Hello from Athens, Greece
« on: April 27, 2015, 06:40:08 PM »
Hi everyone,

This is Chris, 36 of age, coming from Athens, Greece. I am rejoining the modelling world after something more than twenty years. Back then I was building all sorts of jets in all sorts of scales (most of them within an afternoon or two), a couple of helicopters and a couple of 1/700 ships.

A couple of months ago I felt like building something once again and for some reason the Sopwith Camel came to mind. I started researching the actual aircraft and I was amazed by the sheer bravery required to fly these contraptions, let alone flying them while being fired at. Researching for models of said aircraft, I found the academy 1/32 and this brought me to Des's site. Tons of info to absorb, lot's of things to try, a great read overall.

One thing has already led to another, I have found out about WnW, eduard, roden, special hobby, fly models, aeroclub, airscale, taurus, gaspatch... I made my own eyelets and turnbuckles, I experimented with shades, pre and post. Tried painting oils and liked the result (but not the taste), practised cutting brass tube with a scalpel, pulled my hair over PE parts that would fly out of sight or stick to my fingertips. I even dusted off my twenty year old airbrush and to everybody's surprise it was still working, so I got him a compressor. Now, I have a stash of about 12 1/48 roden and eduard biplanes (and triplanes and eindeckers), an 1/32 academy nieuport 17 and a WnW bristol f2b (the crown jewel for now)

Other hobbies include motorcycle travel, camping, photography, electronic circuits fiddling, some very basic metalworking skills and laser light effects and projectors. All of the above (except the motorcycle / travel part) have helped a lot in terms of transferable skills, so despite my short time re-discovering the hobby, I feel quite confident to take on increasingly complex things. Now, I need to find the time to do it!

Nice to see you all here, hope I can contribute something interesting sometime soon. Below is my work-in-progress academy sopwith, because we all like pics, don't we?

Welcome to this wonderful forum, Chris, which I find a constant source of inspiration.

I've got a 1/48 Camel, in progress, if perhaps stalled for too long now.

Best wishes
Nigel

Welcome here.
What is opinion about this Academy Camel?
Now I'm doing Academy Nieuport 17, when I bought it, after opening box I saw that this fuselage is empty inside. Very poor cockpit, to improve it I bought resin cockpit.
Few days ago I saw on the Italieri page that in May will be ready Camel and Nieuport 17 in 1:32.
May be these will better than those from the Academy?
If yes I will buy Camel.

Adam.

Welcome aboard, Chris!  That's a very fine looking Camel you've got going there.  I look forward to seeing her completed and seeing more of your work in the future.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks to everyone for the replies. It is nice to see such a vibrant online community  8)

BO, Athens (Greece in general) is a bit (pun intended) difficult to live in at the moment, but the beauty of small hidden corners is still there. I'd be glad to suggest a couple of places to see off the beaten track, if you come again

Adam, the kit was OK to start with. Fit was very good, and the instructions were clear. I was not happy with the empty interior and poor instruments, too, but I got a Parts PE set and that took care of many many things http://model-art.eu/userdata/gfx/c2c35e67c2ea058d1d2868c8f30ab0e4.jpg.

I don't like the decals very much, as I find them not very flexible, even after softer/setter. In general I would recommend the kit, for the price it is unbeatable and a great platform to customise as much as you like! Let's wait and see the Italeri kit, May is almost here
