I'll take a stab at why the old Academy Camel keeps getting re-popped while the newer Camels are extinct... I think it's about mould licensing. Academy probably has some re-pop rights to that old kit which I understand was originally developed by Hobbycraft of Canada which had some moulding arrangement with Korean companies at that time.

Hobbycraft brought out their new Camel kits while Academy kept the old mould which it has licensed to various entities, such as apparently Italeri now.

This is not an official explanation but based on what I've gleaned from sundry reports on the old Hobbycraft/ Academy links.

The licensing status of the new tool Hobbycraft Camels is unclear but for whatever reasons the kits are dormant and nobody has had the authority to reissue them whereas Academy repops the old Camel complete with upside down machine guns.

I'll agree with speculation that the Wingnuts Camel may be a Christmas release this year. Fingers crossed.

You are more than likely right, where I was confused was I thought there would be only one set of steel moulds for this kit, and at some point Academy re-tooled them for the improved kit. So shouldnt only the "new" version be able to be produced/cast?

There must be more than one set of moulds then I guess - surprising as I always heard those are terribly expensive?

As noted it doesnt matter much as more than likely we will see a new kit not too far off....

Speaking of which, is the Nieuport 17 likely to be the Academy kit? I asked on Facebook last night if it was a "new Italeri tool" but have had no response.

The Nieuport 17 in all likelihood is the Academy tool. To my knowledge Italeri have no new-tool WW1 kits in their catalogue. The Academy Camel and Nieuport have been keeping each other company for some years now. Various reissues with alternative decal options. I have an RFC one but there's also a French scheme among others.

One can view parts & decals for both (old HC/Academy molds) kits on the Jadar Hobby website www.jadarhobby.pl
Might get the Nie.17 just for the decal options; The Mastercasters sets help the kit a lot

The photos of the parts of both models are on the Italeri website

The Camel is the old one, while the Nieuport tool has been slightly retouched.

i got 3 of those nieuports ,it looks like the same molds to me. although 5 decal options makes it tempting. throw a mastercasters cockpit set in,some gaspatch gunnery and a few scratch built odds and ends and it ends up a decent looking model. better than the new old tool camel anyway. still think hobbycrafts best kit was their 1/32 spad xiii.

yes, they look almost the same:, but at least in one detail they have been changed.
They lost the chance to go deeper and add some new pieces like they did with other models.
Pity, since probably the sales would have brought us some new WW1 models in the future.

Anyway I know that the  people working at Italeri are modellers and that they hear the customer's voice.
So try to ask them for a re-Pop of the Hobbycraft Spad XIII and of the two good Camels through an email to  [email protected]
I am almost sure that if they have some demand and the operation is commercially feasible (i.e. if Hobby Craft is willing to have another run of the biplanes selling them to Italeri), they will try to fullfill our desires.
And ... do not forget to ask why they did not release that Caproni 33 in 1/48 that they put among the future releases some years ago. :)

On Facebook in answer to my query they said to go to the website!

I'll do that now and check out the sprues. The Academy boxing is very cheap here - on par with the simpler 1/72 Airfix kits!
