Tale of woe
« on: June 23, 2015, 09:09:40 AM »
So I have had a tough time with models for the past 6 months or more. Just one thing after another. I've stopped posting builds because something always happens. Well for the past few weeks I have been building an Albatros. Everything has been going okay and I was feeling good about this. I even have Bo's amazing rad installed and had no issues. Today I looked at it and figured I was ready to button up the fuselage and thats what I did. Fit was good, no seams or anything, just perfect. Time to work on the engine and I'm drilling holes like I knew what I was doing.
Tonight at work I went to the cafeteria for supper. Perusing my refs and planning what to do and I saw big as day a picture of the cockpit. The support bar that has the big tach on it and supports the rear of the machine guns was sitting there bold as could be. And then the dreadful realization. I didnt add that center piece, something so visable. I mean I even remembered to drill out the holes at the rear of the fuse for my OAW version. Now I'm wondering how I will get this in without destroying my work.
Sigh, what an idiot I am.

James,

Hang in there. You are not alone.

I was working on my W.12 cockpit. I could find no references but I was determined to do as much detailing on the fuel tank as I could. I saw Bertl's build of the W.29 and figured the fuels tanks had to be similar, so, assumed if I made mine look like his, I'd be OK. And remember, I am the guy who crows, "don't make models of other people's models". So, I cut out a little dial face for what I assumed was the fuel gauge and found an instrument decal the looked right and went through all sorts of issues getting it mounted, etc. Finally, it looked out of scale but I figured it would do. I was breaking all my own rules, but, I figured it would be OK.

After going through all of this craziness it was only THEN that I noticed two little squares with numbers on them smack in the middle of the WnW instruction book; Sir Peter had been kind enough to provide the correct decals and correct sized fuel gauge right from the beginning.....I do not know how many times I looked at that page before starting the build and during the days I've been working on the cockpit, but, somehow, I never saw the indication for the decals. As my wife said, "well, honey, they're outlined in blue big as life.....how could you miss them???" Thanks, dear.

Justin's fix sounds pretty straight forward. Go for it, take your time, relax, and enjoy the build and you will find that your slump is over.

Vaya con Dios.

Cheers from NYC,
Michael

Good to hear you overcame this James.

We have all done it - I missed the magneto switch on a model - either the WNW Roland or DVa - but managed to add in afterwards with very careful use of long tweezers.

Thanks guys. I know it probably sounds childish and whiny, but its very depressing when you cant even build a simple model whether a/c or armour. And every problem amplifies and exasperates the situation. So small victories are important and stupid mistakes are suddenly catastrophic problems. I'm pushing it with detailing the engine, but I do have a spare if anything goes wrong. At the risk of jinxing myself, this is what I have accomplished.

The PE I found on ebay after seeing Bo use it for his Rad installation. Again thanks for the help and confidence boost.
