Eduard SSW
« on: September 10, 2015, 10:52:03 AM »
I recently started this kit after about a year long hiatis.  ::) I've always liked the SSW and with Eduard's new release drew me back to the workbench. I'm a rather slow builder but here's some pics of what I finished so far. The engine is the Eduard "Brassin" resin replacement. I replaced the flat pe pushrods with .010 brass wire rod. The seatbelts are the Eduard Super Fabric set. Sorry for the not so great pics but I only have an iPhone for now to take pics.  :-[

I do like how your painting of the engine turned out and that wood finish ...well done ! I also note that you sanded off the stitching on the rib tapes  8)

You have done a superb job with the wood, it is a beautiful colour, and the engine looks really good.

Outstanding work on the interior, Chuck, and that engine is truly superb!  Glad to see this one started and looking forward to the next update.

Skeeterbuck, I totally agree with the positive comments above, I love the wooden tone you achieved, will follow you with high interest also because I have purchased the same kit and the resin enhancements (engine and MGs).

Thanks to all for the positive comments.

For those interested my techniques for the engine and wood finishes.

Engine: painted overall Gunze silver and allowed to dry. Then a black enamel wash for the cylinders and the intake pipes painted black and allowed to dry. Then overall covering with raw umber artist oil to simulate the burnt castor oil. Most of this is removed with a clean dry brush to remove the excess and just basically tint the silver paint and remain in the deep recesses. After allowing several days for the oil paint to dry a  coat of 50/50 Tamiya clear orange and thinner was sprayed over the entire engine. A final light dry brushing of silver over the details completed the effect.

Wood: painted overall using Gunze "sail" color and when dry was tinted with yellow ocher, burnt sienna & raw umber artist oils. I don't strive to impart a "grain" into the finish but am looking for an overall pleasing and hopefully accurate color. I then use a lightly dampened brush to remove excess color from the edges of the formers etc. to give additional depth to the finish. After allowing to dry for several days I lightly spray the area with Tamiya clear yellow.

Yea Terri, It's hard to understand Eduards thinking to do all that extra detailing that just has to be removed to be accurate. You would think in this day and age that companies would know how to properly portray linen covered wings. I wish they would have put that extra detailing into the engine which is poorly done IMHO. To Eduards credit they did get much of the kit correct and it's miles ahead of the initial offering from the 90's. And they did make the resin replacement engine with is very nice indeed.

Thanks for the heads up Martin. I've already placed my order with Richard and with the exception of the lower wing, all flying surfaces are painted and awaiting their arrival.
