Great to see Merit is going ahead with this kit, it looks to be a fairly good kit going by the sprues.

Looks like a very nice kit.  Loads of detail.  The color of the streaking seems a bit weird, though.
Cheers,
Bud

I dunno; the whole thing looks pretty clunky to me for 1/24. But I will withhold final judgement until it actually comes out...

I am hesitant to agree but.... To me the "Subtle" rib detail looks a lot like the Revelle 1/28th kit, especially the tail feathers. Like you said lets wait until released!

i'm with bo, for 1/48 the detail looks nice for 1/24 not so much. basic shapes seem fairly close. but this just says to me more value for my money cuz i get to super detail it.

I'm sorry, but I have found a few flaws at a first glance of the pictures... the rudder bar and fuel pressure pump both look really undersized, the front fuselage "cheeks" have a strange, too chiseled shape, the fuel gauge fairing location is not correct... and the list goes on. To my eye the old 1/24 Revell kit looks more like a Dr.1 - As a good point, the engine looks well detailed, even if I can't see the cylinder cooling fins.

Hello All

Well, it's always good to see another model from our favourite period. Broadly I'm with Bo in reserving final judgement until we see the final thing, but, yes it does seem at first sight a bit heavy handed, the tailplane particularly so. It came as a surprise to see the interplane struts offered in four rather than two pieces; it could make alignment less than straightforward.

Best wishes
Nigel

To quote the review:

"the Oberursel rotary engine is nicely represented, although no provision is provided for it, or the propeller, to turn"

A none rotating prop! well that's sunk it for me  ::)  ;)

also in a plane that size it should of done the seat frame separate instead of incorporating it into the side frame.it should be a separate unit even the Edward kid in 148 does the seat framing as a separate unit.that's what evergreen is for I'm going to get one and I can have fun scratchbuilding details

Finescale Modeler's newsletter has a link to a brief video review of the kit. Think you have to be a subscriber but I provided the link just in case you can access it.

Thanks for posting the link. It does work for non members. Retail is listed as $68.00 so I think one is on my purchase list. More if the kit proves to be better than what I can see on the sprues. I think I will be using oils for the streaks as those decals don't seem to be in the ballpark !

Thanks Derrick for the link, it worked for me. The guys give a fairly good description of the kit but some close-up shots would be nice just to see how much detail there actually is, the price is good.

A range of new 1/24 scale WW1 aircraft is an exciting prospect and I am especially keen on the forthcoming SE5a. Given how few manufacturers support WW1 in large scale now, I  won't join in any nit picking about perceived errors based solely on some sprue photos. When the kit is released people with way more knowledge of the subject than me will evaluate it and pass judgement based on the plastic, not some photos.

Like all models we as customers can buy or ignore. The $US 68 price works out at $A 92 today. Add postage from overseas ( if Aussie shops don't stock it) and then it's up against the value for money argument vs Wingnut Wings new releases. We know Wingnuts won't be doing `1/24 scale and at least the Merit kits could sit beside some of the 1/24 subjects from Airfix and Trumpeter.

I'm just happy someone has enough confidence in large scale WW1 to invest in a new range. Not excusing any horrible flaws and failings ( the streaked decals of the DR.1 look awful!) but it's nice to have some 1/24 WW1 kits on the way.

I noticed on the sprue containing the axle cover "wing" that they've made the same error as other kit makers, i.e., the clips which hold the two parts on the bottom.
AFAIK there should only be two square shaped clips close to each wheel.  Not that big a problem, I just don't understand how kit makers just don't do a bit more research instead of perpetuating the same mistakes.
