New from Michigan
« on: July 22, 2012, 12:32:24 PM »
Hello everyone ... My name is Steve and I am from Niles Michigan , I work in South Bend Indiana as a quality control engineer in an aerospace part manufacturing company ... Great work , long hours and very interesting projects we get to work on .
I have built models my whole life ... Probably built every car model produced since 1979 at least once ... Looking to move on and broaden my building skills ... I think now as I am older (41) I need to have my brain jump started , work on projects that require research , planning and patience ... I can build a car model with my eyes closed ... I've always been interested in WWI air planes ... I think it's time for me to get deeply involved , hopefully I could post some builds in the future ... From what I've seen there are some fantastic artist here ... Hope I can learn a lot from you all ... Have a great evening everyone
Steve B.
P.S. I also am a Freemason and a B.P.O.E member so if there are any Bro.'s on the forum I would like to say hi to you and would be interested in talking to you all ....

Welcome to the forum, Steve.  Good to see another newcomer to WWI aviation modeling.  Just a tad bit more rigging than a Dodge, but plastic's plastic.  I look forward to seeing your work soon.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks guys for welcoming me to the forum ... I've probably spent way more time already going through the posts than my feiance would like ... But I've had a lot of fun and learned a lot too ... Going to get my first kit ordered soon ... Any suggestions ?
I have went through the beginners page and seen the kits reviewed but was wanting others to give their opinions too ... Thanks again

  Steve,
Although I'm certain of your preferred scale I do have two suggestions to offer. For 1/72 or 1/48 I would suggest the Eduard's Fokker Dr.I for it's simple construction and rigging, not to mention all the aftermarket markings options available. If you're interested in 1/32 scale I would suggest the Academy Nieuport 17 for it's relative ease of construction and minimal rigging. Any of these kits mentioned build into an excellent model straight from the box. Whatever you choose the best of luck to you and please post a WIP thread for your project my friend.

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum, whatever scale you choose there are dozens of guys on here that will fall over themselves to give you assistance and always remember, the only daft question is the one that you don't ask.

Cheers

Thanks ... Pete,Gregory,Steve,Bud and Des for welcoming me and giving me great advice and inspiration ... I'd like to ask more questions but I'm not too sure where to ask them ... There doesn't seem to be a general question area on the forum ... If there is I have not found it yet and I apologize ... Please feel free to scold me and point me in the right direction ...  :-[

My question is : What scale do most of the members here build ... I personally like the bigger 1/32 scale ... But the smaller scale seems to have more variety ... But is the detail comparable ... Not too sure , any suggestions would be great
Again thank you all for being so friendly
Steve B.

Hi Steve,  scale preference is entirely up to you and your ability to construct the smaller scale kits. There is a huge variety of kits available in 1:72 and 1:48 scales from a multitude of manufacturers, some are excellent with great detail while others are fairly basic and need work. The 1:32 scale kits are somewhat limited but new releases are happening on a regular basis which is increasing the available range. Roden have a good range of 1:32 kits as does Wingnuts, the latter being the ultimate in 1:32 scale WW1 model aircraft kits.

The hints and tips section is a good place to post questions, there are many very experienced modelers on the forum and they are all willing to share their knowledge, I'm sure that any questions you have will be answered quite quickly. Please feel free to ask as many questions as you like, no question is regarded as trivial.

There is a new board which was only started yesterday, Specific Aircraft Build Links, this will be an excellent place to look for a particular model and to see how other modelers have gone through the construction process, it will help less experienced modelers deal with any issues with the kits and will offer great advice on how to build the model.

Welcome to our little world Steve. On your Scale question some ramblings from an old Guy............. I worked in 1/48 Scale in the past as it offered a great variety of kits and lots of potential for detail. Approaching late 50's I discovered that my finger tips were getting bigger and less under control and vision was becoming less accute; fortunately Roden were offering some really nice subjects and with the arrival of Wingnut Wings on the scene I switched to 1/32 Scale exclusively and I really enjoy it. Enjoyment is the key and Des says it so well, "ability to construct the smaller scales" is a big player.
I'm biased to the larger scale however I'd recommend you try both with a keen eye on enjoyment, the rest will follow.
Happy Modelling! (and looking forward to seeing your results)
Cheers,
Lance

  Steve,
Another old guy chiming in here my friend. My preferred scale is 1/32 as well for both WW I and WWII projects. However I do dabble in 1/48 scale on occasion especially if the kit isn't available in 1/32 scale. I haven't build any 1/72 scale aircraft models in years now but I still believe they have merit. I'm totally amazed at the projects that are turned out in such a small scale.
