Cobby's Camel, 1/28 Revell by Ed Boll, Dr1 Ace

This past Saturday, Ed and I attended the First Great War Symposium put on by San Jose State University and sponsored by the League of World War One Aviation Historians.  What was supposed to be a model contest turned into a three man show with Ed and I displaying 9-10 models each and a fellow named Mike O'Leary (not Calif Mike) showing a gorgeous 1/16 scratch built Nieuport 11 that his father built 50 years ago.  For the first time, I had the rare treat of seeing Ed's remarkable Camel live and what a stunner she is!  I asked him to post some photos here, so he sent them to me, I transferred them to Photobucket, and here they are.  Enjoy.

Ed is a remarkable modeler and this Sopwith Camel is testament to his talents, a superb model in all aspects. Thanks Bud for posting the images.

   I've built several of these over my 60+ years of this Hobby, I can't believe the quality that Ed has produced with what is, IMHO, a very basic Kit. Just plain magnificent, a superb example of what a great scale modeller can do when he decides to produce a top of the line replica.
   This is inspiring to say the least, Ed, perhaps somewhat late but my sincere compliments on a very beautiful model.

I keep wondering how people manage to place the small 'acorn' in the rigging between the front cabane struts and, presumably between the undercarriage legs. It looks so effective here. How is it done?

I would never have believed that this was the old Revell offering of over 50 years vintage. What a remarkable achievement from a truly great modeller.

As for the streamlined "acorn",  mounting holes are pre-drilled, then use semi-rigid wire, careful measuring, secure the bottom 2 first, then fit the upper. The decals are from a now OOP IPMS Decal; applied as on the real A/c. The Charlie Chaplin figure was first painted on some sheet metal then applied to the fuselage, so applied the decal on some .oo4 alum first.  The Captions above the figures ( lf side- "Caution it is dangerous to lean out of the window", rt side- "Do not Spit" are liberated brass plates from an English train) as well as the Cowl Plate caution for re-synco of guns if propeller is removed- are readable, so used the same thin alum before applying.

truly remarkable camel.as I have mentioned in the past ed boll is one of the most respected World War 1 modelers since the 1970s and before I imagine.I came across some old Ipms journals from the 1970s and 1980s and looking at the world war 1 aircraft model that impressed me one name came up over and over ed boll,ed boll.its guys like him who laid the groundwork for ustoday
