itself. Take good care of it, my friend. :D

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thanks chaps,

I certainly will..  Fascinating reading the articles with it.

I've managed to track down a descendent and he's got loads of stuff too and extra photos so we're going to meet up.. All very interesting!

What a wonderful acquisition, Guy!  As a pilot, it must be otherworldly to be able to touch these bits of history.
Cheers,
