A little damp underfoot

We have just had 8 times our average August rain fall in the last 48 hours. My town has had 400mm of rain which has caused flooding and major traffic disruptions, houses are being evacuated as water levels continue to rise. All the towns along the south coast of NSW are experiencing torential rain falls and local flooding, the Shoalhaven River is expected to peak tonight at 4M. Our weather forcast for tomorrow, rain easing.

That is terrible. Especially when one thinks that up here, in Poland we have draught. August topped the long period without any real rain, water level in our river Warta is as low as I do not remember in my life. Farmers are going to get refunds for lost crops. The only rains we had recently were two or three horrible storms which caused damage to houses, trees, etc but did not help much with the ground water level.
Well, we have to survive, Des... Though I am sure our farmers would gladly take a lot of your rainfall surplus...

.....and last year it was wild fires! The weather world wide has really gone amok, here we are suffering a drought  although in my specific area it isn't as bad as most of western Canada. Hope things settle down, Des, sounds pretty darned serious.

Early in July, this year, we had ten minutes of hailstorm, with hail up to 7cm diameter (no joke, unfortunately). Damages included: windows smashed in (cars and houses), cars re-designed, corn crop devastated, even animals killed (again: no joke).

Here in Italy we had a very very hot summer - peaking 40 degrees. I was almost ill when I went to Turin... my skin was filled of water bubbles from the burning.
Anyway I do not envy your rain
even if, like someone said "but to the multitudes who stand in the rain heaven is where the sun shines"

Here in Farnborough, UK we had 4cm of rain in six hours yesterday. Buses and trains were halted and the town was flooded.

I hope you aren't one of the evacuated, Des.  I saw on the news brief
video of your terrible situation. Strange, as the farmers here were given
next to no rain this summer.  Thinking you and your countrymen in this
latest trial.

We are fortunate enough to be living on higher ground in Shoalhaven Heads and have no fear of being flooded, but we are still isolated from the major towns with nearly all the roads being cut by flooding. The next few days will see the water levels drop and things will get back to some sort of normality.

I'm glad to hear that you're above the flood plain Des, and in no immediate danger.  At the bottom of our garden there is the small tributary of a river. At the moment it's very low indeed, but in spring it becomes a raging, noisy torrent.

A couple of my mates have caravans down at Lake Conjola that are now worse for wear.....good excuse for all us fire fighters to have a 'working bee' on our days off
