Question on early Nieuport XB in French service
« on: March 23, 2015, 05:49:44 AM »
I am interested in finding out if any of the French Escadrilles used the Nieuport XB in action on the Western front.  This was the predecessor of the Nieuport 10, a two seater with a hole in the wing for the observer to poke his head through and fire a machine gun.  I have the Omega resin kit of this plane in 1/48 scale, but the kit comes with Italian markings and looking at Windsock Datafile No. 68 it describes the type used in service by the RNAS but as far as French use, it only mentions that Escadrille N57 was formed on May 11 1915.  It does not mention anything about what N57 did with these or show any photos.  It does show a photo of N.110 without a gun.  So I would like to find out some of the operational history of N57 and see if they used machine guns in combat or not.  and what gun would be correct if they did use them, Hotchkiss or Lewis?
Thanks
Dave

I did find some history on the Escadrille but unfortunately no photos of N.10s or XBs.
