The one that got me started - DML 1/48 Fokker Dr.1
« on: April 19, 2012, 03:18:56 AM »
The Dr.1 is one of my favorite WWI aircraft and knowing that, a friend who insisted I build something from that era, sent me the 1/48 DML kit as a gift several years ago.  This was my first step into the wonderful world of aircraft with more than one wing!

Like many, FOR (Fear of Rigging) was a big factor in my avoidance of such aircraft so the limited amount on the Triplane makes it an excellent first subject for a would-be WWI modeler.  The task is made even easier by DML's use of fine stainless wire and their method of installation.  Not the most accurate, but very easily done.

This model was also a test bed for learning to work with acrylic paints (Mister Kit) and artist oil paints for both wood simulation on the interior and the notorious Fokker streaked camo.  What you see here was accomplished after many trials, errors, weeping, and gnashing of teeth!   :)

If I recall correctly, the decals were from Eagle Strike.  I must also admit that I "cheated" a bit with the prop as it is a carved wood piece I purchased through Copper State Models.  I merely had to add the hub detail from a photo-etched set.

Cheers,
Eric

Nice one!

Yes, rigging a biplane is probably the most demanding part - I'm still learning myself!

Absolutely gorgeous, Eric.  Love the scheme.
