Eddie Rickenbacker's Nieuport 28 (or was it only one of them?), the Roden 1/32 kit, displayed with US figures from Aviattic

I enjoyed building this, and am pleased with the outcome. I don't know how accurate it's supposed to be, but it looks the business to me.
I reckon it's a good kit for a beginner, because despite the double rigging, crucially it features those stays on the centre section struts which makes fitting the top wing and lining it up MUCH easier.

And I'd agree with those who reckon the Nieuport was one of WWI's more elegant aircraft :)

Must admit, I would have liked to find a suitable resin figure of Rickenbacker.
I'm not the most accomplished figure painter, but I like this little group from Aviattic and how they turned out. Although I know they were really aimed at the Salmson kits.
I have before now hacked away at a figure to make it a little more like an actual pilot, and I took off the pilot's moustache here; but the thing about Rickenbacker is that he had a very distinctive face and demeanour, and it was beyond me to achieve in this case. Here's hoping one of the many skilled sculptors around at the moment will have a go!

I did also use and would recommend Aviattic's resin extras for this kit, the cowling and the 'peach basket' pilot's seat. Pity that I haven't managed to produce a decent picture of the seat, but it is indeed there and is a nice feature of the model. In fact, I'd say it's such a characteristic feature of the type that it's almost an essential purchase.

I spent a lot of time on the interior, and now I wonder why, because I didn't appreciate how little is visible once you close it up. No SE5a-style 'skylight' to lighten it up. Probably my most futile act was to carefully place the murky instrument decals Roden provide, which end up far away in the interior, and as it transpires, were mostly absent from the original machine anyway.

One of the nice things of building these kits, for me, is that they almost always increase my appreciation of the original machines and the men who flew them.
Like I said, a handsome plane.

Excellent Nieuport Mark.  :)

I like your colours, and very well laid on too!

You might not think you are an accomplished figure painter, but they sure look very smart to me.

Great work!

 :)

Hello, Mark -

Great model and great display - I really like your figures too!

I also agree that this Roden model is a really good kit and I think this is one of Roden's best model in this scale.

Lovely Nieuport! Indeed it is one of the most elegant Aircraft of the First War, and one of my favorites. Your results are terrific. I like the placement of the figures! The Aviattic figures are extremely well done. I intend to get on mine soon, ( If my Salmson ever arrives,).

Extremely well done - kudos on the build and display! Yes I also wish we would see a figure of Rickenbacker (or Luke, or Campbell) in 1/32.

Thanks gentlemen :)
Have fun with the Salmson, definitely a cool looking machine, with some great schemes
Actually, one of the minor disappointments of the Roden kit is that only 94 sqn markings are provided, but to be fair, those are what most modellers would want. Oh - and no problems with these Roden decals! ;)
Now for the group build...

Lovely Nieuport, Mark!

Your results make a compelling argument for the Roden kit's quality!

Well done,

Chris

What a great looking Nieuport! The camouflage looks good, nice colours. I think you have also done good job with the figures too. Great job!
